So I'm mostly abandoning my Europe plans this fall. Still might fall into place, but this delta stuff is making me worried.
I just was looking into Hawaii and I'm not sure I want to pull the trigger. 700 something for flights. 1200-1500 for a week's stay. 800 for a week rental which I might have to pay parking for. It's adding up to a fuck ton for a week.
So then I'm debating taking my friend up on his week cruise which gives me one week left. Was thinking of splitting it up into two long weekends instead of trying to figure out where I want to go for a full week.
I started looking up national parks and realized I could go to Acadia in October and see the leaves changing!!!! But I know nothing of the area and it's kinda sparse.
So hoping whoever lives there or if anyone else can chime in.
I'm having to rent a car either way so driving to the park wouldn't be an issue. I'm fine with seeing other places in the area too. But I'm not sure where I should look to stay. I'd prefer some place with nice restaurants or bars to go to at night - but not sure if that's really an option in the area?
Do I need to make sure it's early October? Or is that too early?
Looks like it's not too bad for me to fly into Bangor. Thinking it's not worth flying into Boston but I might be convinced.
Thinking 2 or 3 work days taking off.
Thanks! And sorry for not remembering who it was to send a message.

I know Maine fairly well, although it's just from visiting over the years.
Acadia National Park will be beautiful that time of year. You'll also have the company of other leaf-peepers wanting to see the foliage. It shouldn't be too early for tremendous color.
Flying into Bangor makes the most sense if you're going to Acadia. It is a low-key, quiet very small city. If you want more than that, fly into Portland, and plan on staying there. There is a lot to Portland, restaurants and attractions at the harbor, that make it a great destination.
If it's just for a couple of days I wouldn't venture into Boston, myself. Or I'd stick to Boston for the trip. The distances driving through Maine are long.
Hope that helps.

Hi justme!!! I'm in Maine. A little more down the coast than Bangor but still a Mainer born and still living here. Acadia would be gorgeous at that time, I do think that they are requiring reservations at this time for certain places and days in the park so make sure to call for that. If it was me, I would fly into Bangor which is maybe an hour to an hour and a half from Acadia. If you want a fun little town with shops, restaurants and a little night life, I would stay in Bar Harbor. Its quaint and fun and close to Acadia. They have some neat things like lobster boat cruises and other types of things like that. If you have any other questions let me know. I hope you are able to come and enjoy my little corner of the world.

I know Maine fairly well, although it's just from visiting over the years. likewise, and all the driving through to get to New Brunswick. Portland is a cute little airport, with more going on in the area than Bangor. it sounds like you're looking at 4-5 days if you include a weekend, so I'd probably spend a couple in Portland and a couple in ANP to get the best of both. it's about ~3h up to Bar Harbor, so maybe fly into Portland and out of Bangor or vice versa? another option to think about!

Not 2 minutes ago I saw a headline on CNN that the governor of Hawaii is now asking tourists to stay away because of the COVID surge there. The article also references a shortage of rental cars (though I hear that's an issue absolutely everywhere). So I guess that makes your decision even easier. www.cnn.com/travel/article/hawaii-covid-tourism/index.html

I just tried to book a car rental for Sept 1 locally and got nothing. I suspect smaller cities may be much harder to rent out of than large ones.

So far I've had good luck booking through Costco for a rental car. I got two out of Knoxville this month and it's a small airport.
Costco has availability for the days I was looking at for both Hawaii and Maine.
