High school softball state tournament started this morning. Information sent out by athletic union said bleachers would not be used and fans had to bring lawn chairs. Photos from this morning show the bleachers are packed. Reporters are going crazy because nobody closed off the bleachers. So in two weeks......

Thank you I’m just sad bc I don’t see an easy way out or a return to quasi normal...but you’re right, we personally are okay. We can keep doing this if we have to, and that’s a privilege in itself. Also Moderna is starting phase III trials on its vaccine tomorrow. Fingers crossed. I am still hopeful that a vaccine will get us interacting normally again by sometime in January. Hopefully I am not being too optimistic. I think the economic fallout may last for significantly longer, but once I get a vaccine I have every intention of going out and about in public without constraint. Unfortunately our MD numbers are back up over 1100 today. Washington county public schools are starting out all online, and they don't have a date to change to in person, just when they feel it is safe. Most of the private schools follow along with the public school closure days. My sister in law is desperate to get her daughter out of the house and contacted all the private schools but she couldn't find one that promised to have the kids in the classrooms. Unfortunately it seems like the majority of people in my area are starting to relax about everything. The local softball leagues have started up with no masks or distancing - there was a packed audience in the park near my house. The local Walmart employees are back to wearing their masks around their chins, and people in church are singing all the responses. In the mean time I am still hunkered down and just watching the Facebook live stream. The archdiocese of Baltimore is reopening their schools with in person attendance. The one high school, where I know of their plans, is opting for a hybrid. Half of the students attend on campus Monday and Tuesday and the other half attend on Thursday and Friday. No one attends on campus Wednesday. They seem to be loudly proclaiming that they are going in person. I'm not sure if that decision will change or if they could be forced to change if MD's numbers don't start going back down. It feels like a money grab to collect tuition from parents who want their children to go back to school or need them to for childcare reasons.

Yes, we are.
I thought it was too soon for softball and baseball, but they went ahead.
I'm guessing the way the state tournament is being handled is what was happening at all the games.
Around 30 teams around the state had their seasons interrupted or ended because of covid.
Some people will never learn.

Well, if MLB is any indication, sports leagues will not be around too long. 11/33 Miami Marlins personnel test positive for COVID. Only problem is they were in Philadelphia, so the other team, in a place where the outbreak was less severe, were now exposed, leading to the game in NYC with the Yankees being postponed. Baseball now needs to figure out its next step. But this is going to work well/s

Sports need to call it a year and be done. And how embarrassing for my Phillies to be owned by a COVID-depleted team. I read in the Inquirer earlier that the Marlins decided via group text to go ahead with yesterday's game, knowing there was a team outbreak. So I have even less than the zero hope I had that baseball could actually come back responsibly.

Well, this will be interesting. From the Buffalo News, paywalled, of course. I read this to my DH, who said his administration planned to let students remove masks once seated at desks. Better let them read this, Hon! He also said the expectation is that even when he's teaching in person, he has to teach to a Chromebook, too, for any students who might be required to quarantine to access online. He's currently doing all online from his classroom now. His last class today were all AWOL.

Our numbers don't look great and a few local districts that came out with 100% in-person school plans last month are now postponing the start and/or starting remote. I am really hoping our schools start remote, at least, and then see how it goes.

In Georgia they are just suggesting masks for the kids at school, but requiring it of the staff. So I am sure none of the kids will wear one. I haven't heard of classes being made smaller to accommodate social distancing unless they have enough kids opting for distance learning. My county starts up August 3rd, and I am reading that in this last week more people opted out of in person so now it is 23% of kids that will not return. A few weeks ago that number was only 10-15%.
I really feel for the teachers here.

While I would really, really, really like to embrace the "it's getting better" scenario embraced by our governor and some other politicians, I feel more comfortable with the caution of our mayor and county judge. Perhaps, as many say, that's my political affiliation showing, but I just can't find any meaningful data on the "go out there and party" side to make me take the chance.

Our district is doing separate online, so if you go the online route you're not in class with your homeschool, but it means the teachers can focus, teaching just online or in person. If everyone gets sent home that will change but it still makes so much more sense then asking every teacher to do everything.

I saw in GA some parents and children were protesting because they want to go back to school!
Lord! If not for the innocent people they will take with them if they get sick; I would be off the mind that state: let stupid do as stupid does.

I call all the people from about 30 minutes south of Atlanta all the way down to Orlando methnecks. You know, a combination of the Florida Meth Head and Georgia Red Neck. There isn't much capacity to do better in some of these parts.

Interesting www.ketv.com/article/umbc-chemist-research-drug-help-fight-coronavirus/33443691Inside the science lab on the UMBC campus, several students are working on antiviral drugs that stop the growth of the coronavirus and reduce the threat of resistant strains. It's work that Dr. Katherine Seley-Radtke uncovered in 2014.Now I know this is just now being tested in animals and hasn't even come close to people yet. I just wanted to point out that she discovered this in 2014. Since corona viruses were not a "hot" disease she did not get a grant from NIH. .. until now. So next time someone wants to whine and snort about how come so and so is getting paid to "play with mice" or "mess around with fruit flies". ..well here is your answer. You never know what will become the next pandemic.

I do believe it is getting better, but it could have been better WEEKS ago! Abbott mandated masks a few days before July 4th. Seriously, this should have been done immediately upon reopening things back in May. Personally, I was never against limited reopening of things like hairdressers and retail; however, if it was going to be done then a mask mandate should have been issued statewide. Waiting 2 months later to do it was dumb as shit.
I think I have mentioned before that my organization is very active in the Texas legislature and therefore, I get invited to just about everything and receive all updates from the Governor's office. During the last virtual meeting the Republican legislators were ripping Abbott a new one because he mandated masks. It was awful...his own party was throwing him to the wolves because he actually did something to keep the virus from spreading. It made me freaking sick!
My feeling is that it will continue to get better over the next few weeks, but then school will start back...not sure what where that will lead...

Re-opening school can't possibly make it better.
Think about it - there is no possible way that infections decrease when we put more people together.

The YMCA has been open in my city almost all summer. They have been using one of the school buildings and putting 10 to a classroom. They haven't had any issues but we are talking about kids 12 and under. It is the middle and high school age kids that are going be doing the spreading.

Getting better in Texas at this point means that cases will plateau, then only slowly decline, with hospitalizations and deaths slowly following behind that. But you will likely have 100+ deaths for a few weeks. And this is assuming that people will be following the advice on how to limit infections. I am not sold on the last point. So I do not believe we are out of the woods yet.
