For me it was more of 'pies in the sky' floating around. I have spent a lot of time observing groups problem solve. It was fun to see a group really struggling, having that kid offer crazy ideas, and others come up with "yeah but" more practical solutions from them. I spent a lot of time in physics forums before retirement, not much fun, as realities are cut and dried with little in the way of dreams being proffered as real time solutions. We more often than not under consult, destroyed R+D groups aiming for public acceptance over actual design success. Today I seldom take part, with my limited consulting being in weapons design. Too much of that even, after the Biden win.

The reason self driving cars are expected to reduce energy consumption is that the cars will be expensive and most likely will not be individually owned. Instead you’ll pay into a company with a fleet of cars that will be shared. Rather than driving yourself to work and parking your car in a lot for 8 hours, then driving it home and leaving in your garage overnight, the cars will continually shuttle passengers around, then stop at a suburban lot to recharge in the off hours. The advantages would be less traffic slow downs due to less traffic, better opportunities to carpool, and when all cars become self driving, they would be much lighter in construction, so more efficient, and they’ll be better at eco driving and ‘drafting’ in packs.
It will be very different within a couple decades- kind of like the big historic shifts from gas light to electrical, from horse carts to cars, and from land lines to cell phones.

Sounds like a dream similar to public transportation. Still wondering how yet even more different types of solar panels, in shingles and windows, will help with the duck curve (reply #2), when the California grid is currently oversupplied during the wind and solar production window.

I don't see how the act of not owning the car, but still going the same number of miles in a shared car would reduce pollution and traffic. Unless there is a mandatory carpool, or very reduced rates for carpooling or something.
