All the talk about delays in refunds didn't happen. I filled out the forms with OLT Saturday when I got my 1099 (I'm retired), it got filed on Monday when the IRS 1st accepted returns & my refund was in my account this morning.
I used to take my money up front when I was working but I found that when I retired, I preferred a refund, so I have more taken out now & get back a few thousand & don't blow it all during the year. I get a big check in January or February. I was hoping to go to the Super Bowl, but my team (Bills) lost last week. That's one of the reasons I prefer a big refund, I won't save myself but if my team gets in, I can use the extra money to help me go to the big game. I'm pretty much an expert on planning Super Bowl trips, I've been to 6 of them including 4 straight in the 1990s, so it wasn't some pipe dream. I had it all planned out and with my refund I would have brought it in under this month's total cash flow with the refund included.

I'm thinking your track record isn't so good with the Bills and their success rate in the Super Bowl. Maybe spend that refund on something different...

My $100 refund arrived today. I don't know how it will be spent.
I try to come within $100 either way on both the federal and state returns. I owe the state $12, so will mail that in April.
All I have is pension and social security income plus interest. I can't itemize so it's a very simple tax return. Turbo Tax accepted it a week before the filing season was supposed to open and the IRS accepted it on Wednesday before filing season opened.

This reminded me to print my W2. We have so much stuff that trickles in late that we do not usually file before April.

There’s always next year. Enjoy the money on second best thing. I’ve only made it to one Super Bowl. Had no interest in either team just wanted to go to Super Bowl.

I have everything I need, but I have to do mine and my kid's concurrently and I don't have all their stuff. The IRS doesn't process any returns with EIC until mid-February anyhow, so no rush.

I have a pile of papers on the credenza ...I'll likely do the majority of the work the week of April 15. I like to put it off as long as possible. No refund coming here, so no rush.

Still waiting for several documents. Last few years it seems the end of February we were contacting a few businesses for the papers. Did the government stop insisting on a January 31st report date?

Even the govt is running slow this year - I just got an email that IRS finally mailed the first batch of tax forms out on Friday. Remember when the IRS mailed tax forms out to every taxpayer before January 1st? Now we might get 25 copies for 10k residents...or 5 from the state.

I’m envious! I can’t even file until March 10th because one of the IRS forms I need won’t be available until then.

No. No one wants to do that.

Received my 1099 form Thursday, February 3rd. Filed the same day. Having electronic deposit, my refund hit my bank account Thursday, February 9th.
Fast.

I sent mine a couple weeks ago, heard back last night that it was complete. I owe the state $112, Fed owes me $400. that works.
I need to log in and pay the CPA so they file for me. I also have direct deposit, so the Fed refund will land when it does.

I finally got everything, but the college kid's return is going to be a game of..."let's increase and decrease his taxable to see what it does to my credit and his liability", until I get a balance I'm happy with. Not a straightforward fill it out and be done kind of deal.

We've been advised that Merrill Lynch has received permission from the IRS to delay reporting until March 17 at the earliest. We're probably going to owe $3-$4,000 because DH chooses not to withhold on our RMD's. Oh well, pay 'em now or pay 'em later I guess.

I am fighting with the HR Block tax guy - have to give in and go to a local office, but I cannot drive yet and need to wait until at least 3 weeks. I may also start looking at a local person instead of HR Block starting this year or next depending on what happens. I did not like the assumption that he made saying that I was trying to avoid paying taxes. If only I had the energy to do that, I would have so much more money .

The last remaining brokerage statements were posted today but can't be downloaded yet. Mine are complicated enough that I really want to file with the download so the IRS gets exactly what's been reported to them. The good news: I went back and refined my estimate with the major items on the forms and it looks like I won't need the $2K I have set aside as an estimate of what I owe. Federal and state are a wash- refund from one, owe similar amount on the other. That's good news after my recent airfare-buying spree. And, an update: finally got the upload. I have some "structured notes" that pay a coupon rate but pay no coupon if a selected market index goes below a particular value (usually something crazy like a 25% drop). The coupon rate is good but not only are those payments considered "ordinary income" but the brokerage coded the income as Business Income which would imply I have to pay the SS Self-employment tax on $3,325. This makes no sense and I'll be fixing that. Ick. I will not be buying any of those in the future.
