Very happy to report that my last day of employment is coming soon, later in August. I have been able to max my 401K (26k) for the year. The final paycheck will include a bonus for 'staying' through the sale of the company and I am not certain what to do with it.
This is just a bit earlier than I thought I would be retiring, I am almost 61 and my plan was to be done by 62. The past 6 months have been very stressful so I'm sure there will be a period of adjustment/reset/whatever they call it. Ready for this new stage of life!

Since I am done with my goals for the moment I have done the following -
Put a additional principal payment of $1050 on the Kitchen Reno and put $1K into my HSA for this year. That should help me at tax time and make it so I can get lasik/eye correction surgery in the next while - Hopefully before I move.

Azucena $23,974 of $30,000 (80%) as of 7/9/2021 Payday deposit of $1728. July savings was up and down as we overspent for kids' birthdays - $500 for DD13's hotel stay with friends and $400 for DD9's 'epic' water slide. Both much needed breaks as we continue to be covid wary and weary. Should be on track to make my goal by yearend. I think tracking and reporting here has kept me from loosening the spending too much. We do have some minor home improvements projects to continue. Next up, refinishing the basement stairs to match up with the new basement luxury vinyl. Going to hire someone to stain them. Considering changing out the white wood banister that is constantly dirty from kid fingers. Black metal would be nice, but is it needed? Need to price it out to consider. Azucena $25,702 of $30,000 (86%) as of 8/6/2021

Rukh O'Rorke [2] Multiyear MM/stocks Goal
$2,063.94 (Start=$11,066.31 / Goal=$20,000) 16/26 paychecks for 2021. Currently my job is just a day-to-day reckoning right now. I'm ready to give notice at any minute. I have a potential lead on a new job, but while thinking about it, I'm unsure if I should throw my hat in the ring. I'm so to the bone exhausted, I'd hate to take on a new job and continue to burn out and maybe burn a bridge I could have crossed at a later time. So I'm htinking of early retirement/semi-retirement/self-funded sabbatical. If I knew the stock market would not fall off a cliff in the next couple of years, I'd llikely have quit already. Trying to get my ducks in a row on this. Knowing I'm not really organized enough, have enough free time to think it through, to really be prepared and knowledgeable. But also not sure enough that I will quit make sure to max all my 401k before I leave - you know, in case I don't leave - and then miss on the 3% match. Still have RI going, with a nice project this fall that will fund 2-3 months of living expenses. Can tap into current jobs 401k as I am over 55, and think that (current balance 117k) and RI income could get me to 59.5 then I can access all retirement accounts without penalty. That is 2.5 years - I'm assuming I can make it till my birthday in oct. The only way I am making it through the day is because I'm plotting to quit.... TGIF everyone!

I think I'm several months behind an update. I'll do it this week. Only big news to report now is how my payroll messed up my Roth 401k. My company was acquired and in April we moved to the parent company's 401k. Back in January I set up my contribution. However, since I only started with the company in february, and because my pay check was different every time until mid June I didn't realize the 401k was not being taken out. The first week they did, I contract payroll to say oh hey, I need to contribute 5 missed weeks and you need to give me those matches. They did. Sort of. They took the money from my check, and forgot the match. And the following week took 900+ more than they should have too. They said 2 weeks ago they'd refund the overage contribution, but so far they haven't.
Part of me thinks I should not mention it and just leave the extra money in my 401k, but part of me worries at some point they will take out the money and I will miss it, and they won't put it back in my check.
I'm still making up my mind what to do. I might start looking for new work soon so it might be okay to just leave it.

Hey Savers, My grandbaby was discharged home a few weeks ago, and he's doing really well. I am back at my home now. I will do smilies at the end of the month. I missed the July smilies, so if you haven't been posting updates lately, now or soon would be a good time!

Payday deposit of $1295. I've gotten so used to this process of sitting down each payday and figuring out what our extra will be and swooping it off into savings. DH did request that I let his check sit until the afternoon so he can admire it first before we look poor again LOL. DH has a raise going into effect soon. It's at least $2/hr which will put him at $17. This is all because they have to raise the starting pay to try to hire folks, so he was going to be underpaid compared to them. His boss is looking out for her great employees though and managed to get him and a couple more a little extra. He'll also receive a retention bonus of $500/each in Oct and Jan. Planning to put one into his account and use the other for a weekend trip for the two of us. He's really been great at staying onboard our savings plan. He randomly commented this week that it was still crazy to him that we could just drop $7k on new HVAC, not really even blink, and then build it back up in a few months. The same will happen with a couple of 8th grade trips for DD13 - will get estimates for those yet this month, likely $2k and 500. We're even looking into anonymously funding her best friend's cost because otherwise she won't be able to go to the $2k one. That would have been DH and me for these types of trips - our parents would have had to say no. We love this girl and her mama and would feel blessed to provide this experience for them. I had been thinking it, and DH brought it up separately if I'd thought how it might play out for her not going. Nice to be on the same page. Azucena $27,830 of $30,000 (93%) as of 8/20/2021

Decreased 401k a bit so as not to max out before EOY. Just not sure if I'd get the match in Dec if I hit the limit in Nov. Don't feel like asking just dialed it down a bit.
Rukh O'Rorke [2] Multiyear MM/stocks Goal $-619.59 (Start=$11,066.31 / Goal=$20,000) 17/26 paychecks for 2021. Some investments not paying off....hence a disheartening negative on my multiyear savings....borrowed from my home improvement fund to invest and that is not going well. Hurts a bit but oh well! Other than that kerfuffle, financially things are even keel, other investment accounts doing well to ok, just that one that is not panning out.. Still grinding away, still potentially quitting at any moment......so weird to be concerned about not maxing till year end, but best to plan JIC. Thinking if I do decide to pull the plug, I want to have 2 weeks to myself with it, then 2 weeks notice, and I can max it out with the last paychecks if I think that is best for me. Maybe it doesn't even matter if I'm going to have to access to live off anyway? Lots more to think about....

We finally (after 4 months) got our tax refund. It was quite large because we installed a geothermal system in our new house, which resulted in a large credit (basically off-set our added cost of drilling the wells). I'm trying to figure out how to balance all the money that is in savings right now. We still have home projects to do (grade rest of the yard, add grass, have flower beds and walkway built, etc.), and I do need a new vehicle soon, but once the money is in savings, I really hate to spend it.

I have reached all of my savings goals with the exception of maxing out my 475b--but I'm really close! We started classes last week. Our institution requires masks but not vaccination of the students/employees. At first they weren't going to require masks, which made me very nervous. I'd prefer they have a vaccine mandate but at least I have backing to kick a student out of my class if they won't wear their mask. My students have been good about it, I don't expect any problems. I'm frustrated because I STILL don't have my letter telling me what my raise is going to be. Which means that I have not gotten my raise since the new fiscal year started in July. I'll be retroactively paid for the increase once the university sends out all the letters. But it is frustrating that we are going on 3 months without knowing what our raises will be. I hope everyone is staying safe and are choosing to be vaccinated if you are able to -- the Delta variant is nasty and I'd hate to see any of you fellow racers end up in an ICU unit or worse. Please be safe everyone!

What a generous gift, azucena! I hope the young friend and her family accept it and it turns into a memorable experience for all! Just put the plan in motion. We are donating $1000 to friend G because in poking around her single mother told us that they have some savings for a trip like this. We are donating $2000 for friend E because we have seen this week that her parents would love to send her but likely will not be able to come up with the funds. E is the oldest of 5 - just like me in my family. She has traveled some but this trip will be so meaningful to her. A trusted teacher will take the next step with phone calls to their parents tonight. I'm practically buzzing in my seat right now. Hope this doesn't come off as bragging. This is one of those times when having our financial house in order really pays off. And clearly not going to broadcast it in real life. DH and I are getting a kick out of being the least suspected ones to do this because other than having a pretty nice house, we purposely don't flaunt our wealth. We are each incredulous that we can make these gifts and keep right on trucking.

Azucena $27,830 of $30,000 (93%) as of 8/20/2021Wrote out the trip checks this morning, so this savings update goes in the wrong direction but that's okay. We will eventually make it up. Increases our motivation for the rest of the year since I hate to miss goals DH came home from work grinning about our secret mission. Teacher texted that G's mom cried on the phone and said what a weight that lifts. This woman never cries, and we've been friends for years. G can participate in upcoming fundraisers and likely earn most of the rest. And she is earning babysitting money for souvenirs with two weekly jobs that I know of. Will keep an eye on it to see if she needs more. Teacher couldn't get a hold of E's mom last night but will make contact this week. Putting $1000 in DD13s account right off the bat too. This saves me from remembering $500 payments in the next 5 months. We'll see what she can earn thru fundraising too - current sale is mums for $12 with $6 going to the fund. Should be easy enough to sell through the neighborhood now that the temp is <100 degrees finally. Azucena $23,830 of $30,000 (79%) as of 8/31/2021

Rukh O'Rorke [2] Multiyear MM/stocks Goal $ 905.54 (Start=$11,066.31 / Goal=$20,000) 18/26 paychecks for 2021. Got the promotion ! I've been campaigning for it for about a year, so I will be staying at the job for the foreseeable future, at least a year as thanks to my boss. Good thing I put my 401k to max by years end and not it all in thinking I would leave. As I mentioned, not sure I'd get the match, but now that I'm not immediately leaving maybe I could ask HR. Didn't want to tip my hat, lol! Looking forward to meeting my 2021 goals now and developing even more aggressive ones for 2022.

Well I finally received a check from the IRS - So I put another 2K against the kitchen reno so I feel good about it now being about 20K. For sure it will be under by the new year. I am happy about this, I had a 10 year loan and plan on having it paid off in the next 2 years.
I have extra that I could put down but I am attempting to keep money liquid. I am still jittery about how things are going into the fall and winter. I am looking forward to taking a week towards the end of the month and just chilling. I will probably do my Flu shot and possibility 3rd Covid at that time.
All of my previous goals are still in effect and money has not been used -- though I really hope to be able to start using some for travel in the summer/fall of next year.
Everyone keep up the good work.

I am participating in a free budget bootcamp through Good Budget and the first task was to figure out how much you would need to save for 1 month's worth of expenses. I sat down and budgeted it all up, including roughly what we pay per month on each CC. We need approximately $3700-$3800 for 1 month's expenses. Now I am curious, what would you need? I wonder how average our amount is or if we are WAY HIGH/WAY LOW compared to others.

Nikiz, we did this exercise when we met with a financial planner the month before Covid hit, so Feb 2020. We were right about at $4000. Our property taxes are high so $500/month is for that. We have no debt, but live comfortably on that budget. Of course after Covid we stopped eating out and running around wasting gas so it may be lower now. I am always blown away by people who spend 10k/month. We are only able to retire this year because of our low expenses.
