Hello all! I took a trip to the grocery store today to pick up a few items, and I noticed something that I thought was worth a chuckle - My toilet paper was subject to regular sales tax, yet my croutons for my Caesar salad were tax exempt! Seems as though my province's govt believes croutons are more of a necessity than toilet paper is! I mean, sure, we gotta eat to live...But I think having a clean tooshie is more important - and more worthy of a tax-exemption - than a salad topping. What say you?

No grocery items are taxed. Paper products are. It isn't a luxury tax. The worst TP in the world is still taxed, but your caviar, steak and lobster isn't.

LOL... maybe they thought you could use tree leaves instead of TP but there is no substitute for croutons?

Perhaps where you live no grocery/food items are taxed. Where I live, grocery items that are not considered essentials (like pop & chips, for example) DO have sales tax on them because they are considered as luxury items. Essentially, this means my province's govt has decided that TP is a luxury, but croutons are not.

They probably have a distinction between "groceries" and "junk food". Taxing your TP has nothing to do with considering it a luxury.

Hmmm...Well now that just takes ALL the fun and funny out of the situation. I had a good giggle thinking croutons were a bigger "necessity" than TP.

Hoops has got it.
They also tax you on the chicken that is roasted at the deli, but not for the sliced turkey that is cooked and in the lunch meat section. So, yes, their definitions are weird.

WA state doesn't tax "non prepared food" but it tried to start taxing pop and candy bars. They really screwed up trying to define candy but leave bake goods alone, the result wait... Snickers are taxed but nestle crunch wasn't!! Want to know why...nestle crunch has rice in it and anything containing a grain based product was designated baked good, didn't matter how much!! But voters overturned the whole thing and we are back to taxing TP but not "groceries" (I was going to say food but prepared food is actually taxed higher then everything else in certain areas)
