In other news water is wet. These types of institutions where a subset of people are considered to be the be all end all in terms of authority only answerable to a "higher power" it's the perfect place for corruption/abuse to hide in plain sight.
I don't think they are going to be too happy if it turns out there really is a higher power they will meet upon their death.

The problem with complaints of sexual abuse committed by church ministers of individual Southern Baptist churches was the minister accused had no bosses other than the individual church's elders.
Reports of sexual abuse were never raised to the Southern Baptist Conference leaders, the indivudual church elders if they found the abuse allegations true they paid off the accuser or simply buried it. The accused minister may or may not have retained his position at the individual church.

It seems like the abuse was at the highest levels and the coverup started at the top.
I am listening to podcasts about this and they are saying how one girl was abused, got pregnant at 14, was forced to confess about her pregnancy at the church, but was also asked to have an abortion by her abuser. She moved overseas just to escape all of this and eventually had the baby. She has been fighting ever since.
The coverup has been happening at least since 2000.

I'll considering being religious when someone can show me one that doesn't have abuse.

Another great example of the morality of Baptist’s and the Republican Party. Abortion should not be allowed under any circumstances. But wait, this would be embarrassing to o me, so now it is permissible. Use one immoral act to cover up another. And these people call themselves our moral leaders. If conservative Christians cannot understand why we look down on them, here is a perfect example. Live your faith if you want respect

Didn't the boy scouts have a similar problem? I don't think any group where adults have unlimited access to and power over kids (even if temporary) is immune to this. There are good and bad adults in all parts of society. The worst problems come from institutions trying to hide these crimes to maintain their reputation/protect the perpetrators rather than prosecuting these adults.
--- I kept this gender neutral on purpose as this is not a crime perpetrated exclusively by males ---
