empress of self-improvement Shhhh. You've never heard of fake it until you make it? What about style and class? Besides, who else do you know who could/would incorporate skulls into their home decor? ETA: and now I'm gonna go out and inspect the South 40.

South 40 inspected. Went with DD on rounds. Home Depot was on the list. So was Wallyworld. I frittered away perfectly good money on mums and snapdragons and a guara. They have been planted.
Sigh. $22 that I will only see again when admiring the garden. If flowers and money would just appear as easily as money disappears...
ETA: Now I wanna go back to Home Depot's garden department and get more flowers. Not necessary to talk me down because DD is working and has no plans to go out again before Wednesday. Lucky for my bank account.
ETA: So...DD had to take some paperwork to DSIL's doc's office and asked did I wanna ride along. Ok. Then she wanted to stop by a different Wallyworld than the one we usually go to because she's looking for a particular kind of flowerpot. They didn't have one. The store is across the street from a Home Depot. Y'all would be so proud of me! I didn't buy anything. My bank account thanks me.

Wut wo. Remember that I couldn't live without a thatching rake? Um. I tried using it yesterday, but it might just be that it's something that I can't maneuver. Don't know if it's me or if it's the rake. Suspect that it's me. I'm going to try again this morning, and if I can't figure it out, it's going back to Lowe's or Home Depot or wherever the heck I bought it. I gotta go round up the receipt.
I thought I could hatch a plot for my gardening today while I drank my coffee. It's too dark out yet to see the garden so no plot was hatched. There will be the usual weeding.
BTW, if anybody else wants to use blue star or white star creeper as a ground cover, be aware that it does not prevent weeds. It's pretty and fast-growing, and if it gets taller than you'd like, it can be mowed without harming it. I haven't had a problem with it growing too high because it doesn't mind being walked on, and mine gets walked on a lot! If you live in a mild climate, it stays green all year. My only complaint is that it grows everydamnwhere if you don't keep after it, to a point of being invasive.
Bought bulbs for a flower I'd never heard of...Chionodoxa. They looked interesting and are supposed to bloom early in the spring and outlast the blooms from daffodils. The on-line reviews were good so I'm gonna plant them and see what transpires. There are 10 bulbs in a package, and they were only $3 so I'm gonna splurge and get two more packages if I can remember where the heck I got them! Oh...and they're bright blue. I'm always up for early color.

I didn't do enough to even count! Raked up leaves and pulled some weeds...actually, filled up a big yard/garden bag of leaves and weeds.
It's killing me to not plant the baptisia and larkspur seeds and the chionodoxa bulbs, but it's about a month too early.
Found the receipt for the thatching rake. It came from Lowe's. It's me. It's just too awkward for me to manage so I guess the regular rake is what will get used.

NOT boring, @missrigby. Just a lull in the gardening action. Summer flowers are passing and fall flowers are just on the horizon here. You can buy mums and pansies but it's still too early to put them in the ground. We're in a heat wave again. At least the crepe myrtles are looking good.
Deer are snacking on the hostas in the front of my house again. Stupid deer.

It's still been too hot here in StL so our garden has been allowed to run wild. Hoping we get back into the 80s soon.
Plus, kids' activities have been filling up my weekends, and I'm not getting up early enough on Saturdays to putter about.
I'm ready to buy more bulbs but am holding back until it's time to plant them.

azucena I wish I had your fortitude in regard to buying bulbs, but when I see them all reason flies out the window and $$ flies out of my checking account. I'll wait to plant them, though, because I really want them to grow and bloom in the spring.

Okay, then! Returned the thatching rake. Got a store credit and promptly adjourned to the garden center and came home with two more guara plants, a veronica and a coreopsis. They have already been planted because I know how the weather forecast works. If I hadn't planted them, it would be pouring in the morning; if I planted them, the rain would hold off until after I have coffee on the patio. Should have got two coreopsis and two veronica. Tomorrow is another day.

Most of my nursery trips involve a kid or two in tow who proceed to whine about looking at flowers <again>. I'm planning to find a day/evening when I can be kid free and hit a few nurseries in a row. Plus I kinda like to buy them late and clearance so I can buy MORE!

azucena A couple of times I've hit it just right and got bulbs at half price. Ask me was I excited? Ask me did I save money? Excited, yes. Save, no. I didn't *save* money because I just bought twice as many!

Oh but you totally made your money work harder. Even more bonus points if they bulbs were types that propagate. Is that the right term for multiply so you can split? I love those types the best. And let me tell you how big of a kick I got out of growing my collected seeds this spring. Free plants! Dd9 helped me collect more this season and says I'm overdoing it now and collecting too many. Blasphemy. No such thing. I still have so much mulch bed space to fill.

I'm not gonna play in the dirt today. The promised rain is happening. I'm glad I planted the new flowers yesterday, and there's no danger of overanxious me planting any bulbs or seeds too soon.

I still have a problem buying stuff from catalogs, but had some disappointing purchases from one last spring (most bulbs never even sprouted) so that’s kind of put me off catalogs. I do have to get tomato plants in the spring but I stick to the Home Depot nursery which is much smaller and has less of the tempting exotic plants that never do well in my yard.

happyhoix Nursery like crack Yup! I've learned not to buy things that don't do well for me, no matter how pretty they look in the garden center. Like asters. There's a honeymoon period when they look so cute, then they get fungus and dry up and die on me. And there are the really pretty flowers all in bloom...bunches of them right now at full price, no less...but they're annuals and will die in a few weeks. I bought globe amaranth (gomphrena) seeds from a catalog last year. It's a flower that's almost always a bright fuschia color. These promised multicolors. Multicolors exist, but they're hard to find. Very disappointed because the only other color besides fuschia is white. What? Cost of seeds plus shipping? That's a no-go.

Drat I had never heard of fall crocus either! Have a hard time with spring crocus here. But most cold weather bulbs don’t do well here. I no longer buy since had to keep them in vegetable drawer in fridge for x number of weeks before planting. I just buy super big bouquet of tulips and such. Oh, and I actually see sunshine sorta ..Made quick trip to store for staples like ice cream and Diet Pepsi. I did have my pirogue tied to top of car just in case. Off to google fall crocus now.

Mister still has not put the hostas I bought him in the ground. I’m not buying him any more plants.
It’s almost fall. What do you all plant in the fall for fall or early spring color? Preferably perennials. Once I get the flower beds situated, I don’t want to HAVE to plant new stuff every year.
My stuff on the deck is still hanging in there. Did I tell y’all a couple of my rosemary plants have tiny flowers? The potted May Night Salvia that grew so fast and furious, then died, then came back to life, is still green. No flowers, but I don’t care. I’m just happy it’s alive. The daylilies in the wood planters are still thriving, thank goodness. The potted French lavender, it doesn’t look too happy, but it hasn’t completely given up the ghost. Idk what it needs. KnockOut roses don’t look too happy either. Don’t know what they need. My little lemon tree is growing and looks happy. I think the challenge with it will be getting enough light when I have to bring it inside for the winter. I have grow lights, I guess I’ll have to figure out how to use them. I got them for my little indoor herb garden last year. Everything still died.
I still don’t know what’s going on with the flowers on the front of the house. Maybe Newbie will protect me if I take her up there with me.

@pinkcshmere Your best bet is bulbs for spring blooms. Iris, daffodils, hyacinth, crocus, tulips. I don't have much lucky with tulips because the bunnies like them.
Dianthus, obedient plant, snapdragons, coreopsis are all perennials not from bulbs. I think you're far enough south that you can plant pansies, dianthus, and snapdragons to provide nice winter color. When the weather gets too warm late in the spring, the pansies will get leggy and wilt. Snapdragons will last into the summer (but they're prone to fungus), and the dianthus have bloom periods all year around.
Maybe just Google perennials for your area? Also check to see which flowers need to be deadheaded in order to keep blooming.
You can buy fertilizer especially for knockout roses.
I went along with DD when she took DGD to work because DGD works at TacoMac, and it's right across the parking lot from Lowe's where I had to go to get another obedient plant, a coreopsis and two orange marmalade plants. The orange marmalade isn't a perennial, but was cheap and colorful. They have already been planted in a new-ish bed where I'm trying to stick with yellow, white, orange and rust-colored plants.
We still have 4-6 weeks before the first frost if we're lucky (our average first frost is November 10). Fingers crossed because I really want things still blooming in the garden for a while yet.
You can tell it hasn't been much of a summer here because by now, I'm usually chomping at the bit to get out and prep the garden for winter. This year not so much.

@missrigby, I do plan on using Google to get some ideas and see what’s what. I just wanted to see what the folks here had to say first. I have a lot to think about. Mister is finally ready to dig up the ugly shrubs in the front flowerbeds. So I need some kind of plan for that. So dumb question, once you all get shrubs, plants, flowers, whatever, established in a bed, do you still have to do a lot of weeding to keep them neat? In some beds, we have landscaping fabric and mulch, and still get a lot of weeds. Im not impressed. I don’t like pulling weeds. I’d almost rather keep the ugly shrubs than constantly have to pull weeds in several flower beds. Unless, it would be temporary, just until whatever we plant got established and “crowded” out weeds, I guess. Is such a thing even possible?

I wanna say it’s made by Scott’s? But I’m not sure. It came in large bags from Home Depot, I think? Sounds like there might be something I need to know about mulch? Please share, because I never used landscaping fabric OR mulch at my other house and have no experience to go on. I also never planted anything there, except the roses from my Grandma that my lawn guy promptly mowed down, so there’s that. The “landscaping” was just a zillion boxwoods that were already there.

I’ve been at the beach on vacation. Will see tomorrow if the deer and rabbits ate all of my butterfly garden.
I left Irish spring soap around the most tempting plants and stink bombed the whole thing

No sage advice here since my mulch consist of pine straw/needles. But it is free and abundant! So always piling on when I can. Not much in way of weeding if at all. BUT it is free. You are doing just fine and remember that Mother Nature isn’t perfect so your garden doesn’t have to be perfect. Trial and error is a learning tool! Kick back and enjoy

That is the foulest smelling stuff second only to gain washing crap. Hope you find all is well in garden land.

At least I haven’t killed as many plants as I did by this time last year. But I also didn’t buy as many last year as I did this year, so I’m not sure how that really works out lol. But this time last year, pretty much everything was dead, except for one little rosemary that Mister took over caring for and tried to keep alive. It died too.
