We signed the offer today. We might be disputing whether or not they get our microwave. DH handles this portion of our lives, so I'm not totally sure. We have to be out by March 31.
debthaven - update. Congratulations!

Everything is signed. We still have to be out by March 31st. DH has scheduled movers for the weekend of March 11th for the big stuff. We will stay with our bed and kitchen for the remainder of the month.

debthaven - update. Microwaves are cheap. Don’t let the deal go south over a microwave that might be worth $100. If you need a microwave, this would be opportunity to upgrade, or an opportunity to delay repairs such as replacement of burned out light bulbs.

Um…is it normal for buyers to ask to buy your furniture?

Oh absolutely, DH said that immediately to the agent that this was mot a deal breaker. It is a$350 microwave though. There’s not much to upgrade.

Um…is it normal for buyers to ask to buy your furniture? I think it's a common ask. My aunt bought the patio/pool furniture at her current house from the prior owners. They offered though. They knew where they were moving to and that it didn't fit. Unless you are super attached to it, I would consider it. The less stuff you have to move the better.

I think it's not unusual to ask to buy the furniture. It makes sense, given that the furniture was selected to work well in the house.

I did have one of the couches specially made to fit in its spot.
Apparently they also want my curtains. I’m baffled but also taking this as a compliment. I’m curious to see the entire list they ask for.

I’m curious to see the entire list they ask for. I think it is a compliment. As long as it’s stuff I don’t care that much about, especially if I bought it because it specifically suited that house, I’d just leave it and give it to them if the offer for the house was good enough. Imo, leaving things the buyer wants, that I don’t really care about taking with me, gives me more options to do what might suit my new home better, vs trying to make whatever I already have work. But that’s just me.

I could see asking for furniture. It seems more common for vacation homes which often include the furnishings. Most people just don't want to deal with it, especially if it's an estate. When my mother in Florida passes away, we'll offer her place for $100k, or $90k if you take all he furniture. 😊
I sure as hell don't want to move it. Anyway, I see it as a chance to get a new start, you can have my old junk.

Yeah, we're at minimum talking about a $5,500 custom sectional couch that's only three years old; I'm not just giving that to random people. I'll give it to one of my children first if I don't want it. (And actually have given my children couches I was done with --LOL! )
They're giving us a list of what they want out of our house and offering to pay beyond the sale price of the house.

Curtains are very standard to stay with the house and are considered attached from the lenders side.

The rule around here is if it’s screwed into the wall it stays. So the curtain rod or blinds would stay but not the actual cloth curtains.

So, in my bedroom, the Roman shades must stay, the curtain rods for the sheers would also stay, and the hooks holding back the sheers would stay. However, I would take the sheers with me.

We left all the window treatments with our last house. The panels in the living room had cost a fortune because we had to have them all shortened. Of course, I had picked something that was lined. But they looked awesome, so it was worth it. We couldn't have used them in this house anyway, so leaving them was no big deal.

Off topic, but we haven't had any window treatments for 30 years. I guess I'm just a savage 😊 it also helps that we don't have any neighbors, so we only have to worry about the deer & turkeys looking in.

In every house I've bought or sold, window coverings stayed unless the buyer wrote them out of the contract.
I did find out when I sold a house in Boulder that the washer and dryer stay and in Fort Collins, the washer and dryer go with the seller. That left me needing to buy a washer and dryer.
I have no idea if that is still true in Fort Collins.
My parents had an old freezer and an older washer and dryer in the basement of the house sold. None of us wanted to haul those out of the basement, so they were in the listing to stay.

Out in the country and most living areas are up a level.

DS lived in Germany for a while. There when moving it’s common to take the entire kitchen - stove, cabinets etc

It's also common in Italy to take kitchens when you move.
It doesn't make sense to me. How do you know the cabinets will fit into the new kitchen, or that your old cabinets are discontinued and your new kitchen is bigger and needs more cabinets?

When I sold my house at the end of last year I was told if I wanted to take any of my curtains/drapes I needed to state that in listing and to make sure it was included in the signed offer that those would be going with me. I live in the same state as Knee Deep in Water Chloe, so maybe it is more of a regional thing.

Spelling things out in the contract eliminates the assumptions that buyers might make about what is included in a sale. It avoids having an unhappy buyer when the drapes or free standing shelves in the garage disappear as the seller moves out. It also prevents the real estate agents from having to use part of their commissions to mollify an unhappy buyer who assumed that the $10K in custom window treatments were included in the home purchase.

I can understand leaving curtains and other window treatments- there are so many window sizes and styles that I can't imagine them fitting into a new place. I think that's been the case with every house I've bought/sold. Good to have it all in writing, though. The house the Ex and I bought was supposed to include the fireplace set. We noticed on the walk-through that they took it. We pointed out at the closing that the contract specified it would stay. They had to bring it back.

The people who sold us this house had our agent ask if we’d like for them to leave the tv in one of the bedrooms. It was mounted on the wall and it works. Sure.
When we moved in, we saw they also left the basketball goal and fireplace set. We already had a fireplace set, but ok. Then we discovered they left lawn equipment, including a self propelled mower. That would’ve been nice, except we already had lawn equipment, including a mower, although theirs was a more expensive one. I like to think they were just being nice, since they moved into an apartment and couldn’t use the stuff anyway, but it was just more stuff for us to have to deal with.
That is how we ended up with even more duplicates than just those that came from Mister and I combining households.
All of our windows have blinds. 4 windows had curtains. They left 2 pair and took 2 pair, including the ones covering the sliding doors, leaving them bare.
