I wouldn't say a 3 year old car is half the price of a new car. In your link a 2011 Sequoa is $40 - $60, but a 2008 used one is $32 - $40. That means the bottom of the barrel is only $8k cheaper than a brand new one.

I think sedans depreciate much quicker than SUV's and trucks. A 3 year old car might have half the value of a new one, but an SUV hasn't depreciated nearly as much.
When DH traded in his a 2003 Chevy Silverado truck in 2009, they gave him about $12,000 for it, and it was dented and scratched. He paid $18,000 for it in 2004. He bought it with 9,000 miles on it.

...:::"I drive a nice Infiniti G37 with all the bells and whistles. I got a relatively good price IMHO but I was reviewing my expenses that it brought up recently: higher insurance, higher gas (needs premium), and replacing all four tires (the front and back are different and can not be rotated) and I'm not sure if I'd do it all again.":::...
This is an excellent choice. I'm considering a G37 as my next car, and would certainly want the creature comforts that make having such a car worthwhile. Although many people do not consider these things worth the money, others do.
But damn, different tires on the front and back?!?! Its always something finnicky with these fancy cars. I was also considering a 335, but I don't like the way BMW firmware requires that everything else be updated to match it vs. being backwards compatible with whatever else is in the car.

I have a nice SUV. I get to pay $800 every 5 years to replace the tire pressure monitoring system. Four tires cost around 1k. Oil changes are $120 each (synthetic and a ton of it - and no - they've arranged the engine so it's almost impossible to change myself.) And I spent $80 the other day to fill up the tank.

All I can say is that we dumped another $500 into the old car. Not a problem, and hopefully that will make it good to go for another significant time period - but I'm bored of the whole cycle. Break-fix-break-fix. It was fun in our 20's, when getting stranded was a funny story - but I'm over it.

No - I'm super excited. We got the Honda Pilot, with every feature they have. Top of the line. Nice ride, reliable car. And it is shiny!

No Lena - the $61k car was the Toyota. We drove it - it was very comfortable, but I felt like douche driving it, so we opted for the less-douchy Honda.
It was $37k, plus tip, tax and license (or whatever bullshit they put on there.)
They gave us 90% of what we thought we could sell our trade for, private party.
We put down $3k, and financed the rest at 2.9%, so we owe around $33k.
We can now make phone calls through our steering wheel and see the map on our dashboard. We can also back-up without turning our heads, and plug our video games into the built in DVD player. What a bunch of crap that we didn't need! Sheesh. I feel so ugly american!

WWBG, you would love my workplace... we have a row in the parking garage marked "COMPACT CARS ONLY". These spaces are routinely occupied by at least one SUV or full-sized pickup. I even saw an H3 parked there once WT, congrats from one Honda owner to another! How is that new car smell?

The Pilot is fabulous. I bought one in February (doesn't have navigation or rear entertainment though).
As an added bonus, Honda made my first payment for me (up to $500) since I was a current Honda owner when I purchased.

We now own two hondas. I'm pretty sure we have set ourselves up for perpetual key issues.
Any ideas? I'm thinking a blob of nail polish on the back of one?

AWESOME!!! I am so happy for you. We have all the things that you listed in our Subaru and I thought we were all set for the next 10-15 yrs, but now we have to look for something else. ![>:(](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/angry.png) Oh, and btw, I was driving a 15 yr old Nissan with NOTHING in it (even the radio has been broken for years) and you know? It's nice to have those "little" extras Lena

Our Murano has a back-up camera! Who would have thought a back-up camera was a necessity (ok it isn't, but it is pretty darn cool). Congrats Thyme! Enjoy your new vehicle.

I would love to have a Pilot. I don't love that payment though. Maybe if DH wasn't driving a PS BMW. Maybe I can get him to trade it in???

They are pretty cool, aren't they?
I'm at the point where I consider leather seats a "necessity." They clean up so easily that I don't ever want to live without them as long as I have to haul kids around.

I forgot to mention the "heated" part. They have to be heated. I had the unheated ones once and they SUCKED in the winter!

I've been so fat lately that I am constantly hot, so can't stand the heated seats, even during New England winter...

The heated seats don't do much for me, but we have them now. We did test drive a car with the seat coolers. It was nice, but not worth buying the car.
