How are things doing in your area?
Have to get the funds for the stimulus checks somehow. Hurting people really need the money, but nothing is free. Glad we have the disposable funds to pay this but we know some people that this is a real burden.

It's $2.84 here, but got it for $2.75 yesterday in a city a little south of me. They almost always have cheaper prices.
I'm still not driving much, so doesn't matter all that much to me, but nobody likes to pay a lot at the pump. What're you going to do, though? It's always been about supply and demand, and this isn't even close to the most I've paid for a gallon in the past. I don't think companies ever got rid of their "fuel surcharges" from prior spikes, so I guess they can use that to offset their fuel expenses again.

ses I'm confused. Did you mean to imply that higher gas prices are due to higher gas taxes because those taxes are used to pay for the stimulus? Um. No. If that's what you meant, then let's just say that those taxes are higher to pay for trump's massive tax cut for the rich.

The last 2 stimulus checks probably depleted the 'emergency fund' so good politicians have to rebuild that and more to pay for the latest one.

I guess the disaster in Texas has nothing to do with it. Texas supplies much of the refinery production for the nation, and I would suspect that the power issues had an effect on production. I fail to see how any of the spending at the national level affected gas prices

What is this 'emergency fund' you speak of? Is it a euphemism for something? Where and how did you see/hear this termed used (what's the context)? The US hasn't had a balanced budget with a surplus since 2001... The National Debt is at 27 Trillion... About 4 trillion of that is probably due to Covid19. Someone is going to have to pay for the spending over the last year (and actually 4 years - as even less tax revenue was collected due to the tax cuts BEFORE the pandemic). I highly doubt taxes on gas is going to solve the problem. |

Considering gas was upwards of $4/gal back in 2008, I'm not gonna complain about gas that is $2.75 right now.

Gas here is always more than elsewhere. I got gas last week and it was $3.499/gallon. I have no clue what prices have done over the last year as that was my first time filling up in a year.
Taxes make up a big part of the difference between here and other states. We also have a very specific (limited edition LOL) summer blend to reduce air pollution in summer time. Since that is limited to my state only a few refineries produce it - result? We pay a premium for that. However, I don't know if this bend is already at the pumps.
My guess, and it is strictly a guess, is that the recent Big Freeze has more to do with the higher gas prices but who knows. One thing I am certain of is that the relief checks send to people have nothing to do with it.

Also with the pending decrease in fracking, domestic production will be lower, OPEC has stated that they will decrease production as well to drive up prices to make up for lost revenue. Whether we want to admit it or not, global politics play a significant role in the prices we pay for domestic products. |

Some of the price increase is tied to the storms that devastated Texas.
We were warned that in the Gulf States we would see a tremendous increase because production was really off.
I hate it for people with long commutes like my daughter and her husband who each commute an hour or more. However, my daughter at least gets paid for her hour when it isn't her store. She is a pharmacist who is often asked to fill in.

I paid $2.39 last week, up from $2.19 last month. Many Texas refiners and distributors were damaged by the February storm. I don't see a nefarious scheme in this cost increase, or a connection to the stimulus payments some Americans received.

This is a ridiculous theory. Increased gas cost doesn't go to the government as a tax. The cost increase is from the oil prices going up. Station has to pay more, station charges more. We had been under $2 per gallon for quite a while. DH and I never take it for granted, though. Gas was more than $4.50 per gallon in NY when we moved out here. It was almost $2 per gallon less here. |

Each state has a different rate of tax on fuel. Each state uses those taxes collected from gas sales, to maintain roads in the state supposedly. Federal taxes applied to gas/fuel are mostly used to fund the overseeing and regulatory organizations- Ie EPA. |

Wow! I've not seen it under $2/gal since I was a teenager! It was under a dollar a gallon here for a while last summer. I would say that I was jealous if it were not for the fact that I am 100% certain you spend far more on gas then I did last year. I am also reasonably certain that, despite the price difference, even in pre-Covid times you spend more on gas than I do. So I am actually happy that the lower price is charged where it does the most good |

TD said that they try to stagger turn around between refineries so they aren’t all doing it at the same time. |

That explains most of the increase. Then Costco’s earnings release last week cited keeping gas prices down even though oil prices were increasing as a factor in not meeting analyst projections for last quarter. So it looks like Costco was probably taking a smaller than normal profit on gas last January, which resulted in artificially low prices at the pump during your baseline period. Seems to me that Costco was helping folks out as they waited for Congress to act on a third stimulus by holding down gas prices, not screwing them. |

I paid $2.87 gal a few days ago, at Costco. It has been that price for at least a week, at that location.
Because I was driving a rental car, I kept the gas full.
