Will be happy when the two little ones,7,5, can get vaccine Oh, I agree! DS’ in-laws have been great about including them in safe family vacations- a rented condo in Breckenridge, camping- but the little ones are 7, 5 and 3. And the latest from the KC Ballet is that they won’t allow under-12s to performances and I was hoping to take them all to The Nutcracker this Christmas. I can see why rented houses/condos are so popular now. I’m currently planning to attend an event at the Kauffman next month and I’m really impressed by their COVID policy that all in-person attendees have to provide proof of full COVID-19 vaccination.

I agree. Unfortunate for the kids- and for the Ballet, too, since the Nutcracker is the big moneymaker for every ballet company and it attracts so many families with young children- but it's the safe thing to do right now. Yeah DH's family is a fan of the Outer Banks and it is not cheap. If you want oceanfront it's even more money. I'm looking at an agency they use and a 5 bedroom oceanfront the last week of September is $7,000. No pool. It looks like rates are not really dropping until October this year. Wow. My parents would not have gone for the 1970s-adjusted equivalent of $7,000! Our vacations were pretty frugal because they wanted to save to put all of us through college, which they eventually did. I wonder how much of it is pent-up demand from people who didn't travel last year and the desirability of houses instead of hotels and restaurants. For us, a family of 7, it was far cheaper to have a house with a full kitchen and only a few restaurant meals. Now, of course, it's the safer option, too. When the Ex and I went in 1984, DS was only 8 months old and we brought the babysitter's teenage daughter with us to look after him. For some reason Ex and I decided we liked one of the other bedrooms and gave her the master BR with the balcony facing the ocean. She was in heaven!

I'm wondering if there is a cost we need to add to Mich's vacation as we live vicariously through her?

We traveled a decent amount of this past year, mostly making up for some lost trips from the prior year.
-Trip to FL for a week during Spring Break. This was a family trip with my family, so we only paid for flights and rental car. Probably $3K total. The flights during that time of year are just crazy, but I don't think I could drive. Well, I could drive but I don't think the rest of my family could.
-Trip to Disney World in April. Total trip was probably $7K or so for 5 nights.
-Trip to North Carolina. Trip was for my wife and I, probably $3K in total.
-We went to my parents lake house in Michigan a few times, all driving. The cost was probably comparable to had we stayed at home.

I got a 6 bedroom oceanfront house with pool for early October in Myrtle Beach for $3,000. We rented a house on the NC coast (not outer banks) last year when things were just opening up. We were beachfront and the cost was $6500 for the week. The house was amazing and had a pool. We looked for the same week this year and it was over $10K. OUCH!

We spent a week in St Martin in May. It was 5 of us - me & the sweetie, our two boys (22 &19) and one of their girlfriends.
I used miles for the flights, so it was around $450 in taxes for the 5 of us, great deal. We got a 3 bedroom condo right where we wanted to be for around $2000, also a great deal. Rental car for the week was cheap - maybe $300? We had another $500 in government required Covid insurance and the testing to come home.
Food & Beverage was EEKS!! More than the combined total above I believe. I've tried to block it out, LOL. Take a couple of 19 year olds someplace they can legally drink expensive cocktails and they will! When you're sitting at the bar with your 22 year old and hear him ask the bartender "what is your best rum" you know it's going to be an expensive night.
It was super worth it. There were no cruise ships coming to the island and it was uncrowded and fantastic.

He had beer every night at dinner and would grin from ear to ear when they brought it. One night after DH and I had settled in for the night he went down to the bar and had another! (We knew because he'd charged it to the room.) I guess we got off cheap. Good to create memories at that age before they fly out of the nest.

We got back from Aruba last night (one week - Saturday to Saturday). I arrived a 39-year-old woman and left a 40-year-old hag. 😝 We were supposed to go in May 2020, but that obviously didn't happen. I got a full airfare and hotel refund that April, so I rebooked airfare and hotel last November/December at a cheaper rate than I had originally booked in 2019.
Airfare x2 (with main cabin extra upgrade) - $1184 Hotel (one-bedroom oceanfront suite) - $1192.44; thank you Black Friday pricing! Testing to get approval for travel to Aruba - free PCR at CVS Required Aruba Covid health insurance - $30 for the two of us Cash spent - ~$1000 (tips, excursions with cash discounts, random small things, etc.) Credit Card charges - ~$2000 Antigen tests to return home -$35
So we're hovering somewhere around $5,500 for that trip, booked when I felt optimism about summer 2021. I felt pretty damn safe in Aruba. Definitely much safer than the embarrassment the US has been. I'm just so glad we finally returned to Aruba!

Required Aruba Covid health insurance - $30 for the two of us Just curious- what does that cover? I read somewhere about a country (UK?) requiring a $500 "quarantine package", which I assume would cover the cost of quarantine if it were required for some reason. Did yours cover only any treatment costs if you got sick there? Given the way most travel policies are VERY carefully excluding anything pandemic-related, I wouldn't mind paying for separate coverage if the price were reasonable.

Aruba's mandatory Covid insurance covers hospitalization, treatment, and quarantine if you test positive on the island, up to $75,000. It's required to purchase from the Aruban government before your arrival. www.visitaruba.com/traveling-to-aruba/entry-requirements-and-visas/aruba-visitors-insurance-covid-19-travel-insurance/

I wish more countries would offer that. I'd certainly take them up on it.

Not summer vacation but going to France in October. So far $855 round trip ticket. It WAS a great flight. Non stop both ways. Unfortunately it’s not coming back. But it’s still France.

6 days in Minnesota and Wisconsin - around $800, including renting a pontoon for a day. We camped and then stayed with hubby's aunt.
4 days camping locally with my parents- Like $150. $45 for the campsite the rest for worms, food, and booze. (We spent a lot for worms; we caught about 30 fish between the 4 of us...took us about 6 dozen worms to do it).

I'm guessing $1.700 for 5 days in Boston. Maybe more, idk. When costs are spread out in time, or shared, I tend to lose track. That doesn't sound too bad, I guess, but that's just for me. I'd hate to see the cost for the whole family.

About $3000. The condo was $2250, add in food, gas to get there, kennel costs, and it was worth every penny because my whole family came with us (kids, spouses, and grandbabies).

Our trip to Calgary (which really wasn’t vacation) was less than $1000, mostly gas. The place we stayed had a deal going on, $82/night and the location was perfect for what we needed. We had one huge dinner out where TD picked up dinner tab for dinner for SB and wife, and 2/3 of their kids. Breakfast at the hotel was cheap, about $10 US pp.
The cruise coming up I can’t even tell you the cost as a good chunk of it was moved from 2020 travel plus the 25% premium we received. Same with the flights, as they were paid for, then part was returned to us, a lot was vouchers. Pet care is going to be considerable though…..

I managed to fit in my first road trip with the camper!!!! $750 in gas. And van ran perfectly and the weather was awesome! Tell us more! I remember when you decided to get the camper and I want to know all about your trip. I went from Ontario to NB and back, 1500 km one way. The trees were all showing their best colours and it was gorgeous! On the way there I was alone. The van runs like a dream! 17 l/100 km. Not the greatest gas milage but way better than the bigger RV'S. Quebec has beautiful rest areas on the side of the highway. I camped at one of those for the night totally free. There were a bunch of trucks, cars and RV's that had the same idea so it felt really safe. I was all cosy and comfortable, made stir fry for supper, watched a movie on my phone, breakfast in the morning and I was back on my way. Had a great visit with my parents, first time seeing them in 2 years, and my Mom came back with me. It's better roads at the end of the trip coming back to Ontario so we drove straight through. I see many many road trips in my future. 😁 It was a wonderful

I'm so glad to hear this laterbloomer! I have a little rv and use it regularly. I enjoy finding little out-of-the-way slots where I can stay for little to no money. There are some beautiful rest areas in 'the lower 48'. My mother loves riding with me 😁
