so sit up and take notice. I'd forgotten there even is such a thing. It was what was usually for supper on Sunday nights when my kids were little. (Mommy, do we get to have Welsh Rabbits for supper?)
Now besides wanting a cigarette, I want Welsh Rarebit.

Nope. There's probably no Welsh in it, either. Who do we sue for deceptive advertising?

Isn't that just toast and cheese?

Isn't that just toast and cheese? Yup. The cheese sauce is dressed up with Worcestershire sauce and sometimes beer. My superbrain started coagulatin' a la Bugs Bunny, and thought it might be good with the cheese sauce poured over sliced tomatoes and avocadoes.

Disliked it as a kid and no interest ever as an adult. The same with chipped beef on toast. Blea.

So this is basically just another poor persons SOS dish?
One that was often served in our home was creamed peas and tuna over toast. I actually liked it. Tried to find a recipe online and of the recipes I found, none dared to actually post of picture of the dish. LMAO

Mom used to make it because Dad just LOVED it while serving in the Navy. I've never made it. DH hates anything with anything resembling white sauce on his food. And yes, there were foods that Dad learned to hate while in the Navy. He never ate orange marmalade again once he got out. Said it was on the breakfast table every morning he was in. Every. Single. Morning.

I kinda liked that too.

Said it was on the breakfast table every morning he was in. Every. Single. Morning. Orange marmalade to prevent scurvy? I'd wondered about that. Unfortunately, for those serving in the Philippines, there was no fresh milk for the sailors, so they only had the lovely dried milk that you added water to. My Dad & his buddies all ended up with bad teeth. Mom said he could never get enough "real" milk when he got back home. Being a farm kid, and having access to fresh milk every day was something he really missed.

I had a friend who couldn't wait to turn 18 and join the Navy. We were 17 when we finished high school, but her parents wouldn't sign for her to join. She loathed carrot/raisin salad. Her dad kept telling her she was going to see a lot of it in the Navy. First night at boot camp? Carrot/raisin salad. irishpad, creamed tuna and peas on toast is made the same way as SOS. Make a roux, add milk to create a white sauce. Add tuna, using the kind that comes in a sealed packet because it doesn't have to be drained. Thaw frozen peas in nuke box. Drain. Add to tuna in white sauce. Et voila! Note that the above recipe is very precise It's because I cook using the by-guess-and-by-golly method. Actually, melt 2 TBSP butter over med-low heat, add 2 TBSP flour, whisk until bubbly; slowly add 3/4 cup milk a little at a time whisking constantly until it thickens. Then throw in tuna and thawed and drained peas. Stir. Serve over toast. Done. Don't forget to say grace: "Good God, let's eat."

I'm actually a damn good cook (just made beef wellington for my most recent auctioned off dinner) but have honestly never even thought of making this..... I know how to make a good roux, i'm an expert at gravies........... I'm going to do this sometime soon, inflict this dinner on the seminarians living here. lol

It amazes me how many who like sausage gravy over biscuits hate SOS. Maybe it's the name?

Of course, the cheese sauce could be put on hamburgers or vegetables. Then Wow.

Tennesseer Pay attention. The secret to dynamite sausage gravy is using coffee for part of the liquid...if using a cup of liquid, make a quarter of it coffee. Artemis Windsong Double the recipe.

I will not eat shit let alone a shingle. (An unappetizing, well-done, thin slice of roast beef comes to mind as a shingle).

Maybe it's also a nickname for another dish?
