Here is my grumpy old person rant for the day:
My dog buddy's family have been chasing moles out of their garage for the past couple of weeks. We have a mole problem at our end of the cul-de-sac, and they seem to be exploring all their options. Earlier this week, my dog buddy's family found a dead mole in their garage, which was probably to be expected sooner or later.
I, of course, immediately suggested a Viking funeral. It's been a long pandemic, and the kids (2 teenage boys) have lacked opportunities for wholesome outdoor activity since their sports have been canceled and gatherings have been curtailed. Their mom was all for it, but the kids and dad kept finding all sorts of reasons why it couldn't be done and claiming there were too many obstacles.
So here's my grumpy old person rant: What is wrong with young people now? They had their very own dead mole and allowed it go to waste by letting their dad just bury it in the woods when they could have put it in a boat fashioned from newspaper, set it on fire, and sailed it across the pond behind our houses? Waste of a perfectly good dead mole.

Kids just don't get to use their imagination like our generation did. Home computers & cell phones have taken away a lot of the fun we used to enjoy. I'm so glad my childhood happened before personal computers got popular.

Plus mole Vahalla sounds far more interesting than a burial.

Dannylion you have summed up and encapsulated my frustration over the past 12 months. I am so tired of the people in my life whinging about "oh the Pandemic! my life is over, I will be trapped here in my house forever! there's nothing to do! All the joy in my life has been sucked out. oh woe oh woe oh dreadful dreadful woe!". (what kind of life is the one defined by 'shopping' and watching sports and binging hundreds of hours of TV shows??) How does one not have
I can picture the glorious send off of the Mole to Valhalla. I would have brought my bottle of Aqua Vitae (from a distillery I visited pre pandemic) and we could take a swig as we wish the mole "Good Journey! and a Safe Crossing!". Hopefully a Raven would put in an appearance or perhaps a cat.

"Waste of a perfectly good dead mole."
For whom?
The mole will decompose in the ground feeding worms which will then poop out what's left (worm castings) and enriching the soil. The bones will decompose too adding calcium and other minerals into the soil.

Hopefully a Raven would put in an appearance or perhaps a cat. I was disappointed that the mole did not get a spectacular send-off, but I can't really be angry at the kids as they are nice boys and generally willing to humor me and even have conversations with me, which most teenagers wouldn't bother to do. They have also cheerfully dragged my various wheelie bins and trash and recycling up my long steep driveway to the curb when it's icy or my bad knee is acting up. I was sad as I thought they had more whimsy and would have had fun adding creative touches to a mole Viking funeral. There would definitely have been a cat. And a dog. And possibly a crow (we don't have ravens here that I know of).

So sorry about this missed opportunity! However, I want you to know that I fully enjoyed reading your description of said events.
If this opportunity should ever present itself again and actually take place, I hope you will snap a few (hundred?) photos and post them here. 🙂 On the other hand, I have no desire to see the actual dead animal. Poor thing.
