Minorities and COVID-19 vaccines

On my way home from my sisters the other night I was listening to the radio and scanned for a station. It happened to stop on the local PBS station. I don't know if it was the national program NPR or the local PBS station story. They were talking about what else, the covid virus. I tuned in about halfway in the story I think. They were talking to a lady minority activist about the coming vaccines and how it was going to be dispersed and to whom.

At one point in the interview the activist started to talk about how a lot of the minority population didn't trust the government on how safe the vaccines are and felt that it was and I quote, "a way the government would use the vaccines to suppress the minority population" and would not get it if offered. I was stunned at what she was saying. That the government was in some way going to use the drug to experiment on the population or somehow control them. I've never even heard of this before. Do minorities really think this??

Now I know PBS programing is a little to the left on its reporting but I found this to be irresponsible reporting by PBS. To allow this person to spew this conspiracy was too much. I didn't hear the entire broadcast as I arrived home about then.

If you are interested, research the Tuskegee Syphilis Study. It was a 40 year study on the natural progression of syphillis in Blacks long past the time when there was a cure. The American Scandal podcast did a story on this.

Given what I heard on this podcast and that minorities are already more impacted by the Trump virus than the Caucasians, I can see why the minorities may feel this way.

It's not the COVID-19.  

If you are not going to call it Covid, then the name would be Trump Virus.

Saw on Soledad O'Brien's show what Denver is trying to do.  They have been setting up pop up clinics all summer and fall to provide health information, give covid tests, flu and other vaccinations, etc.  It's all been outside.  They are trying to get minorities to trust them.

They are in the process of obtaining indoor spaces where they can continue because being outside will not work with it is snowing.

History of medical experimentation by the government on minorities has created a distrust of stuff like this. On top of that, minorities have gotten sub-standard care pretty consistently from our medical system.

I don't think NPR reporting the truth that we have created a problem of distrust by minorities is irresponsible. It is a real obstacle that will have to be negotiated while trying to vaccinate our citizens.
