And the deadly crazies come out. New York Times article. Man Sets Himself on Fire Near Courthouse Where Trump Is on Trial
Onlookers screamed as fire engulfed the man, who had thrown pamphlets in the air before he set himself aflame. A police officer tried to extinguish the flames before the man was taken away in an ambulance. A man set himself on fire on Friday afternoon near the Lower Manhattan courthouse where jurors were being chosen for the criminal trial of former President Donald J. Trump. The man, who had lingered outside the Manhattan Criminal Courthouse earlier this week, doused himself with accelerant at around 1:35 p.m. in Collect Pond Park, across the street from the building. Onlookers screamed and started to run, and soon, bright orange flames engulfed the man. He threw leaflets espousing anti-government conspiracy theories into the air before setting himself on fire. People rushed to extinguish the flames, but the intensity of the heat could be felt several hundred feet away. After a few minutes, dozens of police officers arrived to smother the blaze. The man was loaded into an ambulance and rushed away. The New York Fire Department said he was taken to a hospital in critical condition. A high-ranking Police Department official identified the man as Max Azzarello, 37, of St. Augustine, Fla. The official requested anonymity because the man had not been publicly identified. Mr. Azzarello had appeared outside the courthouse on Thursday with a sign displaying the address of a website where the same pamphlets were uploaded. The top post of the website says, “I have set myself on fire outside the Trump Trial.” At the park on Thursday, Mr. Azzarello had held up various signs and at one point shouted toward a group of reporters gathered there: “Biggest scoop of your life or your money back!” One of his signs claimed that Mr. Trump and President Biden were “about to fascist coup us.” Rest of article here: Man Sets Himself on Fire Near Courthouse Where Trump Is on TrialIt's all for you Damien! Trump. It's all for you! If there is anything that is going to get me to believe in the concept of an anti-Christ it's Trump. I vividly remember that scene from Omen 1.

NYT article. Jurors Begin to Understand the ‘Trump Tower Conspiracy’Donald Trump always wears a red necktie, right? Not anymore. For the last four days in court he’s gone with a blue one. Whether this is a lame bid for the sartorial sentiments of blue-state jurors or just a reflection of his mood, he heard more bad news in court on Monday. We learned that if Trump testifies in his own defense, he will be chewed up on cross-examination. Justice Juan Merchan ruled that Trump can be questioned about lies he told in four of six prior judicial proceedings, including the E. Jean Carroll case and the ruling that the Trump Foundation was a fraud. Only a foolish megalomaniac would take the stand under such circumstances — so perhaps he will. Merchan also made it very clear he doesn’t approve of “jury nullification,” instructing jurors, who seemed very attentive, that they must convict him if they are convinced beyond a reasonable doubt that he is guilty. In the prosecution’s opening statement, Matthew Colangelo outlined what his team calls the August 2015 “Trump Tower conspiracy” hatched by Trump, Michael Cohen and David Pecker, boss of The National Enquirer, who began his testimony later in the day. Colangelo previewed a large amount of evidence that will corroborate Cohen’s testimony about the falsified business records (including handwritten notes) that will most likely be damaging to Trump. The worst day for Trump could come when the prosecution plays a September 2016 taped call in which Trump can be heard asking Cohen, “So what do we have to pay for it? 150?” (Meaning $150,000.) The answer was $10,000 more. Colangelo concluded: “It was election fraud. Pure and simple.” By saying of Trump, “he’s a man, he’s a husband, he’s a father, he’s a person like you and me,” Todd Blanche, Trump’s lead attorney, seemed to be setting up a defense partly based on Trump not wanting the Stormy Daniels story made public in order to protect his family. But Cohen and others are expected to testify that Trump tried to avoid paying the hush money on the theory that it wouldn’t matter if the story came out after the election. So much for shielding Melania. The Trump lawyers are denying everything — the alleged affairs and the cover-up — which is unlikely to be persuasive. But they may have better luck arguing that for all the prosecution’s talk of conspiracy, that wasn’t a count in the indictment. Blanche’s best line was: “Spoiler alert: There’s nothing wrong with trying to influence this election. It’s called democracy.” What the jurors don’t know yet and won’t learn until the judge instructs them just before they deliberate is that there is nothing in New York state law requiring prosecutors to prove that Trump broke tax laws, campaign finance laws or conspiracy laws to win a felony conviction. All they need to do is prove that Trump intended to do wrong in these areas. And by insisting that Trump is completely innocent, his lawyers have made it harder for the jury to convict him of just misdemeanors, not felonies. But it will be a few weeks before the jury understands all of that. Jurors Begin to Understand the ‘Trump Tower Conspiracy’

What Does Your Tie Color Mean?Your tie makes a powerful statement and its important to know what image you are projecting. Red It’s called the power tie for a reason, and by wearing a red tie you are implying that you mean business. Just like Tiger Woods wears a red shirt to convey dominance, the red tie is a reaffirmation of strength, authority and dominance within the professional world. For a less aggressive approach, switch out your vibrant red for a softer shade of burgundy. Blue Conveying trust, stability and confidence a blue tie is perfect for client facing or public speaking. That being said, it’s no coincidence that politicians and salesmen are frequently seen in blue ties. The lighter blue shade is softer and appears more approachable. A darker shade of blue represents seriousness and matter-of-factness.

Trump's humiliation deepens: In court, he can't hide from his tabloid rootsWhile it falls far short of the punishment he deserves, there was no small amount of satisfaction from reports that Donald Trump had to spend much of the first week of his first criminal trial quietly taking it as mean tweets about him were read aloud in court. For hours at a time, potential jurors in his New York "hush-money" trial were interviewed to determine if they could judge Trump with an open mind. In the process, both past social media posts and in-the-moment honest opinions were made public. Trump is such a famous narcissist he literally has a woman who follows him around with a wireless printer to keep him in a steady supply of online praise. Hearing what people outside of the paid shills have to say was, all reports suggest, very upsetting for the former president. He glowered and eventually tried to leave the courtroom so quickly that he had to be told to sit down by the judge. The jury is now impaneled, and no longer will be asked to talk about past social media posts calling Trump "dumb as [expletive]." But, as Monday's trial opening suggested, this trial is set to put Trump's fragile ego through a lengthy battering. It's hard to believe it — considering his ridiculous hair, hideous makeup and comically oversized suits — but by all accounts, Trump seems to actually believe he cuts an impressive figure. He famously spent decades longing to be included in the ranks of Manhattan's social elite, imagining he had a "classiness" they were simply failing to see. As Elizabeth Spiers of the New York Times wrote last week, "The rich and powerful sometimes invited him to their parties, but behind his back they laughed at his coarse methods and his tacky aesthetic." Alas, getting elected president allowed Trump to finally swaddle himself in the pomp that allows him to successfully delude himself into believing he has an air of dignified stature. During his time in the White House, of course, he enjoyed the state dinners and other grand ceremonies meant to imbue the office with solemn authority. Granted, Trump's clownishness just made all of that seem ridiculous to those looking on, but his attempted stern-faced expressions and chin-up pride showed that he really did seem to feel he was finally being taken for the great man he wished himself to be. Rest of article here: Trump's humiliation deepens: In court, he can't hide from his tabloid roots

I long for the days of impartial journalism. The remarks about his appearance were unnecessary. Why, he comments on people's appearance in a derogatory manner all the time. Remember what he said about Mika Brzezinski something about "Bleeding Badly from a facelift"?

The remarks about his appearance were unnecessary. not disagreeing here, but impartial journalism has no impact on Trump or his minions. one could argue that our current situation demands that we make very pointed and candid remarks about the character of the man who is vying to lead us.

shitgibbon is a very clever contraction. Can you elaborate so I don’t spend an hour on google trying to figure this one out? i just think it is a very humorous and unobvious way of engendering an image of the subhuman known as Trump.

“Spoiler alert: There’s nothing wrong with trying to influence this election. It’s called democracy.”
through fraud? um....yeah there is.
edit: i have been thinking about this all afternoon. he basically threw the case away with this comment, imo. he admitted that it was election interference before they even called the first witness.
what he should have said is that there is nothing illegal about trying to hide your indiscretions. but since he has not admitted to indiscretions, he could not do that, either.
i think Trump has backed himself into a corner. if he did nothing wrong, then why hush it? if he did something wrong, but was NOT trying to hide it from the public, why not just admit it and get it out in the open? if he was trying to hide it from his wife, why would he care about the timing of it?
i think he has given the whole game away. and i think that any reasonable jury will think so, as well. this might be over in May.

I long for the days of intelligent opinion pieces free of cheap shots. In this case, the criminal narcissist deserves it. I bet Trump longs for the era when newspapers had a gentleman’s agreement not to report about presidential sex. Like with Kennedy. That got ruined over the pearl clutching about Clinton and the intern. I remember all the GOP condemnations about lurid sex in the Oval Office. Now, of course, the GOP is running a guy convicted of publicly defaming one of his victims and that seems to be fine, so of course Trump would expect everyone to be cool with him paying off sex partners and the burying the proof ‘to not upset Melania.’

By the way, pre-court photos of Trump today are rough. Very drawn face and puffy eyes. 24/7 bottled up rage can’t be good for you.

I long for the days of impartial journalism. The remarks about his appearance were unnecessary. I think that the idea that journalists won't comment on appearance flew out the window when they started snarking about Hillary's pant suits. Let's not forget the hysteria over Obama wearing a tan suit or Michelle daring to wear a sleeveless dress either. Not saying it's okay just that it is nothing new at least in my lifetime.

I thought a Judge's gag order in a case applies to all people involved in the case. Why can Cohen and others make podcasts and disparaging statements and get interviewed by the press and Trump has to keep quite? Just wondering

I doubt a rouge individual would threaten or harm a juror, a member of the court staff or the family of the judge over what Michael Cohen says.
