So, so, so glad to see this outcome. No way was it anything else. They thought they'd get away with it & they would have if it hadn't come to nation wide attention. This is just one little corner of a backward state that is still stuck in the past, back when blacks were still slaves and many are still treated that way in that area much of the time.

I was able to watch some of the prosecution’s closing arguments. The lawyer did an excellent job explaining how this could not be considered a citizen’s arrest - you can only do a citizen’s arrest in Georgia if you have your eyes on the subject when they commit the felony. None of the three witnessed Aubrey doing anything other than running down the road - they just ‘assumed’ he had done something. They did not have the legal right to stop or question him.
In rural Georgia, I think talking about how Aubrey’s rights were infringed on by the three men trying to stop him and trying to force him to talk to them hit a raw nerve. The MAGA heads are always spouting about their rights.
I was assuming the guys would get off. Glad to see for once my cynicism was unwarranted.

One thing that pisses me off is that some white people think that a black person has to answer a random white person’s questions and do what they tell them to do. I’m a grown ass woman, I don’t have to explain anything to a random person. I don’t have to explain or justify why I’m where I am, as long as I’m not committing a crime. And I sure as hell don’t have to do what some random person tells me to do. So unless I have an equalizer on me, I don’t see that kind of confrontation going well for me, because….. Get the fuck out of my face. And bam! I’m dead.
I am SO glad that the jurors on this case had the courage to do what was right, despite what some people in their community would likely have preferred they do.
I hope Mr. Arbery’s mother gets at least a little comfort knowing that her son’s killers are being held responsible for what they did to him. I hope she has felt at least a little comfort from knowing that so many people stood with her in wanting justice for what was done to her child. None of it means she’ll be able to hug her child again and tell him how much she loves him, but hopefully knowing that so many people believe that his life, that ended too soon and so horrifically, matters, and that HE matters, means something to her.
The shame is that it took the whole nation learning what happened before the wheels of justice started turning. If not for social media and all the attention, those animals would have gotten away with hunting Mr. Arbery down and killing him.
It is my hope and my prayer that now more people have been made aware that these things do happen. We haven’t just been making this shit up for decades. There are so many more Mr. Arbery’s for whom justice has been denied. The details may not be the same, but the nature of the crimes committed against them are. I hope and pray that more people see and understand now, that without pressure on the people sworn to uphold the laws, they often willingly and knowingly sweep these things under the rug. And I hope and pray that with that new awareness and understanding, more people will refuse to turn a blind eye to it and try to do something about it.
What happened to Mr. Arbery is one of my biggest fears for my children and grandchildren. I have an adult son and a young grandson, but I also worry about my daughter and granddaughters. I can’t even imagine the pain his mother has experienced.

I worry about my nephew with things like this too. He's a large brown boy. He is a gentle giant but someone like these guys wouldn't see him that way. They would say he is intimidating. They feared for their life. It's scary.

If 3 dudes in 2 pickup trucks are trunk to stop me, I’m going to run away too.

They feared for their life. It's scary. Yes, it’s very scary. I told the story somewhere around here, how my son left my house one evening earlier this year, traveling back to where he lives after visiting “home”. He prefers driving at night. He called me around 2am, because he’d gotten pulled over for speeding in the middle of nowhere in Texas. The middle of nowhere, like his little dog was whimpering because even I could hear coyotes in the background. I got out of bed to stay on the phone with him while the police officer searched his car. He shares his location with me on our IPhones, so I screenshot his location and put him on speaker and recorded the call on my IPad, just in case. I was so afraid for him, so very afraid. After about an hour, the officer finally let him go with a ticket. I still stayed on the phone with him until after he was back on the road. I thank God that the police officer wasn’t a horrible human being and all that happened to my son was he got a ticket. In a better world, I would’ve just been fussing at him for speeding, instead of being so afraid that something really bad might happen to him because he got pulled over for speeding in the wee hours of the morning, in the middle of nowhere in Texas. In a better world, my son, who doesn’t scare easily, wouldn’t have been nervous enough to call me….. knowing I was probably sleep and had to be at work in a few hours…… just because he got pulled over for speeding in the middle of nowhere in Texas. But I’m glad he did, and I want him to call me EVERY time. But that’s our world, and I hate it. I hate it for us that worry about our black and brown children and loved ones and I hate it for them that they can’t just move through life freely, without all the bullshit that comes with the color of their skin being what it is. I hate all of it.

Always look for the date. The link that you have posted is from September. This article is from today. I thought all this happened several months back. Ex-prosecutor charged in Ahmaud Arbery case booked at jailSAVANNAH, Ga. (AP) — The former prosecutor charged with misconduct for her handling of the Ahmaud Arbery case was booked at a Georgia jail on Wednesday and released. Former Brunswick Judicial Circuit District Attorney Jackie Johnson turned herself in Wednesday morning at the Glynn County jail, county Undersheriff Ron Corbett said. Jail records show she was released on her own recognizance, meaning she did not have to pay a cash bond. A grand jury indicted Johnson, 49, last week on a felony charge of violating her oath of office and a misdemeanor count of obstructing police. Johnson was the area’s top prosecutor when three white men chased and fatally shot Arbery last year. The indictment alleges she used her position to discourage police from making arrests in the 25-year-old Black man’s killing. Johnson did not immediately return a phone message Wednesday. Officials at the jail and the Glynn County Superior Court clerk’s office said their records did not list an attorney for her. Article here: Ex-prosecutor charged in Ahmaud Arbery case booked at jail

It might be dated today, but if you read the body of the article, it makes a reference to the upcoming trial of the three guys that were convicted yesterday.
I don't know whether this gal's arrest and release is old news or new news. It might be mis-dated or it might be a poorly-done cut-and-paste job.

Having the article mention she was arranged 'Wednesday', as in yesterday(?), threw me off.

I don't think that you were the only one thrown off. Some holiday fill-in seems to have made the same mistake.
The article dated today appears to be a word-for-word copy of the earlier AP story.

Ahmaud Arbery killers convicted on federal hate crime charges
The three white men convicted of killing Ahmaud Arbery, a 25-year-old Black man who was jogging in a Georgia neighborhood in February 2020, were convicted of federal hate crime charges on Tuesday by a predominantly white jury. Travis McMichael; his father, Gregory McMichael; and their neighbor, William "Roddie" Bryan, had been convicted of killing Arbery in late November, and a judge sentenced all of them last month to life in prison. Travis and Gregory McMichael were sentenced to life without parole. "As we understand it, [Arbery] left his home apparently to go for a run, and he ended up running for his life," Judge Timothy Walmsley said of the fatal shooting during their first sentencing in January. My understanding is the three will now be imprisoned in a federal prison where they will be better protected from other inmates as opposed to a state prison where they might have been less protected from the other inmates.

Good. This crap has to stop. While I don't think this single case will do it, maybe it's the beginning of something. If we keep making examples out of people involved in racist acts, maybe we can get somewhere. It's going to take a long time, but I have hope.
