Fall crocus pit up big green leaves in the late spring and then just die. Literally, you see nothing but dead scraggly leaves which disintegrate quickly. In the fall, you suddenly get 4 - 6" tall light pink crocus blooms. About twice the size ofthe normal spring ones. No greens, just flowers. Lovely.

My neighbors were throwing away a big blue garden pot so I took it from their garbage. Bonus was there are two decorated stepping stones inside!
DH wouldn't let me take it without asking first, I said if it's in the garbage it's fair game! They looked at him like we were nuts. They are possibly getting rid of more and said if we're interested I'm welcome to dumpster dive.
I want to start in on the backyard this year. We finally got rid of all the crap we couldn't last year so we have a rather expansive empty space (we're a corner lot). Now that I know I can plant things without them dying I am eager to do the rest of the yard.
Gives me something to look forward to for spring. I definitely want to get another "hot lips" bush. It grew much bigger than I thought it would in the front yard and it should bloom through the entire fall. I'd like to put a few in the backyard they do really well in sunlight and stand up to the humid heat in summer well.
I want to make a bigger herb garden and use my porch planters for something else. Gwen was not super enthusiastic about a vegetable garden, maybe Abby will be. They both liked the idea of giant sunflowers though.

NomoreDramaQ1015 Even if they aren't fans of a veggie garden, would they go for salad kinds of things? Radishes, leaf lettuce and cukes are easy to grow, and tomatoes can be grown either in the ground or in pots. If you do tomatoes, be sure to get some tomato cages because they get big and need the support. How bout pumpkins and cantaloupes?

This reminds me of a t shirt with pictures of different kinds of birds, like from an Audubon guide book, and under each one was the word ‘bird.’

Well. It's a nice day again in spite of the weatherdudes who insisted that we'd have pouring rain. They started telling us early in the week that it would start Wednesday night. It didn't and not likely that it will. So...you'd think I'd get my como se llama in gear and go out to play in the dirt. Nope. I worked hard this morning and am tired. Maybe after resting a while? If not, the garden will still be there tomorrow. Meanwhile, the plants I bought and planted during the week seem to be happy. It's because they know they're loved It's like raising kids. They need TLC and just the right amount of benign neglect

Guess I should have played in the dirt yesterday because the rain that was threatened all week finally started during the night. Dammit. It looks like the dirt I'll play in today will be in the house The rain is predicted to end on Thursday. Of course. The day I go to work again. I'm being punished. I must have sinned in a former life.

We have a flood alert around here tonight.
It’s just making the weeds get bigger.

Put on my leaky boots and took a turn around the South 40. It's much too wet to do anything, dammit.

Lots of rain this week. Currently 55 degrees with a high of 70. Hoping we go back to some middle high temps for just a bit. DH pulled up the tomato jungle. That was the last of our raised garden bed. They were just too tangled and overgrown to pick anything except the outside edge. Found one more watermelon underneath it all which we promptly ate for supper

It's on my to-do list for tomorrow when my biscuit store paycheck hits my account.

Ordered the boots but got the same old same old because buying the Wellingtons would mess up the budget. I might just ask for Wellies for Christmas, though.
Took a turn around the garden, now that the sun's out. It all looks fine (including the blanket-blank weeds).
Maybe I'll go out again after a nap. Or maybe I'll just wait until tomorrow.

Well, tomorrow came and went. Now it's today, and I still can't seem to get moving. One of the things I want to do is stroll on over to the other side of where the garden ends and check to see if the 30% vinegar has continued to work its magic. The new boots were in today's mail. Yippee. I even went so far as to toss the old ones in the trash

Okay, then. Is everybody else "done" gardening for the season?
Today really is gonna be the day that I go out and tackle weeds, deadhead stuff and decide which annuals are done. Really. I'm really gonna do it instead of just talking about or thinking about it. Then I'm gonna hatch a plot, as my daddy used to say, for next year's garden.
There are perennial seeds and bulbs that need to be planted as soon as the weather is cool enough, but otherwise I think that next spring only annuals will get planted. Our growing season is long enough that I can enjoy them from early April until the end of September/mid-October.
ETA: Almost forgot...I'm gonna wear my new boots when I play in the dirt today!

Not done here @missrigby Just starting on son’s fall garden but further south than you. Long growing season! He’s rebuilding boxes and replacing all the dirt so I should be planting next week. May head out to garden centers later to see what available. I do plants in lieu of seed. Better results for this amateur.

NoNamePerson, I usually do bedding plants, too, but couldn't find baptisia and larkspur except for seeds. I've got bulbs for a spring flower called chionodoxa. It's something I'd never heard of before, but they're supposed to bloom around the same time as and outlast the blooms on daffodils. One year I put in bedding plants for flowering cabbage and flowering kale for winter color, but they got outrageously tall and leggy so that was the end of that. Guess I'll stick with pansies in pots close to the house...when they've been planted in the ground or in pots in the garden, the critters eat them. Besides pansies, the only other color comes from snapdragons and dianthus. All three of them cope nicely with frost and bloom all winter.

Okay. I was out early and pulled some weeds. Took time out to go to WM with DD and getting ready to go back out. It's not as cool as promised, already 75, but out I go. Gonna spray the blankety-blank leaf rollers again, hoping for more blooms on the cannas for the next few weeks. Where's ken a.k.a OMK now that he has a new PC? Anybody out there had frost yet?

I'm here. Just got the pc yesterday afternoon. Learning to use windows10 on my new pc. Had to dig up the 12' sunflowers. Couldn't pull out of the ground. Mexican Sunflowers I started from gifted seeds are now in full flower. We cleaned out the 4 tomato plants that went wild in my 5' tall cages. Beautiful weather lately. 70+ daytime, 50 at night.

I've been working on making my life easier. One of the things I'm doing is replacing high-maintenance annuals with perennials and simple annuals like marigolds. I only had to buy 3 pots of mums this year, so much easier for me!
