I'm mourning a Knock-out rose that was doing quite well for 6 or 7 years and now is almost dead from unknown causes. Have to think of something else to plant there. It's a sunny spot in front of some foundation plantings. The great cicada invasion has precipitated an explosion of the population of tiny dinosaurs, aka birds, around here. And to mess with my mind, the cicadas in flight strongly resemble overweight humming birds. This is some summer. I lost a couple of those roses suddenly. It’s like the bottoms just rotted off right at the roots. But I have a couple others doing great. Don’t know what the difference is. One of the grocery stores is selling them for $7.99. I'm wondering if should take out my old weirdly shaped one and buy another at that price?

I watered everything on the deck today. Some things were looking pitiful and my rosemary wasn’t looking pitiful but sticking my finger in the soil said it was dry.
My lavenders on the front need water. I’m so sorry, but I’m not going out there like I normally would. Tomorrow, I might fill up the watering can and go out the front door with it to water them, but that’s all I’m willing to do. I’m not kidding when I say I’m skeert. As much as I like my flowers on the front of the house and want them to thrive, my fear of snakes is stronger than my desire to be a good plant Mom.

It only took those few days of neglect last week after I started working for my flowers to get all overgrown and messy so there's a whole lot to do to make the garden presentable again. Presentable to whom? It's not like there are paying guests strolling through.
Anyway, there are only a few hours that I can work out there...from as soon as it gets light until around 10, when the temp is expected to already be about 85. That'll do it for me because I don't need heat stroke...that would be so inconvenient, yanno?

Checked the veggie garden last evening and Peter Rabbit got under the fence again. Didn’t seem to eat anything, apparently he just wants to flaunt his criminal abilities in my face.
DH is getting some extra poles to reinforce the fence and I’ve got some stakes to try to staple the fence bottom to the ground. Stupid rabbits.
Also DH ran over my newest, strongest hose with the riding lawnmower yesterday. No he was not drinking and the hose was where it always is - but the grass is nearly knee high and he didn’t see it. Like he didn’t see the edge of one of my raised beds when he ran up over it a couple years ago.
I think he is trying to be as crappy at mowing the lawn as possible so I’ll take over doing it. Won’t work, I’m scared of the riding lawn mower.

I thought I could work in the garden until around 10. Nope. At 8:45 I was done done done! It's just too darned hot. But almost two hours' work accomplished a lot. Tomorrow is another day.

Got some weeds pulled. My brother sprayed some grass be gone to kill the majority of it. Added some more mulch around the roots of my plants.
The water bulbs I got should keep everything alive while on vacation. I put them in and didn't water for over a week. Some got droopy but perked back up after I throughly watered them.
So yay. I won't come back to a barren landscape when we return.

I ate some lettuce from my garden tonight. It was good. I only put a row in because I picked up a free pack of seeds at the library exchange. They had a lot of packs. Planted April 29 along with Sunflowers and Zinnias but they didn't germinate until much later. I was surprised because I thought they are cool weather plants.

My lettuce is growing like crazy now, too. I really never had any luck with it in the past. I think my little fence is keeping the bunny out this year.

Yes, I am going to finish up what I started in the garden yesterday. Then I'm gonna water because the best the weather can do is hint that we might have a 10% chance of rain on Friday.
Depending on how the $$ holds out after the eagle sh!ts tomorrow, I may stroll through the garden center to see if there are any flowers that want to come home with me.

It’s irrational fear - it’s really loud, to begin with, and I have a friend whose lawnmower rolled over on her on a slope (she was ok) and our yard has hills to I always feel like it’s about to tip sideways. It’s not.

Well. I did finish up what I started yesterday. Patting myself on the back because it was cleanup, and I hate that. Then I moved some plants that weren't happy where they were, Maybe there was bad blood between them and their neighbors. Who knows? Watered. Along came DD and said she had to go to Home Depot and asked did I want to go along. I had to go to keep her company, right? While she was getting whatever she went there for, I had to visit the garden center. Had to. There were many, many plants waving and showing off saying "Pick me! Pick me!" However, today I only wanted some pink begonias with light green leaves. They came home with me and have already been planted in a bed with white begonias with dark green leaves. Nice contrast. They had giant begonias for a mere $5. I have a big pot that gets giant begonias every summer. I'm gonna get some tomorrow. How about one pink, one red, one white? Maybe some more spiderwort? And some red hot poker plants. There were lots of yellow and orange ones. Throw in a couple more gaura and two Mexican petunias to replace one that died last summer and one that didn't come back this year. I had yesterday and today off so got to play in the dirt. Tomorrow I have to work! Work, I tell you. It's what will finance playing in the dirt

The seeds that were planted directly outside look so much better then my dozens of seedlings started inside. At first I thought maybe I started them too late (early to mid March, cant plant outside until mothers day at the earliest), but seeing them take off so big and fast outside will have me rethinking plans next year.

I've noticed the same thing with mine. Not going to start any indoors next spring; they are all going to be planted directly in the garden.

@missrigby Have you gotten your 1st paycheck yet, so you can spend it all on your garden? If it were me, I'd blow it all at the Home Depot garden center just for the fun of it.
My jalapenos are growing well. I've got probably 5-6 peppers on each plant. Time to start picking.

I am going to piss it away at the garden center in just a little while. Where did you get the idea that I'd be spending it there? Was that just a stab in the dark? Or am I that obvious? (I'm guessing obvious...)

We've been seeing a little bunny hopping around the back yard lately. I walked out on my patio today and he was right outside the door. I almost stepped on him. So I went out to the garden and picked some lettuce and spinach and put it outside the fence so he can reach it. Be interesting to see if it's still there in the morning.

I got hosed. That's what I get buying something off a Facebook ad. My dinosaur came and it's the size of my palm!
I expected a yard sized dinosaur based on the picture. I suppose I can put it in the planter with my Zombie gnome and get a theme going.
This is almost up there with the wish.com TP panic buy last year. Didn't spend as much this time but at least the tiny TP rolls are coming in handy. The dinosaur is mocking me😖
DH thinks it's pretty funny. Lesson learned buy garden accessories in person!

If anyone should come across a skelegnome, please let me know. My guy needs a friend. No female ones though. They all seem to have braids and just look stupid. I got mine through the What On Earth catalog and last I checked they don't carry it anymore. Damn it.

Some of my plant babies are pitiful these days. I’d be pitiful too if I had to endure the heat 24/7 too. Some of them are worse than pitiful though, but I don’t really want to talk about them.
I do want to talk about the joy I feel when I look at my daylilies in the wood planters on the deck. They are happy looking little flowers to me, and these last few days, there’s been at least one bloom in each planter very day. The odd one is fuller and has more foliage than the other, which I kind of expected. I also didn’t really expect it to bloom, but it’s been blessing me with more flowers to enjoy than the other one.
My KnockOut roses don’t have any blooms right now. And something is eating on the leaves. They say you don’t have to cut the old flowers off, but it looks ugly, so I’m going to cut them off anyway.
My bare root roses, well I said I was only going to talk about the good stuff in this post, soooooooo, my rosemary plants are doing well.
My violas are even still trying to give me flowers. I really thought they’d be dead dead by now. But they are still trying, even though it’s clearly a struggle.
That’s all I have. Mister watered the flowers on the front for me a couple days ago. We got the shiny new, super long hose to make it possible easy for me to water them, but that was before I got skeert last week. The daylilies in the mailbox bed are still blooming, I’m not sure how each individual plant is doing though. And I don’t know how the salvia up there is doing. I’m trying to talk myself into being brave enough to walk up there myself. Maybe tomorrow.

However, it washes off easily, so I need to put it on at least a day that it won't rain or rains very little. I need to get a Rose fertilizer. The 4lb bag of Rose Tone was a good size for me. Storage can be a pain, so using things up like this during the growing season just makes life easier. (Took me awhile to find the bottle I use, to make more spray. I believe its an insectoidal soap.) I do take the flowers off whatever my oldest rose is. If I leave them on, too much plant energy is going to turn them into rose hips and eventually seeds within. I cut them off when I have time, and sometimes give them to Moonshadow as rose hips have vitamin C.

I know you don't want to talk about them but did your barefoot roses ever do anything after you received them? Noooooooooo. Nothing. Your not alone. I bought three barefoot blackberry plants/shrubs. Two out of the three croaked within a week of planting. The third one is coming along. Now watch the blackberry plant require a second or more blackberry shrubs for cross-pollination to set fruit.

I think I buy parsley as a plant at the wrong time of year or weather conditions. I think I am going to lose it, not yet planted but indoors, but I hope the chocolate mint will make it. I generally wait until the prices are good, which oddly are only at Whole Foods, not the grocery store.

Do rabbits like peppers or did they take it for spite? I did get one little "lunch box" pepper today before them though.
