I thought of this thread when I was shopping this afternoon. On a whim, I stopped at the local very expensive jewelry store. Lots of diamonds and gems. Out of curiosity, I asked what a pair of emerald stud earrings would cost. $12,000. My goodness! And yes, I could afford them. But I just can't fathom spending that kind of money on earrings when I can spend less than $500 for ones I would like just as well. Who the hell spends $12,000 on a pair of emerald stud earrings
I wonder the same thing about watches. I realize I am not a watch person but why the heck anyone would spend over $10K on a watch is beyond me, but there are several of my board members that do. I know they make lots of money but seems like there would be better uses for it. It's all relative, I guess. I don't really fault them since they have the money to do it, but if I'm going to spend $10K it's going to be on a nice trip of some sort. To each their own. I have a friend who is extremely wealthy. If she can't feel/touch and physically see what she spends her money on she keeps it in her account. I am one who would rather have experiences than stuff. She has tons of stuff but has only been on one out of town trip in all the years I have known her and that was when her brother and wife invited her to go somewhere with them for the weekend. She rolls her eyes when I announce I am going here or there and has actually asked "why" Me: because I've never been there before!! She will kick the bucket with a ton of money to leave to nieces and nephews who will probably blow thru it in a years time. But that's her choice. No kids, never married so that's who inherits. That old saying that's why they make chocolate and vanilla comes into play!!

At least with watches you can easily see if a watch is a Rolex or a Timex. With pretty green stud earrings, a $12,000 pair of natural emerald studs look the same to me a pair of $500 man-made emerald studs. And none of my heirs would expect me to have spent $12,000 on a pair of earrings! My husband LOVED nice watches, but I doubt he paid more than $350 for one of his Citizen eco-drive watches. But, when he died, he owned 8 of them. I don't know what to do with them because my male relatives mostly wear watches like the Apple watch. Any suggestions?

I’m always amazed at how insecure/competitive many wealthy people are. Luxury brands, whether they are really quality merchandise or not, are the badges of their success. It’s the mine is bigger than yours syndrome. Bigger yachts, bigger houses, more houses, fancier airplanes, etc., that is.

The conversation revolved around their cars, watches and other "toys." I have never been one to "keep up with the Jones" and I am baffled that this was actually stimulating conversation for them.

I see it with a few of my friends who are always upgrading their boats and trucks and seat location of their season tickets and the hotels they’re staying in when they go on group trips. They haven’t went too extravagant on homes and vacation homes yet but that will be the next logical step. They are always trying to out do the group and I think it gives them a rush.. It’s like they’re chasing the high.

But, I guess it falls in the jewelry category which I also don't get.

I’m in the rotation for the sporting events if there’s an extra ticket. NFL, NHL, NCAABB, NCAAFB.

Nice enough for me and not over the top expensive. I'm the same way. Though now that I'm home, I do not wear jewelry all that often. But when I did, I would buy costume jewelry. My engagement ring/wedding band and a pair of diamond earrings my husband bought me long before we were married are the only real pieces of jewelry I own. Well, I still have my engagement ring from my first marriage but that was only half a carat and its tucked away until I figure out what to do with it!lol

I retired January of 2014 but it took until now to get to 2million. Mostly because I have been giving away money. I have given about 650K away over the last few years but inherited some too so not a straight doubling. As soon as I sell the other house I will gift 100K to great nephew for his house down payment.
