We received a letter in the mail today that all IHSS (In-Home Support Services) payments are being reduced by 3.8% effective immediately and will be that way until June 2012. The letter says this is because of a new law that was passed to reduce IHSS spending. (We are in California)
This reduction for the payment for doing my husband's dialysis at home will mean about $50 less for us to live on each month.
This comes on top of no SSDI increase for the past two years.
Our cost of living, eating and heating are rising but our fixed income is dropping.
All is not lost, I still have some other income. But, I can't help but think this will hit some people very hard.

Sorry to hear that, and I'm sure it will be a struggle for you, but it seems like California is a lost cause financially.
Other state, federal and local cuts are on the way and people have to suffer over it due to the political mistakes of the past.

I think everyone in CA is going to feel it this time around. Our budget is a mess and only getting worse. They have already removed dental and vision coverage from Medicaid and I wonder what will be next. DH may at some point qualify for a transplant, but at this rate Medicare/MediCal might just end up saying "no." They have already done it in AZ...

I'm sorry to hear that. A close friend of mine is reliant on SSDI, medicaid and medicare in CA. He also receives in-home care. The budget cuts are bad and looking like they will only get worse.

It is not just CA that is in deep financial trouble and we will see a lot more of this. Good thing that we made sure that at least the first $10M can be left to our heirs tax free. Government would just waste the money on providing such non-essentials as a transplant to people on SSDI

With the financial condition our state is in, I'm surprised IHSS was not cut by even more. Things are going to get really bad before they ever get better.

I'm sorry to hear that as well. We are in WA state, but we've found out that the facility where my disabled DGD lives is being closed. And there are no really good options for her placement. She may even be moved across the state - she's only 17.

I'm in gardening's state too & just heard that special ed therapeutic services currently being provided to kids in the school setting are being eliminated at the 1st of the year. All those special ed kids will have to be hauled out of school and taken to private providers to get the services if the school districts don't fund it (not sure how they would when their budgets all got cut too).
I can't believe the critical services that are being cut. Is there any government level that hasn't spent themselves into oblivion?

No, I don't think so.

Hey not so fast I remember reading this article not too long ago: online.wsj.com/article/SB124415780405186905.htmlMeanwhile, North Dakota expects to have a surplus of about $700 million in June 2011, the end of its next budget cycle. Have no idea if this is just 'robbing Peter to save for Paul' or something similar but ND has a $700 mil surplus lol

Iowa made a 2.5% cut on for all Medicaid services last year. We are about to get a new governor and I fear things will only get worse. He's already been running his mouth about changes he wants to make and doesn't seem to care what kind of impact it will have on people.
