Lena I hope you choose to read the P&M thread. This is one prinicipal's decision which has been in place for over 6 years. If the parents really wanted to over turn it my guess is they would have.
Also notice in the blog: While we haven't been able to track down another school that bans homemade lunches outright,
This again one principal's decision. No need to see it as anything more and a reason to panic.

Yes, I will read the PM thread.
Even if it's just one school today, the fact that someone had a "brilliant" idea to have that much control over something they really shouldn't is wrong. And as everything else in life, it only has to start somewhere. Who is to say that next yr another principal will not come up with some other "brilliant" idea, kwim?

Quit it optmist... i've won her over... you can't have her back... lol oped if she wants to homeschool I have no issue with that. Using one isolated prinicipal's policy that isn't in her neighborhood as a reason to homeschool, I do have an issue with that. ;D

Lena I believe its a bad idea too. However, the parents at that school apparently are OK with it enough that it still stands and they haven't forced a change back. Its your life, do what you want. I choose to deal with what is and not worry very much about what might be. What might be may never come.

I actually don't agree with the policy either... it is very isolated, and i don't see how it stands... i've looked at a couple sources and i can't tell for sure how long its been in practice, but i don't think it would stand up to a challenge... I just like to play like i'm recruiting... I think everyone should do what works best for them, and make a well formed decision... i don't really advocate a snap judgement based on a single policy ... ... although these things do add up some times...

I'm already planning on homeschooling even though DS would be allowed to bring his lunch to that school because of food allergies. But did you see what the lunch looked like?

Optimist
My point was that every other day schools come up with yet another insane thing - teachers can't use red markers, lunches can't be brought in, you can't hug a friend, text books are being changed, etc etc etc
I just can't stand it anymore. School is suppose to be for one thing and one thing only - education. Instead it became about everything but. Self-esteem and nutrition and politics. I just don't have patience to deal with all that.

Then give homeschooling a try, Lena. If you find that it isn't for you and your family, the public school system will still be there.

Why not?!?!!?

...and textbooks that don't refer to the civil rights movement as "trouble ahead".

I think this is another great example of white people trying to save those poor minorities, because us whities know what is best.
You know - like Dangerous Minds, or The Blind Side, or The Soloist. It is good we are here. Otherwise, how would all those poor people learn from us. I mean, look at the white people - a pillar of nutritional virtue. We need to spread our superior ways.

I think Waldorf schools have something similar for lunch. A mommy on the MSN pregnancy board has kids in a Waldorf school and if they pack a lunch they're required to only use recycled materials and generate no trash; no clothes with any kind of writing or characters on them; etc. It's a very green school and I'm not sure if that's standard for Waldorf schools or not though.
I don't think I'd be a good homeschooling parent. My language and math skills just aren't good enough. Not to mention not having the patience to teach...

"About 86 percent of the district's students qualify for free or reduced price school lunches because their families live close to the poverty line." So 86% of those kids wouldn't bring their own lunch anyway - due to its being free or at a reduced price. The rule then targets the 14% who do not get subsidies. Are these 14% disproportionately obese? I bet not...
ETA: We will be homeschooling for 3 weeks this summer as a test run. If it takes, our children will opt out of the system. I see the posts that point out that this is one issue at one school, but trust me - all schools have their own level of bad decisions and political infighting.

There's no way something like that would stand here. The school lunches are too unhealthy and there are plenty of health conscious hippies in this area of CA. The principal who proposed this would be out of a job within the year.

Get Jamie Oliver on the case! Totally! Only in America could you have a system that counts french fries as a serving of vegetables and a ban on lunches brought from home since they might be unhealthy. It's just nuts.

This principal will eventually come up against someone who will challenge it. That may be why it is in the news now. School lunches around here are gross. DD is picky and won't eat most of them. I wouldn't home-school. I'd fight it, but then again, I have time on my hands, a dislike of people in authority, and a low tolerance for stupid rules.

This is about getting maximum school funding via 100% school lunch program participation.
This is how Title I funds are determined in case you didn't know. They count the numbers of kids on the free lunch program and then come up with a school's allotment.
Now, being a Title I funded classroom aide you'd think I'd be all for it. Not on your life. I am outraged at the buy lunch or go hungry policy.
Why are parents supposedly okay with this? Why would a large group of American adults be okay with giving up their right to determine what food is best for their children?
Maybe a look at the demographics of South Lawndale, Illinois will help uncover this mystery.

Thyme, interesting theory but I guess you didn't read the article? The principal's name is Elsa Carmona and per the video clip I found looks like she has Hispanic or Spanish ancestry. cps.answerstv.com/AnswersTV/Channel.aspx?ChannelID=8c947178-74b9-4e20-ab6f-403b35a0bb9b&StartPoint=Folder3006&PlayItem=9920&AP=trueThe clip is about a Barrel of Monkeys literacy project but it also features a few looks at the principal as well.
