'Redneck' TikTok User Burns Confederate Flag After Discovering Its HistoryA TikTok user has documented herself burning the Confederate flag after learning about its history and modern-day use. TikTok_hates_me__ shared the clip on June 6, writing "I'm sorry I ever showed I was 'racist' from a flag. We burnt it tonight. I'm sorry our culture taught us this was okay, it's not. I'm white. I'm redneck, but never racist. RIP to this racist flag." The footage shows the TikTok user setting fire to the flag on her porch, before adding it to a bonfire in later videos. What is commonly referred to today as the Confederate flag was actually the Battle Flag of the Army of Northern Virginia. It was first used during the American Civil War, and is now often used as a symbol of southern heritage. However, it has been employed by numerous hate groups, including white supremacists. I can't answer those questions. I'm just glad that there's one less of those hate-banners around. Burning it instead of just taking it down is a pretty dramatic step.

What always amazes me is seeing someone flying one here in the frigid north. Stupidity at its best.

What always amazes me is seeing someone flying one here in the frigid north. Stupidity at its best. Probably someone originally from the South who wants to declare they aren't a damn Yankee. (Or ten million other reasons, most on the asshole side)

It was right in the article, "Southern Heritage". It's a Southern thang, y'all wouldn't understand. We worry and talk about white sups like you continually bring up gangs in the cities. Like next to never. A miniscule % of the population All I could find in the linked article was: " 'well everybody else is doing it so that's something that we should do,' that's really it, " Is that what Southern Heritage is about? You just do stuff because that's what everyone else is doing?

I celebrate my German heritage by eating baked ribs with sauerkraut or German potato salad.
I don't have raised on a flag pole in my front yard or attached to my vehicle a Nazi flag.

I recently put German cookbooks on hold at the library because I am not entirely sure what really is German food from my Mom's side and what is just Midwestern American farm food. I prefer beer on tap in Germany. Other than that I'll have to think about it, although I did make brats in beer last year that was pretty popular with my coworkers.

It is a sign of rebellion cemented to wanting to maintain slavery.

Like next to never. A miniscule % of the population In a very literal sense, I worry about this stuff all the time. I’m a school teacher. My students are being mentally and physically hurt by both gangs and white supremacy.

I live next to what used to be a hotbed of KKK, or so I have been told. So its the simple 'I am pro slavery and treating black people like shit flag', which D23, seems to think is not common. (Its way common in NJ, in fact I would agree most people who do use or fly it are solely flying it for the intimidation factor. Are you in WA, Oregon, or elsewhere?

Not sure what you're trying to say. What type of slavery are they trying to maintain ? They use the old Virginia battle flag for this ? Seems kind of crazy. For our portion of the country, the Confederate flag is not a symbol of Southern heritage as (almost) no one here is from the South. The people who fly it here are have absolutely no clue that it is Lee's flag. They only know it as the Confederate States of America flag. They associate it with defiance of authority--rebellion. They like perceiving themselves as anti-authoritarian. They problem is that sentiment and context are aligned with the southern state's goal of maintaining their lifestyle that was afforded with being slave owners. That context cannot be separated from "just anti-authority/anti-government". It is simply not possible for people of color to feel safe when a colleague, peer, or authority figure is wearing or displaying a confederate flag. In addition, the PNW is quite seriously built on white supremacy. Sun down laws were still in effect through the 1990s in several regions. One of the high schools in the state in which I live has a dragon as the mascot because the KKK had such a large chapter in that area. Another high school has a mascot called "Red Devils" which indicated the connotation regarding the perceptions of Native Americans--not Braves, not Rogues, not Chiefs as what were white people's words of honor. My students of color at minimum bristle when a confederate flag is on a classmate's shirt, hat, sticker, etc. And Native Americans--at least around here--are damned annoyed with Hitler for ruining the swastika. It was a sign of peace for indigenous peoples. None of it is sensical, but it is how our culture works.

I have never spent any time socializing in the pacific northwest, nor New Jersey as mentioned by some one. Explains the vitriol from certain posters about the flag. Down here black people fly/use that flag as decoration, it's like just the opposite. I have lived in the South my entire life and I have never known any Black person that wanted anything to do with that flag, especially not to fly or use it themselves. Wtf? Most Black people that I know do not perceive a person that displays that flag in any way positively and damn sure won’t display it themselves. That’s crazy.
