Today is the second night in a row we went down to 29° F.
All the annuals are down for the season.
The mums and purple hearts will need much colder to be affected.
Amur Honey Suckle is good till almost Christmas.
We have a couple Chinese Privet here and there stay stay green and vibrant all winter.

Frost is light enough most of the annuals are hanging on. Hope they hang on a little longer. The skinny pig will eat fresh marigold flowers but not dried.

Since we live on the coast, we don't drop below freezing too often. We're still at the leaves falling stage. Many of my fall flowering plants are still flowering or on a second round of flowering. I accidentally damaged an indoor plant though. It ended up with ants in it, so we put it out on the back porch. It has protested by falling apart. We'll see if it survives.

We have one bigger pot outside for the marigolds.
I use the little hand claw to rake the dried flower heads into the dirt last Friday.
They usually come back from the seeds in the spring.
The leaves from the red bud trees are just snowing down today
They lost like 50% just today, after the freeze.
Yellow bellied sap suckers are all over the elms as usual as they pass through on their migration south.

Huh! I have marigolds for the first time this year. I'll have to go see if they're seeding.

We have a couple of cocks combs that did just fantastic this year, I'll try and post a picture tomorrow.
So far the upper 20's hasn't hurt them.

Huh! I have marigolds for the first time this year. I'll have to go see if they're seeding. Marigolds are easy to grow from seeds. I've been doing it for years. I really like them and they usually grow really well for me. They are low-maintenance, look good all summer, great fall color, and can handle a few frosts.

This rose has been opening the last two days. Might be the last one, going down to 26° tomorrow night.

My rose has been blooming, too. It's weird in November. We're due a killing frost tonight, so we'll see if it makes it.

Ours always bloom spring and fall.
I think it's too hot in the summer in Arkansas for this one.
It drops it's leaves and goes dormant July/August.
Then comes back and blooms from September to that first hard freeze.
It's been in that spot for about ten years.

The camellias are already blooming. Used to be they waited for January or February but the last few years it’s been late fall.
They’re such big pushy shrubs, at least 20 feet tall now and always trying to push their way through the screen porch screens, yet they have such delicate pink flowers. A nice cheerful oasis in the otherwise dull fall yard.
Although for once we timed planting grass seed right and we have a nice fresh light green sea of brand new fescue so that’s nice too.
Helps you over look the unruly weeds taking over the flowerbeds. More weeding has to be done, and I guess I’m the one to do it.

The flowers had to be about 12" I had my DW hold her hand by them for a reference. Seriously that’s not photo shopped? I’ve planted those a few times and they were more like a ground cover, staying only six to eight inches tall. Either I’m a shitty gardener or that was a different variety. Mine had round leaves that looked like succulent leaves so I’m going with the different varieties option - please don’t correct me and make me feel bad about myself. Do you start yours from seed or nursery plants?

Do you start yours from seed or nursery plants? Plain old generic cocks comb as far as we know. Didn't even know there were varieties. Most of them are much smaller, 12/24" tall at best. There are always a few that shoot up to about 5/6' and have huge flowers. Those are the ones we save the seeds from every year. I have them drying in dish pans right now. I'll take another picture later and post it. I have to go out to the barn anyway.

Here's a couple of them. Losing color as they are half dry, but shows the size in standard dish pans. I actually don't know how to photo shop something.

I remember a movie I saw when I was a kid around 10 maybe - it was black and white so that tells you how long ago. The guy had a greenhouse with plants that would reach out and attack folks. I've never seen Little house of horrors so maybe a remake? But I was married and we built our first house before I willed myself to go into the greenhouse at a local nursery. But I looked over my shoulder a bit. And a gardening monster was born

Had Steve Martin as a dentist who liked to inflict pain. The plant took up half the shop and ate people. And it was a musical! Fun. Turns out the plant seeds came from outer space - so JMA may want to keep an eye on his combs for little green men.

But my all time kid favorite was Fiend Without A Face (1958)
