I made the executive decision this morning that I'm hiring out mowing/trimming the lawn. I've never done it before, and I'm just not interested in figuring it out myself. I saw a post in the town group from a pair of brothers in HS that are starting a small landscape business. 16 and 17yo. the estimate came in at $45, and their first visit will be Monday evening. right now, I asked for 3w intervals (which is what was done last year and it was fine) and we'll go from there. When I owned a SFH, I did the same. It was awful in the spring when the lawn was growing like crazy and it would either be soggy wet from recent rain or the rain would start right around the time I'd be getting off work and I could just never get it done. I also offered on FB some flowering plants I'd dug up and thinned, and when the woman came to pick them up she said it looked like I could use help with my flower gardens as well. I hired her to weed, transplant, and thin my border gardens. Add to that the snow removal service for my driveway, which alleviated a lot of stress when a big snow was expected and I'd have to plan to dig myself out before I could go anywhere. Being on the rotation for regular snow removal was amazing. Worth every penny.

3 weeks between lawn cuttings? Hubby cuts ours twice a week. My dad cut his 3 times a week. Trimmed and did the edging along the sidewalk and driveway. Yes 3 times a week, always in the hottest part of the day. When mom finally convinced him he could no longer do it, he had the people he hired cut it 3 times a week. They told him they normally mowed once a week. He insisted on 3 times a week so that is what they did. Of course, he complained about the bill. I've been lucky in that since I have lived here whoever lived in the other half of my townhouse duplex has agreed to cut my lawn. The first couple put the mowing of my lawn in the contract to sell the house. At this time of year, it is getting cut about every 5 days but it needs it. During dry July and August, it gets cut every 10 days to 2 weeks because we don't water around here. It's much cheaper than an actual company and it looks nice. I do have to hire a service to do my snow. Neighbor came over and said he no longer wanted to do it. That was fine because I would see him out there in his jet ski outfit on his riding snow plow but he did the trimming by shoveling it. I am in no hurry to get out so the company has me last on the list. They do like that. Definitely worth every penny.

ETA: We don't have a lawn, but the 4+ acres of alfalfa is mowed once a summer. Snow is dealt with via shovel, roof rake and an ATV with plow. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Longest short week ever! Started early for the weekend. Last night I emptied then refilled the dishwasher, started it, and handwashed a few more items, emptied the master bath trash can and put an empty water gallon in the bin for today's trash pickup. This morning I filled all of the ice trays, cleared off the main kitchen counter, and on the way to the office returned the recalled peanut butter and one other item to WM. Tonight, I'll do a load of laundry. Have a relaxing weekend, everyone.

My grass grows like crazy in Kansas but maybe it was just slow in California due to the droughts? I could probably done mine weekly but get out there every 2-3 weeks.
Today I got 3 new windows installed! These were ordered in December and the factory was way behind. I ordered 2 more and will probably start putting in an order every month since I expected to order 12 windows this year and have gotten 3.
Now my bedroom is done which means I can keep out the snow and take advantage of the breeze in the summer.
I am slowly working on house and yard projects too, I planted 3 new bushes to replace the dead ones and picked up some soil to fill in around the roots.
I’ve measured out 4’ from my fence in the driveway and I’m adding a border of bricks so I can take out the rocks. I wanted to do it before they were delivered but that was the weekend I couldn’t walk.
Next up is buying some eyehooks so I can put the bed frames I bought on the fence (for a climbing vine - they’re old metal frames) and then installing the solar lights coming next week.

TheOtherMe - I already have 3 wisteria growing up the fence and bought a 4th to fill in a gap! I was thinking of honeysuckle for the other fence project.
My neighbor kindly mowed my front yard and I got about half of the backyard done before it got too hot. Bushes are planted up front and I’ve watered the seeds which are struggling. If they survive I’ll have kale coming up soon!
I’m very glad I have the compost bin assembled because I am throwing stuff in there every few days. I put in some straw to help keep the flies away but I also need to toss in all the weeds I’ve been pulling.

I don't have a fence or I would have climbing vines.
I won't grow them against the house because a house I lived in when I was in grad school had vines that had climbed in to the living room. Tells you the window was not sealed.

My husband has cut our new lawn every week since we took possession of the new house. However, that's because it was overgrown, and he's trying to tame it back into shape. Otherwise, he's at an every other week regimen whether its him doing it or we're paying someone to do it.
I have two college projects two finish up this weekend and rotating those through unpacking boxes at the new house.

Everything is communicated by email and I post him a check when his kids do his books. He leaves the invoice under my door mat 😄 Very old school but I've had him come for 5 years now. So polite, never misses a mow, no drama, and does a fabulous job!

He texts me what day he’s going over to cut the grass and texts me after he’s done. I send him payment through Apple Pay. After I moved, it was difficult to keep paying him cash because I’d moved about 40 minutes away. So he set up Apple Pay so I could pay him through that. I haven’t actually seen him for at least 2 years. But I trust him to do good work without me having to check behind him, and the yard is always neat whenever I go over to the house. It works for me.

My guy tried to use technology and failed so we're back to checks in the mail. His kids monitor his email traffic and respond for him. How do I know? He only understands about 30 words of English and his kids that I've met are super smart and adore him. It's pretty obvious they are sending the messages. Our communication is: 'this year, I'll come mow on one of these two days. Please start to me again this year. Please stop meeting for the year. Thanks!x

I had a solid yard guy, when mooch decided he wasn't doing the yardwork anymore. I actually called on that yard guy when I first moved here, and then he ghosted me when it came time for fall cleanup. thanks, dude. I'm totally onboard with supporting local kids. I'd actually planned to offer to pay the kid across the street to do everything when his mom sent him over to mow last weekend. and then he stopped after the postage stamp out front, so I said thanks and answered the kid on the town group. I'll see how Monday goes, and decide from there.

Lol, the one we had for the last two years would email the invoices but we could only pay by mailing a check. Eventually we'll get one for the new house. However, DH is now responsible for the actual lawn. (For the last two-ish years, the lawn guy did the lawn and the hedge and tree trimming.) DH decided he wanted a zero-turn riding lawnmower. I told him the only way he was justifying getting one of those is if he is the one actually maintaining the lawns. I wasn't paying $4K for a mower and its accessories and paying someone to come in to do the actual work!

I purchased some oragnizers for the kitchen and pantry today. I bought two drawer dividers for kitchen drawers. Those worked well in the two spots I needed help. It came as a two-pack, so I only bought one package. As I finish unpacking, I might buy more, but I'm not sure if I need them yet. I bought a two clear rectangle tubs to house the bags of bulk spices. I probably should have done that years ago, but what I was doing in the last kitchen was at least decently working. I also purchased a 12"- diameter lazy susan/turn table with 5" high sides. That's gone in the pantry to hold bottles of cooking ingredients. My previous kitchen had built in turning shelves. The tri-level shelf I had for canned goods had severely cracked, so I tossed it when I was packing; I bought a new one of those. I might need another as this pantry is a "real" pantry compared to the "pantry cupboards" I had in the last house.

I'll see how Monday goes, and decide from there. I wasted about 4 weeks trying to schedule a major yard clean up. they asked for pictures. then pictures weren't enough to price it, needed to see. Last email I got was seriously at 10:30 p.m. for an appt the next day or two, I just happened to catch it and answered with my availability within 10-15 minutes. Never heard back again and started doing it myself about 3 weeks ago, here and there as I can. Starting to see some progress, but still quite a ways to go. Super salty as 1) now thing have grown chaotic outthere and it would be more difficult for someone to come in and do something without ruinging the hidden treasures underneath. And 2) if I knew I was doing it myself, it wouldn't have gotten so overgrown. Would really appreciate some casual unproffessional type help as I do this, so interested to hear how your thing pans out.

ok - so for today: Clean upstairs bathroom to showcase my new shower hooks*. Make another dent in the yard work...finish area around grill, clear driveway edging, start on beds. clean kitchen, finish dining room and entry wash new sheets and make bed do some vacumming and mopping if time/energy permits *I'm ridiculously excited about them. I've been trying to do a beach toned bathroom. Sand colored rug and bath matt, ocean colored shower curtain, and a mix of sand and coral towels. I've added bamboo shelf inserts and grass woven baskets large and small and bamboo little boxes to organize small stuff on the shelves. Likely sounds nicer than I made it! but the hooks are the last piece of this effort. I just wanted a little bit of corally/orangy color and this was the best I could find: www.target.com/p/lakeside-farm-fresh-flowers-bathroom-shower-curtain-hooks-set-of-12/-/A-82152704#lnk=sametab

Today I am organizing my fabric stash and trying to get it consolidated and sorted by color. I’m toying with the idea of selling my excess fabric squares to other quilters.
I am still working through the fabric and trying to catch up on sleep today, if the rain lets up tomorrow I will be back outside to work on the garden.

And I didn't finish bagging all the stuff I pulled up either. Most of today was spent digging up a bunch of weedy saplings that were 3-7 feet. now sure if seeds or springing up from roots left in when I had a tree removed. tree of heaven, such a misnomer. ugly, stinky, fast growing. I cut the parent down 5-6 times, then it got away from me and then I had to have a tree service do it. Still sprouting up all over the place.... On the plus side, as a short break went on craigslist and found someone selling hostas, and they were nearby, turned out just across the street and half a block down. So I took a cart but bought too many and so he carried a few things over and just casually said - if you need any yard help.......why yes! Yes I do!! He said 20/hour which sounds great. An older fellow, retired I expect, so likely on the slower side but that works for me. I just need some help! Any help! His yard looked nice too, very orderly, maybe too orderly! so I think this can work out. worried the work might be too hard for him...but we'll see.

well, the things you learn!
I wanted to at least get something done in the house so really pushed through to do the bathroom. it was a litle weird as the shower liner wasn't lining up exactly with the shower curtain and at some point I had to skip a liner hole, but no big deal I thought...
Well, there is one spacing, in the middle of the shower curtain, that is way too wide. Have had this shower curtain for at least 5 years, never noticed it with plain silver shower hooks....

Hello my friends,
I have been mia for the last few weeks as I was finishing up some items before my craft retreat. I am still trying to play catch up. Dishwasher needs to be unloaded but that will take less than 5 minutes and I will dogoing a it when I am getting lunch ready once I log off this computer. Laundry is in the dryer and the bath has been cleaned. Still need to clear a few flat surfaces but again that is a minimum time suck.
Temps are in the upper 80's/ low 90's already so I will be doing any errands in the early mornings and work on my various incomplete projects during the heat of the day. I do need to get to the grocery sometime this week to get the perishables as I am either out of them or pretty close to it. I plan to reorganize the freezer part of the fridge to see how much of what I have in the garage freezer can be moved there. I hope to get stuff out of the one in the garage moved asap so that I can unplug it during the rest of hurricane season. This is my usual eat out of the freezer time.
This is a pretty show month appointment wise for me and I am grateful for that. I need the time to concentrate on several things that I want to work on and finish. I have started walking in the park again on those days that I can get there before 7 am. By the time I finish up a little after 8, I am drenched and with the temps as hot as they are I dare not go any later as I think it might do me more harm than not going at all.
Take care all!

We're back from London. It took ages to get back, everything was delayed. We had a wonderful time with the grandkids but we are exhausted lol. We saw all of DH's cousins on Saturday, spent most of Sunday with DS3 + A, and spent a few hours with DS1 + DDIL this morning. I unpacked my bag and started the first of two loads of laundry. I have a busy week ... 3 days at school, and a very early start tomorrow. PS You may remember how our cutlery always goes missing, and I reorder the missing pieces every other year ... we found one of our table knives at DS1's house (and packed it) LOL.

It drives me crazy Rukh O'Rorke ! We have a big family and we NEED the set of 12 that we have when we're all together. I should probably order enough to have a set of 16 at this point. Plus, I purposely keep a bunch of disposable cutlery in the same drawer LOL!

My neighbor the garden helper is a god-send. He did a fantastic job today, always asks about anything he is unsure of (unlike those who when in doubt whack it out). He will come back on Wednesday for some more. Based on today's progress, will take some time. Maybe up to 10 work days for him, and not sure how many days a week he may be available, we'll see. Thank goodness for the RI check! may need to invest more into the yard vs the stock market from what I was thinking, well worth it. It's been a source of stress. Not just a huge job getting huger by the day/rainstorm, but worried neighbors opinoins... Just walked 5 miles to buy some old cement urn planters off someone for the yard project. My knees are complaining. Used to do 5 miles frequently but not much for about 2 months, plus I was weighted down, maybe about 80 pounds in the shopping cart. Unfortunately now kind of too tired for the house work, just wanna finish the work day and take a nap, lol! but with the yard off my list, want to make sure I continue with the house. It was looking really great for a couple weeks after I got it in order last month, but has almost returned to previous state as I tried to make yard progress. For kitchen, did a load of dishes, scrubbed sink, and wiped down the breakfast bar yesterday, to finish off - Put away dishes, put the few dirty into dishwasher for next load.
- clear counters and wipe down
- take out trash/recycling, vacuum/mop, may wash ruggable.
Washed new sheets yesterday, for today - dry new sheets and make bed
Dining Room - Clear work stuff from table
- Polish furniture
- Vacuum/Mop
Front Room/study - Polish furniture
- Vacuum/Mop
Entryway and stairs
Targeting all this by tomorrow afternoon/evening, it seems like a lot, I am working, lol! I spent the whole weekend concentrating on the yard work, but don't want this all to slide to next weekend. Also expecting another RI project, so want to get everything back in shape before pulled away into that stuff again. Because next weekend i may have to work! Trying to have meaningful 10-15 minute work breaks doing housework, and then will get after the housework from 5pm-8pm tonight. Hopefully my knees feel better. I have found myself getting too interested in doing the housework stuff at 10pm, and then I don't get to bed till 1/2 and then I'm not doing so great with sleeping ane bleeds into next days' productivity, so trying to limit to 8pm cut off.

Rukh O'Rorke did the cleaner not work out? Could you try again? Could you ask your new gardener friend if he knows anyone? I truly get neglecting the garden, because I absolutely loathe gardening. (I love planting and sitting in the garden, but I LOATHE weeding.) It really seems that you need a reliable and affordable cleaner. If the last one didn't work out, I'd try again. stillmovingforward did your new cleaner work out? I hope so! Sorry I can't remember if I've mentioned this ... I SWORE that I would no longer go into school 4 days/week going forward. Our kids decided they wanted us to rent a place together for 5 days in late August, so I won't be back in time to do the late August remedial class I usually do. To make up those hours, I agreed to replace a colleague who will be on maternity leave from Oct through Jan, one Thursday/month. So I'll be going in 4 days one week in October and November (and maybe September). I told my boss that if K doesn't come back in February as planned, she'll need to replace me, because I won't do it past January.

Would really appreciate some casual unproffessional type help as I do this, so interested to hear how your thing pans out. the guys just left. it took two of them about 45min to go through my backyard with mowers, trimmers and a huge gas-powered blower. I need to go back through the "garden beds" area more with my blower after I pull up a bunch of stuff, but I've been waiting on getting everything mowed before I really got into it. guess I have no excuse now, eh? they had quoted me $45 for front and back. I didn't need front this time, but back was way overgrown. I never got change for a $20 today, so I ended up asking for a $10 bill back and overpaid/tipped a little. that's fine, that's on me and they did a great job. and again, like paying the painter - I could, but I don't wanna. I'll take it out of the 2.6% raise I was informed of this morning.

I told my boss that if K doesn't come back in February as planned, she'll need to replace me, because I won't do it past January. I am continuing the search for a new cleaner. The last one was just ok clean-wise, not really detailed oriented, some spot just forgot about. I mention when making appt I was very sensitive to scents/chemicals, prefer natural products which I could supply and the cleaning person walked in reeking of cigarette smoke under a bath of perfume to mask. And needed a smoke break half way through. Cigarete smoke and perfume both give me headaches. I have contacted several cleaning places and have not gotten an answer back. The last one was just yesterday so can give them some more time. I research very carefully - read all the yelp and google reviews, check out their services and prices, and then call/text/email...one time, two times, three times, no answer. But! Your question spurred me to call the second to last one one.more.time before writing them off, and they actually answered the phone! The two places i've been trying for the last 2 weeks no one answered phone and robovoice said mailbox full. Looks like I can get a date with the the week of the 20th. If the one I called yesterday gets back and can do a date this week will take them and compare. Otherwise, I need to one more time to clean house good, and then just try to maintain until the appt in 2 weeks. hopefully, I find a keeper soon. Sorry about the 4 days a week - but hope the vacay is well worth it! Every week takes you closer to retirement, and then so much vacay! Hold on, you will make it! And I think I'll have to come visit you at some point after that and we can have a glass of wine to celebrate

All this garden talk inspired me to go out and start weeding the south flower beds today! I am dumping all the standing water after another 3” of rain last night and trying to get weeds out while the ground is soft.
Short term goal this week: add weed blocker and bricks in front of garage door to replace old brick patio.
I also need to call and pay for the windows that got installed Friday. Ever time I remember to do so they are closed.
