My dad is 77. Every idea online does not apply to him. He's a simple man.
Golfs, plays cards, reads.
Yard, grilling, grooming stuff is out. He has it, my mom cooks, and he uses/wears whatever grooming stuff.
I need ideas. I usually buy him books (loved Jim Gray's talking to Goats), some times golf clothing (can't buy him equip- My sister and I bought him a Big Bertha driver years ago NOPE), and I'm stumped.
Any ideas??

Would a Hoyle's Rule of Games interest him? ADDED: I think there is a book about Hoyle (and how the Rule of Games got written) as well. If he plays cards, I assume he plays in real life with other people as they sit around a table (versus online) - maybe get him a card game that requires a "dedicated" or special deck - like Rook or Haggis? Or the old stand by: Uno (sometimes it's nice to have a new deck or two to combine if you play with more a table full of people.) If he is playing with other people in real life - is there some sort of "snack" he might appreciate? My siblings like mixed nuts or some sort of ready made "chex mix". Or something he can take and share with his card playing friends on game day? I know you said no food...

Do you have a good relationship? If you do, how about a nice, heartfelt letter? My inlaws are close in age. We get consumables, if we get anything at all because they are are on a downsizing trend again. Once I'm done with most of my treatment, we'll move to having them come over for meals more often again.

I'm doing a couple pints of ice cream from a local place for my dad this year.
Between grandma, my brother and the restuarant I figure he could use something to emotionally eat.
Any consumables he likes that he doesn't regularly buy himself?

Do you golf? I'd say take him out on the course to either play a round together or just drive the cart for him and visit.

His bucket list! (My mom had just gone to NYC with me for a business trip-her bucket list) My son, his only grandson rode with him for 18 holes. It was incredible!! Us girls watched them come up the 18th hole. We have a great relationship. And NO- I'm not spending that kinda money lol. Cards, they play poker, euchere, black jack and associated games with real cards with their friends during the winter and couples groups.

Golf shirts? If he has a local golf course maybe a gift certificate to their pro shop? He's a good golfer- can shoot his age, so he win's lots of free merch. BTW I hope my previous post didn't sound pretentious (I used to travel a TON for work- I had a shit ton of miles and free hotels). And Pebble Beach is actually a public course, so green fees aren't astronomical.

Personalized golf balls and tees. You'll need to know what height tee he uses. A ball marker unless he has a "lucky" one.
I know time is short for personalized golf balls. Also, find out what ball he plays. There is a gizmo that can mark a straight line all around the ball.
I don't know if he has a Ball-z. It is a plastic covered thing that is wet to wipe the golf ball off. A golf towel from a fancy golf course.
Does he play in the mist/rain? A rain coat for his clubs.
A new golf hat.
Higher end is a small golf gps that talks.
How old are his clubs? Maybe a regriping gift certificate.

That sounds awesome, but I was thinking more of just a day together. Its harder for me to find stuff like that with my dad. With my mom I always did nails or a movie and then lunch or dessert stuff to visit. We did a couple baseball games a few years ago that was great. My dad will take on any crazy project I come up with which is good bonding time, but I try not to ask him to do my yard work for fathers day anymore. Lol. Since covid hit my go to gift are plants.

Are there any car washes in the area that sell gift cards or coupons for a good car wash? That was something my dad liked last year or the year before.

I bought hubby an old fashioned ice cream maker. Not a full on hand crank one, but one that looks like that old style. Also ordered a couple of sports tshirts & coozies.

Father’s Day is for remembering now. This will be my first father's day without my father. My go to gift was gluten free beer. Red Bridge if I could find it as that was his favorite.

Father’s Day is for remembering now. I'm sorry, that's how Mother's Day is for me. That's why I've changed my mind on traveling out of state for his upcoming 90th Bday. Probably will need a PT weekend job to pay for it, but I realized no guaranteeing further birthdays.

I used to get my dad a gift card to play the local golf course. He has gotten every golf accessory already, and would constantly find other people's lost golf balls.

I live out of state so I'm thinking of giving him a 1 yr. subscription to a magazine that highlights the state. Since he's gotten the stent in his one kidney I don't think he likes to travel far. So its one way for him to travel without leaving home and a way to give him talking points for people who don't understand why I did not move back home yet.
He loves visiting Winterthur when out here. I'd like to take him and me to a closer smaller place in NJ. Forget the name of it, but its now a museum and at one time was where Stickley furniture was based. Its smaller and would require less walking.

Is that the place in Denville? (Minado's) Its probably something different. The place I remember is a good sit down Chinese restaurant. My Dad and I love Asian food.

I see they haven't opened the interior yet. A woman gave a talk on a table once, that I attended and she linked that table to the Arts and Craft movement across the US and highlighted similar in I think a few other countries. I love the Arts and Crafts homes in that area, and hope the building will open up soon. One sib would also enjoy it in addition to Dad. Not sure about my other sister, but who knows?

I used to get my dad rhododendron plants every fathers day for a decade or more. When I was about 12 dad got mom one named blue peter but we moved 5 years later so didn't have one. When I was around 30 I found one so took mom to get her one and another color and she got rhody food. She put them in the garage and went to work swing shift. Dad found them and thought mom got them for him so planted them. So every year I got them for them for mothers and fathers day and gave them the same day so he planted them in the back and front yards until they were both full of huge plants and said to stop they were out of space, I switched to fushia baskets named dark eyes, it was his favorite. He expected my SIL to get him smoked salmon every year.

I love them, but I haven't messed with the complex's plants, just gone around them or trimmed a bit. Smoked salmon is good! But so is Salmon in general. My Dad's preferred food gift used to be chocolate covered cherries.
