I used my houses as ATMs so I owe more now than I did when I bought the last one. I just refinanced so my mortgage will last until I am 92. I own 2 trucks I seldom drive and am considering replacing one I don't drive with another I won't drive. I used my HELOC to buy my car, trucks, boats. I don't have an emergency fund I don't have a budget with monthly or weekly amounts and don't really use the annual budget, just change the budget when I don't spend those amounts. I haven't updated my will since 1983. I don't have disability or life insurance I am 100% in equities when I am near retirement age.

Audrey: That's after they tax our 401k's into oblivion, then tell us we make too much to get social security, right? Damn, I guess we better go procreate for a retirement plan I'm sure Junior won't mind! EDIT: Oh, I forgot a sin: just dropped $70 on a pair of rock n republic jeans. In my defense, I'm still arguing with my money conscience about whether I get to keep them or not...

In my defense, I'm still arguing with my money conscience about whether I get to keep them or not... Well, we can't have satan walking around in Levi's, can we? Yes, procreation is your ticket out of this. To atone for all your misdeeds, you must have at least 10 kids to support us future Medicare recipients. I forgot one, as well... I loaned money to a family member. I gave it to them in 2009 and they insisted that they wanted a loan (I offered it as a gift). I am guessing I am never going to see it again.... I will just have to mourn what it could have been in 30 years in a tax sheltered account...

I thought of a couple more: DH and I have never bought used cars. I am seriously considering taking another expensive vacation in Sept because if we don't take it when we're here in Germany it will cost more to travel to Europe after we return to the States.

I guess I should confess in advance - I'm taking the train to meet my girlfriend in a few weeks, and we're having breakfast and a spa morning. I'm thinking I'll drop about $500 that day. But it's been a looooong semester and I DESERVE IT!!! ETA: okay, maybe $300.

lol caught me before i deleted it. Basically i think your spa trip sounds nice and that it doesn't break the intent of any rules since you have the basics already covered. Probably half the sins listed here are fake sins and the people listing their debts are secretly paying 0% interest.

How long can a post here be? Bought a Corvette instead of continuing to drive perfectly usable 2004 GMC Envoy that has been paid off for years! As a bit of a penance though I did keep said Envoy to drive when I have the girls and on rainy days. Or maybe per YM I should have sold it and put the $$ to the new car... Spent Christmas in Scotland last year. Got stranded in Orlando airport for two days and stayed at the Hyatt instead of sleeping in a chair. It gets worse... ... Luggage was lost on trip to Scotland so went out and bought close to new wardrobe instead of washing two outfits I had in the sink of my hotel and stitching together curtains for a Christmas dress... Have two week long vacations (St. John and Florida) as well as a long weekend to Vegas in the next 2.5 months! And I'm not even sorry!

LOL, kari. IMO every adult deserves a bit of "me" time. I'm choosing to spend it catching up with my BFF that I see maybe once a year. And if there's food and a massage thrown in there, so be it. I can afford it.

We've financed our last 3 furniture purchases. Our emergency fund is the available credit on our credit cards. I've taken out 401k loans before. We didn't put 20% down on our house when we bought it.

I got a degree in underwater basketing weaving. It took more more than 4 years. I'm supporting my husband, the SAHP. We'll be helping our kids pay for college. I'll suggest limits on where to attend, but I'm fine with them getting a degree in underwater basket weaving. We don't make a ton of money. Nor do we have a desire to do so. We don't max out retirement contributions. It's not possible on our income. We value time more than we value money. Haha! What's your degree in?

This thread is cracking me up Me too ;D It's funny - many things we describe as "sins" are things that most people would describe as "normal to good." I guess we're doing okay though... we're here, aren't we?!

-Got married six months after I met Loop. -Had our first child a few days before my 19th birthday. (I should really switch the order on these since the pregnancy was the reason for the marriage) -Didn't start saving for retirement until I was 25. -Loop doesn't work, but did take out $20k in student loans to finish her degree after we had kids. -We financed both of our cars, which were purchased new. -We put nothing down on our house that we bought last year. -We don't save for the kids future college expenses. I'm sure I'm forgetting some, but those should be the big ones. Interesting back story! Hey, wasn't it you that posted a thread a few years ago about your cousin (?) who had a one-night stand with a girl and got her pregnant? Whatever happened to him/them? (If I'm remembering the wrong person, disregard.)

"When I went to confession last week my penance was to spend some time thinking about the intent behind the rules and how to accomplish that intent in my life. "
Too bad you couldn't convince him to give you the standard Hail Mary package and forgo the deep theological meditation...

- I could pay my credit card down faster if I was willing to delay Roth IRA contributions, but I prefer to think of retirement-funding as a fixed expense. My cc interest rate is pretty low anyway, so it's not a huge problem.
- My employer is a very small company that doesn't match 401k contributions in any way... at all.
- On a thematic note, I'm a horrible negotiator, and I'll probably spend my entire career being underpaid compared to my peers in the same profession. I've always been very hard on myself...my own worst critic, as the old saying goes. I'm pretty self-deprecating, and therefore I set myself on the back foot in negotiating situations.
The latter two really bring me down. I'm frugal enough that I'm not worried about eventual lifestyle creep; with a bump in pay or retirement benefits, I'm confident my net worth (already trending upward) would get a real shot in the arm, over time. Unfortunately, identifying the problem and solving the problem are two different tasks entirely.
Of course, a new job would help. I'm working on it, but dragging my feet a bit at the moment.

Hey, wasn't it you that posted a thread a few years ago about your cousin (?) who had a one-night stand with a girl and got her pregnant? Whatever happened to him/them? That was my youngest brother. That whole story is a mess. Last I heard, my brother and his baby momma were still supposed to pay child support to the grandfather who legally has custody. However, the baby is really with the grandmother who took the baby and went back to Germany. We've all told my brother that this is illegal and if he'd go to the court he should be able to get the child support dropped. He's not paying it anyway, so hasn't bothered. At some point years from now they'll come after his tax return or garnish his check and we'll get a lifetime of telling him we told him so. The grandmother went back to Germany because she'd be diagnosed with breast cancer by the way, so she wanted to be closer to family while undergoing treatment. She's severed all contact with my family, so none of us know how she's doing. The baby momma is totally estranged from her family as well, because she was lying about pretty much everything leading up to the pregnancy. She was keeping a very detailed journal which her parents found shortly after the baby was born, which brought out the truth. She claimed she was a virgin and that the fling with my brother was the only time, which is why her parents got so pissed when my brother insisted on a paternity test. She was I guess very, very, detailed in describing all her previous boyfriends including uh... "dimensional information", which positions they'd tried, which ones she preferred, etc. She was sleeping with several guys around the time she met my brother, but the baby really was his. She also knew about the pregnancy pretty early, but was too afraid to tell her parents about it. She originally claimed she didn't know she was pregnant until she contacted my brother, and at that point she was already like 6 months along, so abortion wasn't an option. The whole thing is sad and chock full of stupid. Would make a good Jerry Springer episode if the parties involved were screamers. ETA - Oh, and I almost forgot, my mom called yesterday to let me know that my brother is currently in jail. He was arrested for driving an unregistered vehicle, on a suspended license, while drunk. I think there was a drug paraphernalia charge too. The passenger got hit with marijuana possession. This is his second DUI, so real jail time is a possibility.

Wow, that sucks. I can't believe they took the baby to GERMANY. That's messed up... ETA: Sorry to hear about your brother's current situation also Sounds like there's a lot of different things going on. Are you guys close?

Geez....this could take me a while.... Racked up $13k in cc dept on minimum wage right out of high school. Financed a car at 72 mos/6%, and my mom had to cosign. Bought a fixer upper with 3.5% down, its a total money pit too! Supported a deadbeat unemployed fiance for 2 years. Only put 8% into my 401K. Do not coupon at all! Dine out every weekend with my mommy, and we order drinks (gasp!!!!). Drink nearly $200/mo in alcohol. Smoked for 13 years. Take a grand tropical vacation EVERY YEAR! Being good is boring! And hey, at least in hell I'll have a good tan! (which reminds me....I've also been known to pay for tanning memberships!)
