Can you use a "pack llama" or a "pack goat" to carry some of the stuff when you hike? I hear a Pack Goat can carry 8 to 10 pounds. Guess you'd need a herd of pack goats. I've done goat packing before! They are so sweet (neutered mail Alpine dairy goats). They can pack about 35lbs. Unfortunately they are restricted from areas which may have Big Horn Sheep because domesticated sheep and goats can pass their diseases to Big Horn Sheep.

I’m down for a group hike too! Women of YM retreat [img src="https://i239.photobucket.com/albums/ff155/JiminiChristmas/ymamsmiles/wink.png" alt=" " src="//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/wink.png" class="smile"] I am all over this! I backpacked the Grand Canyon rim to rim 7 years ago. My supplies and I are way overdue for another backpacking trip. Wasn't that fun? I solo hiked it in 2009 as my Farewell to AZ trip a month or two before we moved to Germany. I wasn't sure if I would be able to do it when I returned to the States...whenever that would be. Unfortunately I sprained my ankle about a month before and wasn't able to train as much as I would have liked to. But it was fun and so very beautiful. I even got a chance to see the Desert Big Horn Sheep when I did a side trek from Phantom Ranch. I understand how people can devote their lives to studying the Canyon. What a special place!

I think the flaw with living frivolously is that $1 spent frivolously does not equal $1 saved. People who live frivolously tend to pay higher effective tax rates, more interest on debts, PMI, etc..., and the money doesn't get a chance to appreciate. It's not even necessarily that they are spending more on fun stuff, their delayed gratification is just externally imposed. I wish discussing finances wasn't so socially taboo. I feel like a lot of friends and family could live a lot better than they do with a bit more guidance. I disagree a bit! There is a reason it is taboo. Money is such a marker of success and worth - whether we agree or buy into it or not. Discussing money usually means someone wins and someone loses. Sure - knowledge is power - but it can also damage relationships. I'm not sure what my family would think or do if they knew I was worth 7 figures. Maybe sibling is also doing well? who knows?

Yes! But, not sure how much it would take off your back, as she'd have to carry her own food and water. We have a pretty big group going. We could probably arrange a support vehicle to supply food, or people could join at different spots and provide extra supplies as needed [img src="https://i239.photobucket.com/albums/ff155/JiminiChristmas/ymamsmiles/smug.gif" src="//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/grin.png" class="smile" alt=" "] pffft! We need to research edible weeds. When I was hiking in michigan's upper peninsula, there were random raspberry bushes around. I partook.

I looked up the Grand Canyon Rim to Rim. Looks fun.
Earlier on this thread there was a packing list and equipment. All you have to do is google training for GC Rim to Rim.

MPL.....let's be smart....saddle up our ponies and do it on horseback! LOL Unfortunately, they're not allowed on the AT. So, if you want to join us you'll have to lug a pack. Although I'm still unclear if we could get away with pack goats...looking into it. Hmmm - maybe you could hire a pack boy to schlep everything except your water bottle. It’d be kind of like how rich people made pilgrimages back in the Middle Ages.

I have friends with alpacas. Can we use those? Pack animals are NOT allowed on the trail. This includes horses, donkeys, llamas and alpacas. www.nps.gov/appa/planyourvisit/pets.htmThey didn't say goats! Sedan chair with human porters?

I know someone who did the JMT as part of group mule trip. There's a lot of mule sh*t on the trail. But I'm not hiking with mules. They really do stink and pee everywhere.

For real? You guys just hijacked my thread to talk about spending time in the Grand Canyon?? <style></style> It's totally along the line of discussing doing what you can while you still can. Seriously though, some things should not be put off. I save a lot, but I've done a lot of frivolous too. I could be rolling in it rich had I stayed in the house I bought for 42K in town instead of building a big place in the country, but I have really loved living here (save for the flooding basement issues). To me, being able to live how I want when I'm younger is just as important as after I'm retired. I've also blew money on plenty of "toys", I had a sled that cost more than my current van did, but I put thousands of miles on that thing and hauled it all over with my ex and we had such a blast on those things. I'm kind of half-assed thinking about getting myself another one...either that or a 3 up UTV. These days I drive cheap vehicles, but when I was younger I walked into a Ford dealership and ordered a brand new diesel truck with every option and customized exactly how I wanted it. It cost more than my annual base salary! That was 20 years ago and there's a possibility I'm still paying for that truck as I rolled some into a refinance, but damn that was fun. It was fun ordering it, it was fun taking delivery, it was fun driving that thing all over the country pulling my camper and staying at all the National Parks. It's something I probably wouldn't do anymore now (especially since the same truck is more like 75K), but I'm glad I did then. Don't regret it a bit. You should get your pilot's license.

This thread inspired me to spend frivolously. I just spent $9 on a lottery. It's for a permit to hike The Wave in Antelope Canyon. www.thewave.info/#

""I'll hike with you any day! I want to section hike the PCT and do other long trails when I'm retired... Hopefully young enough to still enjoy and carry a heavy pack!"""
And hopefully, rich enough to afford some of the nifty light-weight technology - a water filtration system for stream/spring water. MRE meals. You'll probably be able to cut that 45 lbs in half. (but you still need plenty of socks).
Have we met? I'm pretty rich. Well.... rich like you maybe? Not like Bill Gates.
In reality, I don't really think a lot of the UL (ultra light) sets up are SAFE quite frankly. That's no where near enough clothing IMO in that listing. I also carry mace and a bunch of other stuff even when I day hike. I'm pretty risk adverse... I probably carry 20lbs just in my day pack.... but my new poles are lighter than those. I'm not a huge fan of MRE meals. I like real food and also dehydrate my own. I like salt but many of these meals are just too much. And that example just has GUs and chews. Gross. I'm not going months on end without fresh vegetables and fruit, either. But to each their own.

I'm in! Hiking even part of the PCT is on my list.
To get a bit back on track.... it depends. I don't save as much for retirement as most people here (MPL?). I spend a frivolously (cute little rv, Disney with DH, etc). I limit my debt and am responsible with the money we make. BUT, I am also fully aware that I am in remission (maybe) with multiple cancers and have lupus. I do things today rather then hoard them for tomorrow. I also make sure it's something I want, not that I think is expected of me 😋😎 Eventually, I will not win the devil's coin toss. In my case, I think it makes sense.
