is it worthwhile to turn it off at night when I go to bed and during the day when I am at work at stuff? It seems a hassle and I am skeptical how much electricity it will actually save....

Well if you have an old CRT monitor it might use more than average. Personally I think standby or sleep mode should be enough to make the 'downtime' on your computer not effect your electric bill that much, but I don't have any specific watt numbers. Google is my friend: michaelbluejay.com/electricity/computers.htmlSome numbers. If those numbers are to be believed, putting it on sleep or standby mode will save 90 to 99% of your electricity.
