I'm watching this TV realizing how old the movie is and how far back the story line goes. I guessed the 1920s. I was close. This movie was made the year both Trump and Hillary Clinton were born. It was actually released in 1947. What film would you make if it took place from 2019 to 2045? www.imdb.com/title/tt0038650/trivia/?ref_=tt_trv_trvPharmacist Gower's son's death at college is attributed to "Influenza" in the telegram that Young George reads, dated May 3, 1919. 1919 was the second year of the 1918 "Spanish Flu Pandemic," which was widely spread on the filthy battlefields of the First World War, claiming millions of lives around the world, including 675,000 lives in the United States between 1918 and 1919..
The film takes place from 1919 to December 24, 1945.

I am also wondering how POC feel about the movie. I really noticed Annie the black servant, and just now a black man working at the railroad in a white uniform.
Lot of class stuff, and the woman are all properly happy with their lot in life too.

Also noticing how Donna Reed playing Mary is doing her best to Lasso George, as played by Jimmy Stewart. Lots to unpack in this scene too.

I found it depressing when I viewed it as a young white male. Haven't seen it since.

Never liked it, toooo sappy and cringeworthy The original writers agree with you. I like it, but I would prefer to remake it to be more realistic, or do a different version based on the original Christmas card that inspired it.

Considering that the overall theme of "You Matter in this World" kept me from suicide, it holds a special place in my life. Yes, there are many cringe moments but it's nearly a century old so I let them go. It would be different if it were an actual person but it's not. It is a time capsule of its time.
Same with Miracle on 34th Street.
However, I think it would be fascinating to see remakes of both, minus the cringe, but still done in black and white. I think the colorized remakes that currently exist took something away from the stories.
