There are many posts about "rules to live by" (a.k.a YM bible statements), but I am curious about interesting/useful things you learned from YM that are not necessarily "Life lessons".
A few years ago someone posted about a free book store in the city where I lived. I would have never known about it if it wasn't for YM
Yesterday Thyme posted about a software that looks really interesting (thank you, btw) that I never heard of.
Those are just two quick examples.
What are yours?

Actually, just the other day there was a thread about Kiva.org - Never heard of it before then. I checked it out, and it's definitely something I'd like to do - once I get back to work and actually have money to lend out!!

I got a virus last week and a poster on EE gave me the link to show how to get rid of it. Not YM, but Money Boards.

The book suggestions in random or targeted posts have led me to titles I did not know about. Within each book there are nuggets of gold that I have tried to apply.

The book suggestions in random or targeted posts have led me to titles I did not know about. Within each book there are nuggets of gold that I have tried to apply. I'll second this. I have read at least 6 books the past year which I learned about from this or the old YM forum. May be early dementia kicking in, but I am much more interested in reading economics now than when I was taking the classes in college. May be then it was only theoretical, and now it is personal.

I had no idea that cable was an evil budget killer. Or that tipping was the true measure of my humanity or generosity. ;D

Things I learned about in Your Money? Total Money Makeover by David Ramsey. I borrowed the book from the library, mostly out of curiosity, read it in three days, and it's working. Meetup.com. I enrolled in a couple of groups, haven't gone to any meetings yet. I am looking forward to that, but it's an uphill because I am very, very shy. It sounds like a great idea, and worth a try.

I learned that I can download audio books from the local library. Saves me a good bit of money.

I learned that debit cards are not necessarily the safest cards to carry and that using a rewards cc for everyday expenses can pay off ( as long as I don't carry a balance)

Way back when I learned about the 0%, no transfer fee, many month offers from Credit Cards. And using them to pay less interest on debt that was being paid down. It was so oft repeated that I actually ran some numbers and took the plunge. Saved me about $350! Thanks YM!
I also read some of the book suggestions and what all the hype about Dave Ramsey was. Thanks YM!

I learned that people often give a lot of bad or misinformed advice on discussion boards, and often personal opinions and risk tolerances as irrefutable financial advice for the masses. Not that I've ever been guilty of this myself, mind you.
