That is ridiculous. I hope you feel better soon. If you happen to have a pulse oximeter, you might want to break it out. I've been meaning to get one, maybe now is a good time? There have been a number of reports of coronavirus patients not noticing shortness of breath despite significantly reduced lung function-something to do with the carbon dioxide exchange and lack of lung swelling/inflammation, I’m forgetting the details (and just to clarify, I am a PhD not an MD). If you are planning to buy one anyway it’s not a bad thing to have on hand these days.

I can never get the quote feature right. Anyway, yes I had a terrible headache. I didn’t take any Tylenol until my fever came down. My chest was a little tight and I did have a dry cough. The headache and body aches were the shitty parts. I called the public health department and asked if I could speak to an actual nurse instead of the medical assistant at the clinic who I don't really think is qualified to give medical advice... The public health nurse said there is something else going around here where people have a really bad headache and high fever that lasts multiple days but they've been testing negative for COVID. She said since I am high-risk I can get testing through them, but since there's no treatment and it will be more than 2 weeks for a result, they are telling people to just stay home, quarantine, drink fluids, and go to ER if we develop breathing issues. The breathing issue part is weird for me. I stopped smoking cigs a few years ago because I started having problems breathing. But, I still smoke cannabis. I haven't smoked any in days and always have a bit of the smoker's lung feeling and I always cough throughout the day. Today is the first day I have been awake for more than 30 minutes at a time, so hopefully I will start feeling better. Whatever this is, it sucks...

Texas is in the top 5 states for our contribution to national case totals. And meanwhile, state leadership (if you can call it that) invites the NRA to move here. I'm not sure what re-homing a charity via paperwork and crap has to do with Covid. It is more likely that the NRA's employees are all working remotely than any retail, food service or manufacturing company. Changing their incorporation will not only take time, but also holds zero guarantees that a single person will move to Texas. The top executives are under fire from the NY DA's office for pilfering - forgot exact changes, that is why texas invited them?

I'm sort of waiting to see what happens after the Sturgis biker rally is over. Approximately 250,000 bikers in one town for 10 days. A reporter that was hanging around there claimed they only saw around 10 people wearing masks over a 2 hour time period. This could get ugly. Is that larger or smaller or the usual crowd total? And they come form all over the country - right? I can't imagine! and no masks? yikes!

Thanks CCL! I guess 50% of bikers are staying away. Interesting.

Big Ten football season is being canceled as per the detroit free press. The only two college presidents to vote in favor of playing were (drumroll please) Nebraska and Iowa. Not sure whether to sigh in relief that it’s canceled, shake my head at NE and IA, or admire the consistency of those states, as reported by Drama and theotherme.... The joke on Twitter is Iowa and Nebraska will play football against each other--best out of 7

Football is such a money maker for schools that have big programs. It is quite a thing that they are canceling or even postponing. The NCAA is a gross organization that takes advantage of young men. Shutting down a season is the first time they even look like they care about their players. It probably has more to do with ticket sales than concern for the students. It may also be that they are smart enough to realize they will look like assholes if they have a season and a bunch of players get sick. Meanwhile, they cancel all the rich white kid sports, and those kids are safe.
Football, every play, 7 guys are within a couple of feet of 7 other guys. Face to face. There seems to be breathing, sometimes talking, there is yelling. And then someone yells something and all of those guys get much closer, until they are practically kissing. Then they all get in two little circles and talk and yell and breathe and then line back up. After the game is over, they all go the locker room and shower together. Seems like a series of bad ideas - not even counting the concussions or busted joints.

Changing their incorporation will not only take time, but also holds zero guarantees that a single person will move to Texas. I noted the invitation issued to the NRA by Texas' attorney general (under multiple indictments himself) as an indicator of a state whose leadership is more interested in political pandering than actual leadership efforts to address the fact that Texas is one of 5 major outbreaks at this time. Moving their state of incorporation will not materially impact the current litigation because it relates to alleged past activities. Our AG just wanted to try to make political hay while the sun shines and he remains at liberty.

I ordered one from a FB ad on April 28 and it arrived in early June- far later than promised. I chose that one because it was made in USA. I can't even find their site anymore although the FB page is still up. So, sadly, that's a dead end. www.facebook.com/permalink.php?story_fbid=133205565001013&id=113347363653500If you try one of the "mainstream: retailers such as Walgreen's or CVS, you should be able to get a dependable one although you'll undoubtedly have to wait.

I bought a continuous blood oxygen monitor a couple months ago so I could monitor my husband, and show the people at the hospital real data if I have to make a case to get him in. I suspect sleep apnea with him but can’t get him to do anything about it.

Good to know. If I get this I'll be on my own- DS and DDIL live 3 hours away and have small children so there's no way I want them to try and take care of me. I'm glad to be able to monitor my own blood oxygen levels, just in case.

Two high schools in my county are shut down. One is shutting until Aug 31 and I'm not sure about the other. Face to face started last week and 7 days in the high schools have a majority of the 59 positive cases at schools. 45 out of 59 cases are either teachers/staff or at the high school. But hundreds at each school are quarantined, and there were news reports from the parents of two of the positive high schoolers last week saying they were at school without masks and not socially distanced. There are over 800 people quarantined. One high school has 15 positive cases and waiting on the results of 15 more tests to see how much more they may need to quarantine. These are larger schools with 2400 and 2700 kids.
I also saw that Georgia now has the highest new daily cases for the last 7 days. We had 100k cases in early July, 200k cases early August, and now we have 222k cases.

Local media reports that " the rolling average of positive cases over the past seven days jumped to 24%, by far the highest of the pandemic, according to figures from the state Department of Health Services.", whatever that means. I think that translates "you are screwed"

The B1G and Pac-12 both postponed all fall sports to spring yesterday.
Now sports reporters are finally asking if it isn't safe for colleges to play sports, how is it safe for high schools to play, especially football.
Time will tell.
Our numbers were lower yesterday. However, one of the Test Iowa sites was destroyed in the big storm on Monday. I'm guessing the swabs they had (storm was in afternoon) were destroyed and appointments canceled until further notice. The people who were tested earlier that day have to be tested elsewhere. This is not the fault of Test Iowa or it's procedures. Mother Nature spoke and took it away.

My area is getting ready for the rodeo and the county fair...

Iowa State Fair was cancelled. It brings in over a million people a year.
My county fair went on, without grandstand entertainment. Cases have gone up since then. Don't know if it's related.

And the parents at these schools as well as ones at nearby counties that are starting digital are kicking up a huge fuss. Many claiming it is no big deal and we need to keep the schools open. Lots of them don't seem to care if their kid was in class, neither with a mask, with someone that is now positive for covid. But a lot of the sports parents are upset too. Apparently the schools don't quarantine the kids that are exposed to someone if they are wearing a mask, so all of the athletes are wearing them in hopes that they can participate in games since they can't play if they are in quarantine. And I just read they closed a third high school in my county until Aug 31, so now 3 of the 4 high schools are forced to be digital. And the updated covid positive count is 78.

I live in an area that has a large number of stay at home moms. The public schools did a really good job with online education during the lockdown. I was so impressed that I pulled my daughter out of a private school and put her in the public school. I’m sure it’ll be even better, now that they’ve had all summer to prepare more. When the schools asked us to pick whether we wanted to do online or in person, I figured that most of the stay at home moms would choose online, and my daughter would be going to a half empty school.
Only 20% of the children in my district are going to be online. I don’t get it. If I didn’t have to work, and all of my children were neurotypical , there’s no way in hell I would be sending them to school, even with the massive safety precautions they’re taking.

Most of the parents in my county are stay at home too. It is a very conservative area, and split between those with lots of money and those without. The poorer ones can't afford to have the second parent work, and the rich ones don't need it. Yet they all wanted the kids at school. Only 23% of the families here opted for distance learning though there are many banding together to pay private tutors for pods.

Interesting article on possibly why there is such a wide range of responses. No symptoms to death Previous exposure to other corona viruses may protect some people via T cells. Also might explain why SE Asia has low numbers of people with Covid 19. Local bat populations with corona viruses (I’m thinking also previous exposure in SE Asia to the 2003 SARS, but Asian population also accustomed to wearing masks) www.ledger-enquirer.com/news/coronavirus/article244852012.html

It's only a sample size of two, but the SAHM's I've spoken with recently are at their wits end with having been locked up with their kids for the past 6 months. My ex-SIL has 5 kids she was trying to keep on track with home schooling this Spring and it didn't go well. She said the oldest and the youngest were good but all the ones in the middle were a shit show. The school board meets tonight to (hopefully) make a decision. The recommended for our county by the state is in-person for grade school and hybrid for secondary, with the option of 100% online for anyone that wants it.
