Wowser! Which way is up? Where do we go from here? The stock price fluctuations in some pretty big companies is crazy, let alone what it is doing to the smaller companies. I know they told us September is usally a down month but this action is impossible to figure out.......

We are in week one of November and setting new records in major indexes. Now some of the smaller indexes are following through. Big funds are starting to align their yearend holdings to show their customers they are b=in the winning stocks at the end of the year.
And some of the largest equity fund management companies are trailing the stock market index performance numbers.

December has been a mixed bag so far. Last week bad, this week, so far good.
Covid decimated it last week. Covid not important this week.

play the volatility, and wait for a long term trend to set in.
my index is the Russell 2000. my portfolio tracks it reasonably well.
RUT has MAJOR support at 2100. if it falls below that, I am going short. but so far, since March of this year, it has tested that level FIVE TIMES and bounced back every time. including a run to 2450.

Well, today is interesting . Markets opened positive, then the Nazdaq slipped. Then slipped some more. Then fell. Now taking the rest of the market down with it. Lots of selling of the hot internet darlings. If this continues tomorrow, we just might see a large amount of capital come back into the stock market next week.

Our long term individual stock holdings are all up today, but our mutual funds will get hit hard today.

I'm OK with my mutual funds going down a bit. I keep looking at where we were eight years ago when we stopped working and where we are today. Huge difference!

Pfizer is +50% in the last two months, and looks like it has a lot of upside, still. it did very well getting the Covid pill out.
edit: I am puzzled about why the Covid pill is not seen as a gamechanger, because I think it is. it seems to be every bit as effective as vaccination.

It won't be a game changer until there is adequate testing available, results best within early days of infection.

Still waiting on adequate testing........then again when everyone in America wants tested at the same time, either you wait two weeks for results or there are no test kitss to get tested.......... Since the CDC and Health and human services have always advocated massive testing, I cannot fathom why there are no tests to be had......

Okay this is brutal today. Just sold almost $60,000 in stocks today. DOW DOWN ABOUT 1,000 points right now and S&P500 and Nasdaq decline is by percentage points, worse off than the DOW. European markets are not any better. Looks like we might see some margin calls being placed to some investers (not me, but the big funds and the individual exchanges) today and it can compound the sell off...... Decided we would pull money out to cover living expenses rest of the year, and leave us about maybe $13,000 to reinvest later this week. None of this is from retirement accounts as we pulled $20,000 out of them by January 10th to cover us a few months. Did not want to pull from retirement accounts any more than RMD'S because it is possible year ending values might be way down from January 1st this year and wil deplete the accounts at a faster pace than I feel comfortable with.
Not sure what the investment number will be at the end of today, but I am anticipating all investments will be down about $180,000 from the first of the year, not accounting for the selling we did. It was a great run the last few years, and I imagine we will recover from this sell off, but just do not know how long it will take. Based on where we wind up this week, I may also drop all DRIP programs we have in place and just take the dividends. To be determined.......
Probably over reacting, but as we age, we cannot take the chances we did previously. Less time to recover, etc.

Today I have seller's remorse.........obviously over reacted. I was worried the IRA accounts would collapse and would still have to pull the remainder of our RMD'S at low share prices depleting the accounts faster than I want. They are all trending down as it is........just not collapsing But, this morning if I excluded my withdrawls and sales we are down $221,000 in our entire portfolio, which is scary imo. When I lookm at the portfolio gain for last year, the hit was much more palatable, although still down .

We've taken no action. At the worst, we will not take a withdrawal this year. I don't think we'll be at that level, though. We may take it later in the year as we usually withdraw after March distributions hit. Last year we waited until June distributions.
We've got enough of our portfolio in bonds and cash that we sleep well at night. I'm willing to withdraw from the bonds if necessary. I do my rebalancing by withdrawing, so it's pretty easy to decide where to take the money from.

Our portfolio is down $270,000 this month. We have to take out $135,000 RMD this year. Will wait out the hopefully short dip.

Crazy market. Now I'm up $70k, but due to one stock we own too much of. I know it's against financial wisdom, but it's sentimental because my wife retired from them and they always pay a dividend.

Our mutual funds seem to be leaking money every day. Not big amounts, dribs and drabs..... NiSource the utility I sold a third of our holdings of, 1,000 out of about three thousand shares, just increased the dividend by a cent and a half, so another mistake by me.... Chevron announced a big dividend hike for March of eight cents a share, so I guess I will be holding this one after all. Thought I would sell partial stake as I do not see oil stocks to hold onto their gains later in the year, but now, I am not so sure. Based on two holdings increasing the dividend maybe a couple of other holdings will too

The last 90 minutes or so was so unpredictable, imo, but made everyone fairly happy unless you were shorting everything. Of coursr the mutual funds never go back up as fast as they fall........
