I was talking to some acquaintances. They have a son the same age as DS.
During COVID, they started hiking the High Peaks of the Adirondacks as a family to get out the house, enjoy nature, detach from the electronics. Their son would run ahead of the family and get to the peak about an hour before everyone else. He told the family it was because he enjoyed the view and the quiet time.
Last weekend, they found him on the peak playing Pokemon Go. You can only get cell service on the peaks, and apparently there are lots of rare pokemons up on the peaks and hardly anyone is able to get them.
Acquaintences totally got played.

SESFW - Pokemon was an animated kid's tv show that came on after kids got home from school (believe it originated in Japan) back in the 90's with a bunch of animals who have powers and people who "collected" them in these white and red balls. In the 90's it was massively popular as kids collected cards, toys, watched the show and so on. In the last so many years they came out with game on the phone where people playing it go out and capture the animals. Going to different areas or hard to reach places can get you more rare animals. I was never into the show as I was a bit too old for it but the brother of a girl I knew and all his friends loved it. I never played the game but there's people at work during the height of it's popularity who were meeting up to go out on break and collect the animals. I'd bet money some of them are still playing it now.
That aside, wasn't one of the things parents liked about that game was that it got their kids out of the house? Most video games have the person in front of a TV, computer or phone. On the bright side the acquaintances still got him out of the house.

Eh, he was out in nature and ran up the peak, so exercise. In my mind that is a win.
Much better than sitting at home.

My daughter loooooves hiking AND pokemon. Most of the time there's no pokemon or service in the areas where we go hiking. But yeah - it's a great motivator!!

I am so out of things ....... What are pokemons? This is a serious question. It's a game that morphed out of old geo-caching software. The idea is you walk around catching imaginary pokemon animals. You can battle others, spin wheels at pokestops to get potions and pokeballs (to heal and catch pokemon). The idea is to get people out of the house and walking.

Eh. I had to bribe the peanut to take walks by getting the pokemon go app on my phone. But, March/April was nasty for us. I needed to do something so that she would agree to walk outside in 40 degree, damp, windy weather. Also, I guess I wouldn't be surprised at the kids.
Devices go in one spot in our house. If we tell the kids to put them there and leave them at home, we actually check the spot before we go. Because kids.
We also tend to ask them to stay off at certain times like if they are visiting grandma or what not. But if they don't listen to us, the phones go in either DH's or my pockets.

I like this kid. He evaluated the task his parents devised for him and determined that by complying he could meet their expectations and achieve an otherwise unattainable goal with benefit to himself. He figured out how to complete the task and get what he wanted at the same time. These are useful traits.
It is unfortunate that he felt he had to lie about his motivation for running ahead.

My neighbors play Pokemon as a family. It gets everyone outside being physically active, encourages conversation (not an insignificant goal when the kids are teenagers), engages critical thinking skills to facilitate the search and capture of their quarry, gets everyone working together on a common objective, and everyone has fun.
