certificates from second city. Also a minor in history.
What would that get you in an entry level corporate gig?

Apparently, its 70k.
50k base, 20k annually for monthly perfomance bonus, plus unlimited additional bonus for bringing in new clients. Expected to exceed 6 figures in a year or two.
Generous benefits, swanky business travel with unlimited alcohol and optional nightclubbing expenses all paid. Expensive Swag Bags for onboarding. Finge benefits all over the place. The works.
Go DD!

I thought your daughter was a PA?
Shit, I have a masters and only make $74k, no bonus in my corporate gig after 14 years.
Of course, I live in the boonies. 😄

not quite, but kind of close I think? Just iding potential clients, checking interest, and tracking them to the sales people. It's B2B focusing on companies with 100 million or more in sales.

Some went so far as to call it "irresponsible parenting" and that I should insist she study "something useful" yada yada yada...... DD will be out earning my stemmy phd with her BA in about 10 years (she writes up email sequences to engage potential clients) - if she doesn't hit the jackpot first with her creative endeavors. She is in an improv troupe and has a pod cast that has listeners from like 40 countries. They recently had their instagram for the podcast get a lot of attention.

I really thought your daughter did physical therapy or was a physicians assistant or something! Who am I thinking of?!
Good for your DD! I do a lot of writing in my marketing comms position - could have used a gig like that when I was starting off!

Marketing takes certain skills that I don't have but if you can bring in clients in any business, you're golden. I worked for a commercial insurance brokerage where the "producers" were the rock stars. Some made over $1 million/year. My only ride in a private jet was with a producer and others on the account- he chartered one for a meeting in Des Moines, a 3-hour drive from us. Very stressful, though- one admitted to being afraid to go on vacation because they needed to be there for their clients or someone else would poach them. The actuaries I knew who had the math smarts but also the people skills ended up as partners in consulting firms.
I have to admit I would have GREATLY discouraged a kid from majoring in creative writing but she sounds like a dynamo. Please keep up updated!

She's done some contract work with her writing skills over the past few years, and was interviewing just to do some contract writing for other people's email content. They liked her so much, they offered her to start with their next entry cohort. And she is the star of her cohort! She is writing and engaging with clients with highly customized outreaches and has already brough several clients to the sales team. No one else in her cohort is doing original work, they are using existing pieces. Some of the higher levels in her group (2-3 years experience) are actually taking her work as a model rather than using their own because it is getting results so quickly. She has only been there a month. She has all my gifts, but was raised to be confident and not a doormat to everyone else's needs and feelings. I'm so excited to see how far she will go! And to take her off my insurance!

Yes, this is wonderful to hear that is worked for her. My DD2 was a talented, artsy creative type and it worried us when she went to a 4 year art school. Her niche became commercial interior design and she has worked for a very good well-known employer for now 10 years. Not everything must be STEM.

People generally need some level of talent and inclincation to do well professionally. I really don't know why everyone is so hung up on "stem degrees for everyone!" My only idea is people who miserably followed stem because the "had to" or felt they "should" and want everyone to be miserably with them.

I’m not someone that thinks someone needs a stem degree. I am someone that thinks you need a plan for a degree before you drop $50k to $75k on it. I personally know many people who are saddled with significant student loan debt, who have no marketable skills or degree.

I have a STEM degree, but don’t agree with the push for STEM degrees for everyone. To be successful, it is about finding something you are good at, working hard, making connections and working toward a goal.

I personally know many people who are saddled with significant student loan debt, who have no marketable skills or degree. there was no plan, to my mind a bachelors is just a necessary part of pure education. A chance to learn and explore. Sure - if anyone wanted to do engineering or computer science, have at it, but I didn't concern myself with the utility of the degree - just that it was a good degree from a decent school, not a for-profit enterprise or that kind of thing. I guess we collectively dropped about 100k on this degree, including the semester abroad. there was 20k in the 529, DD has 30k of loans, and I have about 50k in loans for her. Weirdly - DD absolutely loves this job. She is going above and beyond almost daily, working long hours she doesn't have to as there is an opening for a promotion right now and she thinks she can get despite only being there 2 month. I cautioned her a bit but didn't dwell as she worked til 9 last night, I'll talk to her again today because I don't want her going down that rod too far if the rewards don't present themselves, and the danger of increasing expectation for the current role without clear markers of when it would be rewarded. I walked that path too many times myself. But she is much more outspoken than I am, thank goodness, and I am going to coach her to bring this up to her boss, what she wants and how she has been working twoards that, rather than working hard and expecting people to notice/reward with saying anything.

Less than a year in, DD is getting a promotion!
Raise too, but I'm short on the details as yet.
