Mod E98, Welcome back! Today I planned to play Jabil. ticker JBL. but this week also marks my very first stock purchase 54 years ago. Nisource NI, an Indiana based gas and electric utility. Originally it was Northern Indiana public service company, or called Nipsco. Started with a 100 share lot at about $22.23 and paid something like $74 commision to purchase the 100 shares. At least commisions have come way down! With commisions so high I think everyone bought stock for a longterm play...... I still own this company today, but have sold shares to make a down payment on our first house purchase decades ago as well as some shares to finance a downpayment on the Florida casa......After three years of owning shares of Nipsco I switched from cashing dividends to buying shares in a drip program, and today it is our largest dividend income source in our current portfolio. I actually named myself Value Buy on the old cnbc boards based on boring stock picks like this one that is the cornerstone of the portfolio....  I admit this is not the greatest utility out there and never has been, but at least I knew a lot about the company and liked the idea since I paid them money for gas and electric every month, I might as well let them give me some of my money back. I do not expect to win this week, but I decided just to pick it for sentimental reasons, and if the Fed minutes are released this week with a $.50 rate increase in fed funds chosen, will even come in last this week. For sentimental reasons only, NI, long. |
