Anyone here a fan of foreign films? What are your favorites? Or what ones did you think were terrible?
I have a lot that I love, but one of my all time favorites is "Cinema Paradiso."

I am a fan of foreign films. My top films are: 1. Diva 2. Zazie Dans Le Metro 3. Un Chien D'Andalou/L'Age D'Or 4. A Nous La Liberte 5. Celine and Julie Go Boating
These films are anarchic fun and/or have breathtaking cinematography. I watch some Japanese films too, and Italian: the last DVD I watched was "Big Deal on Madonna Street", a film by Mario Monicelli with a snappy soundtrack from Piero Umiliani, based on a short story by Italo Calvino.

Added to say: not sure how many/style you've seen. I've listed what I would consider 'accessible' films below... I would recommend these to my 'mainstream' friends...
I'm not a big fan of 'Happy' movies - but I really enjoyed the following foreign movies. In no particular order: 1.) Amelie 2.) Once 3.) Children of Heaven 4.) Wild Strawberries 5.) Spirited Away
What I really like are soul sucking and/or emotionally exhausting movies in no particular order: 1.) City of God 2.) Breathless 3.) The Virgin Spring 4.) Bicycle Theives 5.) The best years of our lives Not foriegn but this should be required for everyone...
I'm also fond of vampire movies - I really enjoyed Cronos and then Let the Right One In (the original foreign one not the US re-make).
OK, I'm fond of Del Toro movies - Pan's Labriythn and The Devil's Back Bone were both enjoyable Adult Fairy Tales.
And yes, I'm fond of Ingmar Berman movies... oooo you have to see atleast one Felinni movie - nothing beats the magic of a Felinni "parade" and there's been one in every one of the few movies I've seen - I enjoyed La Dolce Vita and 8 1/2.

I'd say "Spirited Away." Granted, it's dubbed in English and it's a cartoon, but it's still awesome.

I have been trying to watch "Let the Right One In" forever. I have it from Netflix, but every time I start it, something happens and I have to turn it off. I forgot about "Cronos." It's been awhile since I saw that one.
Did you see "The Orphanage?" Del Toro produced it, I think. It was really good. DH walked in the room while I was watching "Pan's Labyrinth." I was sobbing. He tried to make me feel better by saying, "Maybe it will have a happy ending." I could only sob out, "No it won't because it's a foreign film and they never have happy endings."
I tried to watch "The Virgin Spring." I got about an hour in and couldn't keep going. I just wasn't in a mood to handle it.

I really enjoyed The Kite Runner (Afghan) and Sophie Scholl: The Final Days (German)...the 2nd is a story I'd never heard about, and it is quite interesting.

I never pay attention to names titles. The asian movie about the laid off orchestra musician who goes to work for the undertaker. beautiful-everything about the death prep/ceremony was music in nature. The south american movie about the divorced older woman downsizing and her relationship with her maid she can't afford to pay. some movie I cant remember revering chocolate. many others. picture grabs me, i read the blurb, then rent the movie. one of the rental places here has a very large foreign section.

I think it was called Departures and is fairly recent.
My favorite movie is Hero or as the title in Chinese it can be read as Hero or Heroes. I loved the imagery and how the story weaved but my favorite part was the obvious life lesson of some mistakes are huge, i.e. Nameless being quilled with arrows. The tough thing is to see past all those things that appear wrong and stay grounded in the bigger picture. I really identified with the character I think called Broken Sword. You see the big picture but you can't convince those around you so they go off to right wrongs and just get themselves killed.

Loved The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo The Girl Who Played With Fire was "so so" The Girl Who Kicked The Hornet's New was good.
Debating on whether or not to see the US version.

I have only seen the US version, and thought it was good. Loved the Characters in it. Would love to see the other 2.
