A local, well known rapper was killed today. At a cookie shop. As if crime in the area wasn’t already bad enough, people are saying that his murder has started a war.
Since the news broke of his murder a few hours ago, there are reports that another rapper that he had “beef” with, his restaurant was shot up. And another rapper’s grandmother’s house was shot up.
So I guess it really is war?
That means that whenever and wherever the enemies see each other, they’re going to try to kill each other. It doesn’t matter if innocent bystanders get caught in the cross fire. It’s “on sight”, which means when I see you, Imma get you, regardless of where, and who else is around. I’ve been “on sight” about someone before, but that was to kick their ass, not to try to kill them.
I hate living in a world where people kill each other like it’s no big deal, and I hate living in an area where it happens regularly.
Mister and I moved to the suburbs, trying to escape some of the problems in the city, but I know from my younger days that the bad people move to the suburbs too, because they don’t want to shit where they sleep and they feel safer moving out of the city.
I don’t even know what my point is with this thread. I’m just exhausted by all the horrible things going on in this nation lately. If people are getting shot and killed at places like cookie shops, in broad daylight in the early afternoon, is anywhere “safe”? And the retaliation started soon after, shooting up restaurants and little old ladies’ homes…… WTF?!
Once again, I’m saying what I’ve said so many times over the past 4 or 5 years….. how is this even real?
I’m tempted to believe that small town America might be better, but then I think I’d probably have to deal with backwards ass people that have a problem with me living among them. Is anywhere safe for someone like me anymore?
Do you feel safe where you live? I can’t imagine what it would feel like to live somewhere where you didn’t worry about what might happen if you got caught slipping. There have been times in my life where I felt safe-er than other times, but I’ve never felt like I could totally relax and let my guards down and just be. Not when I’m out and about, not even in my own homes.
That makes me sad, because I’m pretty sure life isn’t supposed to be like that.

Hang low if you can. Homicides here are so out of control.

There's been a marked uptick in gun violence where I live. 25 years ago, if there were two murders a year it was shocking. I don't know what we are up to now. As of September it was 9. I know there has been more. We've heard gun shots twice-once this summer and once this fall. The fall one was like two blocks from our house. There's also an uptick in stolen vehicles as well. I still feel safe. But, I'm also doing things to promote my safety: locking doors/the garage at night, not walking around at 2 am, associating with criminals.

I feel safe-ish. I avoid trouble spots, but it seems the world is mad right now. Some guy driving through NYC somewhere got asked "where are you from?" and was shot and killed b4 he even had time to answer. During the day. Trying to go to a shop or restaurant with his family. I am exhausted about the horrible things too. One of the articles today was about two women in LA who got dumped off at two different hospitals after partying late into the morning. Both are young and dead. As a woman I'm always aware of time and place. That's why I don't think I'd demonstrate anywhere especially after the police declare curfew. www.msn.com/en-us/tv/celebrity/l-a-model-dead-designer-friend-in-critical-condition-after-allegedly-being-dumped-at-separate-hospitals/ar-AAQOK6d?ocid=undefinedI hope when the danger of Covid eases considerably, that people will be less on edge and less violent.

I’m still seeing FB posts saying there is going to be some smoke in the city and cautioning people to try to be safe.
Lawd ha’mercy.

There's a lot of violence my city, some random like a huge amount of road rage shootings. A lot of armed robberies and murders just to get a few dollars. I see many reports of violence that's bad blood stuff, gangs and old family feuds. Innocent folks often get wiped out in the crossfire, laying in their beds or just driving down the road. Yes, I'm scared to leave our house for the first time in 30 years.

It sounds a lot like Baltimore. My neighbor is a 30 year veteran of the police department. He goes after the worst of the worst. They do not care, they place no value on human life. It doesn't matter who else they might kill in the process. A couple months ago, kids got grazed by bullets as they got out of the bathtub in their house. It's ridiculous.
Baltimore is closer but I went to DC to pick up my new ID badge. It just gets me all on edge especially when I have to park and walk a distance to get to where I need to go.

For a while, several years ago, it seemed like home invasions were the thing. Of course I don’t want anyone breaking into my home while I’m away and stealing from me, but one of my biggest fears is looking up or waking up and some stranger is in my house. So the home invasion stuff really freaked me out and I guess I’m not over it, because I still have the same fears. The safest I ever felt in my own home, was when I had 2 big dogs living in my house, and an alarm. Because of my dogs, one of which was a 55lb standard poodle with a bad attitude, and another 100+ lb Bullmastiff to back the Poodle up, I almost felt like I could leave my doors unlocked lol. But I never did. My Poodle was so serious about protecting me, my children, and my home, that I believed if someone broke in my house, it would be a lot of commotion and noise first, and they’d probably have to kill both my dogs to get past them. I thank God nothing ever happened to prove it.

Baltimore is closer but I went to DC to pick up my new ID badge. It just gets me all on edge especially when I have to park and walk a distance to get to where I need to go. Nurses at the Children’s hospital here have made it known that they are beyond upset about how many children have been coming in the ER with gunshot wounds. Then, there are a lot of juveniles committing horrible crimes. A couple weeks ago, Mister was talking about how one of his classmates’ son had been killed and the Mom was saying her son was a good kid, and not involved in anything crazy. His social media told a different story. Pictures with guns and gang members. No ma’am Mom, your son was not a “good” kid. I’ve raised children myself, and I insisted on knowing who their friends were. My son use to get so upset with me, because I did not like ANY of his friends. Now he understands. When my kids left the house, they had to tell me where they were going and who they were going with. Of course they could’ve lied, but if they did and I found out, they were gonna be stuck in the house with my ugly ass for a good while. My children couldn’t come home with stuff me or our family members didn’t buy. They couldn’t even tell me they “found” it, I already knew that trick. Everything we “find”, we’re going to get back to its rightful owner. If we can’t find the rightful owner ourselves, we’re going to give it to someone in charge where it was “found” or the police. I was like that because I have some street sense myself, and I knew kids can get into stuff you don’t approve of. I knew that some parents turn a blind eye even when they see signs. I refused to be that parent. Other parents actually encourage their children to be in the streets because they benefit from it. I have a coworker whose Dad told him after he came home from the military, that Dad’s brother’s son was doing some street shit and had bought Dad’s brother a new car, and Dad told his son he should consider doing what brother’s son was doing. What kind of SHIT is that for a parent to tell their child?! If Dad wanted a fancy new car, or whatever, Dad should’ve figured it out for himself, without trying to get his child to get caught up in a dangerous and illegal lifestyle, hoping to benefit from it. There is not 1 material thing in this universe that I want so much that I’m ok with my child risking their wellbeing, freedom and life for. My son’s first year running track, I had to leave work for a coach’s meeting with parents at the beginning of the season. After the meeting, one lady asked when training started. Training had started several weeks prior and her son had been attending. I was disgusted with her because her son had been staying a few hours after school everyday for over a month, and she had no idea what he’d been doing during that time. He could have just as easily been out doing shit he had no business doing. Most of the crimes committed in this area are by young people. I keep wondering where these folks’ parents are. I love my kids to life, but if they were wilding out in the streets, and I knew about it, they’d have to deal with ME getting in their ass before we even got to the street bullshit or the legal system. If they were just that kind of person, me getting in their ass probably wouldn’t stop them, but at least we’d be clear that I’m not with that shit. I don’t know what the answers are, but I do believe that parents and the other adults in young people’s lives can make a difference. I also know that some young people just feel hopeless. The streets are all they know and they don’t value life, even their own lives, because they don’t know how to do better. When DD was in middle school, she had a classmate that didn’t care too much about school, because she didn’t believe she would live to be an adult anyway because of things that had happened with her family. To me, that is one of the saddest things ever, for a child with no physical life threatening medical issues, to believe they will be killed before they get the chance to live life as an adult. I’m done rambling now.

I feel very safe. Don't really worry about crime at all despite the fact that I watch shows like Dateline and Forensic Files all the time.
I worry more about my kid in Minneapolis but he seems to have acquired more street smarts than his mom after living there a year.

@pink, the difference is you care. It's obvious by your post. So many parents don't care, don't choose to be involved with their kids because they have their own problems to worry about. If more people cared about their kids as much as you do, the world would be a much better place.

I live in a very safe town. There has been one murder in the last 20 years and that was a domestic dispute (still sad but not something that puts the rest of us at risk).

Man shot outside Young Dolph memorial; three people detained
One man was shot Thursday afternoon as mourners gathered to remember rapper Young Dolph outside Makeda’s Cookie shop. Three people have been detained. People had been gathering at the store in the 2300 block of Airways Blvd all day to remember the hip-hop star, who was shot and killed at the store Wednesday. Our video showed the crowd dispersed from the memorial after the shot. We saw one man was loaded into a silver Nissan SUV after the shot was fired. Police said the man who was shot was taken to the hospital in non-critical condition. Investigators said two people were detained immediately after the shooting, and a third was caught at Kerr and Mississippi after a short chase. The shot was fired moments after Memphis Police released pictures of the suspects in Wednesday's shooting. Man shot outside Young Dolph memorial; three people detained

Recently a guy driving a pick up got out and went back to the driver behind him. That driver shot him dead. Of course witnesses had varying stories. The shooter said he feared for his life.
People just can't let some things go.

I try to avoid the news as much as I can. I did hear about the verdicts. Someone was playing a clip on their phone while we were in line at Walmart today. I haven't heard of problems anywhere around here.
