My log in is my account number and pin. It's saved so I don't have to actually enter it any more. But if things go wonky I have it written down on a book mark that they gave me a hundred years ago when they issued pin numbers for accessing the Ancestry. Com data from home to do research, sending print jobs to library, dl movies and stuff like that. I know there was a 72 hour period for a while that they didn't show books returned. I kept checking online to see if two books I had put in outside return box had been returned. Finally they showed returned. But from what I can tell now books show returned immediately. I go in to pick up books I put on hold online but when I return them I go to outside drive up box!! I save them, but they get unsaved periodically. Always at the worst time, too. I resemble that statement. Lessons learned the hard way on this end for way to many years!!!

For the last 5 years I only borrow library books online only had to go to library once when my card had to be renewed. Nice to actually go in with all the stacks of books, displays and ‘library ladies’! My mom was a librarian and libraries were always one of my favorite places. My cousin became a librarian at a pharmaceutical company. She combined my career in pharma with my love of libraries! I still think of becoming a librarian. Better paid than what I did, and I love libraries anyway. My mom got her MLS when I was young, not sure exactly when. I did become a latch key kid during one of her master's degrees stints. I think it was the MLS because I remember her homework on creating cards for the card catalog. That's still needed, it's just electronic now and based on whatever library program your library purchases. One of the people I worked a contract with is still working PT at the Princeton library while working a FT job. I am jealous. I love Princeton. The main library is cool, and it's amazing to know they have at least 9 other libraries, one or more warehouses, and the Ivy league library materials transfers that go through regularly. I need to talk to the current library director to get a feel as should I do it and how I would even pay for the degree. There's also a music college who does library science with music. Tried to get a job there back then as I am a musician and read music, so I figured I could do well. Does the pharma librarian mostly file research and patent type applications or is there more to it? As you know, there are all different sizes of pharma companies littered throughout NJ.

Our library system has actually gotten easier on the renewal front. Because of the pandemic and the library being closed for months, the system auto-renewed your items. It still does so, although it will fail if someone else has requested that item or you've hit your limit of 10 renewals. They also went to a no fines system. In practice, its roughly a three-week grace period. After that they assume you lost the item or aren't going to return it, so they send you billing notices. They started that earlier than I as a frequent patron knew. I had one item I returned late, which the system marked as missing even though it was sitting in one of their bins waiting to age out from Covid exposure. I held onto that notice for too long, even though I could see the system acknowledged the return. I am a frequent user of my home library but infrequent user of others. The ones in my county that are part of a municipal complex confuse me. My homes were in a more established county, so there isn't property available generally to build a whole new complex and toss the library in along with town offices, etc. Interesting to learn policies from other library systems - thanks. Our default limit is 2 renewals max, unless a certain library has made items zero renewal. We can override it, but we've had our hands slapped by Central for doing it, so we try not to. Ten would be outrageous! That could be 33 weeks for certain libraries/items/users. Our overdue notice system has 3 notices, first late notice, second late notice, assumed lost notice. It's more than 6 weeks to get to assumed lost. If you return the item after that point, the fines revert back to overdue fines only, not pay to replace the item, and overdues max at $5/item. We waived all overdue fines during shutdown, and continued for about another year. We were quarantining items 72 hours before checking everything in fine free. So items did remain on your account in quarantine. We did it that way so items didn't appear to be available for checkout while in quarantine. My library has been gradually making more items fine free over time. First all children's books, next YA. We reduced DVD fines. We would love to eliminate fines altogether, but unfortunately we need some way to encourage people to return stuff. If there's no fine, eh, there's no rush to get it back, right?

That seems to be the way of computer upgrades or your OS deciding it has to do whatever now. Right now. And I have noticed sometimes autofill's just don't. The library network goes down or is turned off because of some plumbing issue, the A/C stopped working etc.

I think DVDs and games are the hardest to get back. During the winter I try not to hang onto DVDs I want to watch again, if I know there is a list. Too many possible weather issues, and I know how I hate waiting for my holds to eventually percolate up and get filled. The DVD fines were $1 day. The cost of say a Yellowstone season 1 DVD set is pretty hefty. Even music CDs not cheap.

Nice to actually go in with all the stacks of books, displays and ‘library ladies’! I still go there to use the printer for big jobs (I have a cheapie B&W at home). I also go there to pick up Kid books when I'll be with my grandchildren. They have their favorites but I always enjoy finding new ones. We LOVE Mo Willems! Last time I looked for a "reference" section I had a surprise- it's virtually nonexistent. No encyclopedias. It's all on-line. To be fair, I did find some great stuff when doing research for a paper I was writing, including a gem of a book on the history of hymns published in London in 1890. (How often do you read that someone's "versification is slovenly"?) It's very unlikely I would have found that in a bricks-and-mortar library.

And no benefits. I see library positions posted in our email system, and I always scope them out for details. The majority are 19.5 hours, evenings and weekends required. So you can't even cobble a FT equivalent together by taking 2 PT positions at different libraries, because they want the same times. Those with a new MLIS take the position, hoping someone in a librarian position will retire (or die, as the saying goes) so they are in line to move up. Of course, that's only in the larger libraries, that have more than one librarian (the director). I have literally only increased my hours a bit at a time over the years when: director #1 retired, director #2 died, other PT staff left (one's DH retired and they moved out of state, one married and followed DH to another city, one retired after a tree fell on her house). My pay went from min wage as a sub to 150% min wage when I was Youth Services. It hasn't kept up, though, as state min wage has risen. The other clerk has gotten raises the last 3 years from min wage increases, but mine was stagnant. I think the director's salary was stagnant, too. The Board just voted for $1/HR raise for everyone this year, in 2 parts: $.70 now, $.30 in the new fiscal year in July.

I took insurance card to be laminated at library last week. This is done in research/computer section of library on second floor. I wandered around while waiting for my lamination to be done. I went way in the back (huge room) and spied an really old set of Britannica encyclopedia on the shelf! I asked lady about them. She smiled and said when they have school children come on class trips they show them how it was done in “olden” days. She said they were surprised how many kids sat down and actually took time to look at them!

Without a degree in library science think any job would be shelving, check out etc - high school kids fill a lot of these There are levels in the library hierarchy. I've worked at two different ones. What you are describing would be called a library page at the first local library I worked at. Yes, PT and could be staffed by HS kids. The front desk at my current library, does far more than that. Interlibrary loans, new materials requests, and I've had them suggest things to read like graphic novels or what not. One guy has worked there more than two decades without an MLS. I haven't seen anyone younger than college age there (at the main circulation desk).

We had an off brand of encyclopedia. I don't remember what the exact name was any more, but they were handy to have, and there's something to be said for flipping through something like that randomly. Search engines are anything but random for subject, with their business model. However, the quality of results is totally random! 🤣

When I was done with homework, I would pull out a volume and read. Yes, that was my idea of fun. I also used to read phone books in hotel rooms when I should have been sleeping on our family vacations.

Not sure what Princeton pays, probably less as they have a huge pool of students to pick from. In 2020, when the state budget was cratering from Covid expenses, the governor cut state library funding, which kneecapped our system headquarters (unlike my library, Central is almost entirely dependent on state $$). They had to cut 4 FT employees. Then immediately posted to hire 3 PT: $17.17/hr, 19.5 hrs. I was miffed: more than my hourly wage ( I deserve a raise) but fewer hours so gross pay still less than mine. I still won't make $17/hr after our second bump goes into effect. DS5 makes $17/hr, but works 50 hrs/wk, so OT pushes his gross more than double mine, and more than my director's salary. Manual labor.

No way, there possibly is a "mute" button?!? NoNamePerson , you just made my day! I need to fill up in the next few days so I will look. Is it on the screen or somewhere on the side? The screen still makes me go through some chit chat (do you want a car wash, are you using a credit card, click here and here and here) that I almost wish there was an actual person there instead of the screen so I could just cut through all of that and say to fill up such and such gas, and that's that. On the pumps there are a row of “square buttons” on either side of the talking screen! This sticker was on a button on right side. Don’t remember for sure but maybe two down. I just know the yelling screen was quite! I plan to test this out next time I get gas! So if anyone reading this gives it a try and it works report back. Please It will be a month before I add my next $20.00 then again I just may go pump $5.oo just to satisfy my own curiosity! Ok, now you've got me curious: just how much does a gallon of gas cost in your neck of the woods? I just got gas (10 gallon, last fill-up was sometime around TG) and that cost me $45!

We had a set of supermarket encyclopedias the encyclopedia Brittanica was expensive Amazing what the smart phones have replaced! I had an off brand that my grandmother got suckered into signing up for by one of those fly by night sales people. The set was never complete because she canceled the subscription. I think I had A through a random selection of "I words" or something odd like that. Gwen found a few of them downstairs in the basement. She asked DH and I what they were. We told her those were the equivalent of the internet back in our day. She said it must have taken all day to research something. Yep and if you didn't have the right volume you were SOL. I really made her brain explode trying to tell her about card catalogs. I miss card catalogs. My dream would be purchasing one and making my own personal Dewey decimal system for my book case. DH says I missed my calling.

I paid $3.21 a gallon. But I don’t do a lot of driving since retired. Also get 30+mpg in town. I drive a gas sipping Hyundai. I just put 20 a month regardless of how low. I don’t ever get real close to 1/4 tank though. Ran out of gas way back and it taught me a valuable lesson. Should add I get 5% rebate off that price if I put on CC. I did see gas when out today at $3.34 so it’s climbing. I feel for those running to work every day and hauling kids here and there. It’s got to hurt. ETA. Is TG thanksgiving? You drive less than me

$3.49 here just a little while ago picking up my kid. I haven't been in the office for 3-4 weeks, but I'm gonna have to go at least once a week here coming up.

I had an off brand that my grandmother got suckered into signing up for by one of those fly by night sales people. My parents (maybe the same age as your grandmother) got a "free" Collier's Encyclopedia set when we were little, in exchange for their showing them to their friends. The agreement was that they had to buy a "Yearbook" update for the next 10 years. Collier's used to be a magazine- I never saw an issue- I just checked and it ceased publication when I was 4, in 1957. I'm sure they lost a ton on people who stopped buying the updates but, good honest people that they were, Mom and Dad bought all 10. Mom said later she regretted getting them when we were so young- Collier's was more like Encyclopedia Britannica than, say, World Book, so it was pretty advanced reading. By the time we were up to that reading level we NEEDED the updates on many topics!

That really cuts down on driving especially if you don't drive a lot to begin with

My sister and I wanted our own library seals. I'm trimming my books down, but I would love to have a home big enough to have one of those old-fashioned libraries with walls of books and comfy chairs.

I was only at 1/2 tank but I filled up anyway because gasoline is only going higher for a bit. Regular was $3.19 here-premium was $3.99 I get about 17 mpg and don't drive much at all so it's okay for me.

There was also the Great Book series. Very expensive but friends bought a set think they came monthly? Fiends wife once said when they met with a financial advisor , she’d be fine when the big spender was gone ! He bought a new computer every year, had all the ‘special’ cable channels , online gourmet treats , new BMWs etc
She’s fine but downgraded to small condo that still has a pretty big mortgage and has kept same computer. Their kids all had big student loans cause he thought debt was fine

I had a delightful time at Albertsons. I had to download the store app in order to get 97 cent bagels. The clerk stocking walked me through the download and how to get the digital coupon. Then to top it off, she showed me how to check it on "my list" on the app or no reduced cost.
I ended up back with the same clerk to walk me through it again.
At check out I didn't know how to do the digital coupons. The clerk scanned every item and did the coupons stuck on the meat products. I thought the coupon would be figured in the cost. I appreciated the help.
I'll need to learn how to do the digital coupons at check out again at that store.

Digital coupons wouldn't load online for me for my usual grocery store. Luckily what I was really worried about getting was in stock. So, I bought 3 boxes of veggies patties for $1 each. Thankfully not a digital coupon. I have one that expires tomorrow which I may or may not use. Do not know if it's still "clipped".
The joys of technology glitches.
