A former colleague posted this about her daughter who is probably about 10 or 11. I posted that this was too much food for even a growing girl and suggested she add some protein to her breakfast but deleted it. She didn't ask for my advice. The child IS thin. Her mother isn't. Is this normal? I am just curious. Like I said, she didn't ask for my advice.

Could be she's close to puberty. I could eat 6 pancakes at one meal when I was that age. If mom is worried, she should ask the child's pediatrician. If it's not puberty, I'd get her thyroid checked, since she's skinny, if that were my own child.

My daughter is so conscientious about limiting her oldest daughter's intake. She is about the same age. Her daughter can have a normal meal. She asks and can have seconds of some stuff (veggies and meat but not bread or starches). When she has sweets, it is one per. My daughter is great at it, too, saying, "Yes, I feel the same way. I could eat the whole pan of brownies, too!" The younger girls (she has 4 in all) take their cue from that. I just can't imagine sanctioning your child eating this much food for breakfast. Again, it is not my business. This is solely curiosity on a message board.

I use to be able to pack away food to an extent that surprised people because I was so slim, even as an adult.
I think if my child was eating that much food, I’d try to make sure it was at least nutritious food, if I had the means and time. But in my experience, when I switched to eating food that was better for me, I ate even more and food was constantly on my mind. That was as a good and grown adult, so I can see it being even worse for a child. So maybe, never mind lol.
That does sound like a lot, and I’d probably talk to my child’s doctor and see what they thought. Beyond that, idk because I use to eat a lot myself. Actually still can, except I’m not so slim anymore.

I was a scrawny bit when I was a kid and out ate my dad and brothers fairly often.

Mine has been eating me out of house and home. Not sure if it's that much but it's still impressive.
Kids tend to grow out before they grow up. The top of Gwen's head now reaches my collar bone. It's quite possible she may be a few inches taller than me.
I've noticed the mass consumption of food is followed by being able to see several inches of ankle that weren't visible before.
She can always consult her pediatrician if there are concerns.
I sometimes get on the healthy diet lecture and then I remember what I used to eat at her age and lose the moral high ground.

When my boys are going through a growth spurt, they can eat like this. And they are both thin. My 4 year old put away 3 pancakes yesterday. And 3 helpings of spaghetti tonight. He also tends to be a grazer. He’s more likely to eat one big meal and graze all day, than eating 3 regular meals. His doctor said it’s totally normal at this age. My 9 year old is just a bottomless pit most days. 😂. But his pants won’t even stay up because he has no gut or butt.

We still laugh about kiddos 2 1/2 hour snack that was shortly followed by a spaghetti dinner where he ate the biggest portion of a pound of spaghetti. The next day he was diagnosed with type 1 so in our case he was starving despite eating everything in sight and it definitely wasn't healthy. It took years to put back on the weight he had lost. At the time we thought it was a growth spurt.
