Avast ye swabbies would work today. It's raining.
I'm not going out there to do anything in the rain. I'm so sweet and sugar-spun that I'd just melt. Right?

It's raining here also, and I, too, would melt.

Finally my collards are starting to grow, but I will need to plant more Swiss chard seeds because their germination rate was poor. It's still in the low 90's here which is not a great temp for fall veggies. I don't think my lettuce is going to happen this year because of the heat. Oh well

The azaleas finally got cut back, but they're a bit lopsided. I'm done for the day, though, because I worked up a sweat, and it was just too muggy to do anything more. It's not like it has to be done yesterday.
Some of them are in bloom here and there. Huh? Not the Encore azaleas, just the regular ones.
The grass shoots are growing up big and strong! Not ready for mowing yet, of course, but the new stuff is already about 3" high. Not supposed to mow until it's about 4" and then only down to 3", but even then it's going to be too fine to mow. Depends on the weather, probably. It's supposed to be warm and sunny all week.
I look around out there and imagine how much food we could grow, if only DD would let me and anybody besides me would eat it. Maybe I could plant it in veggies and sell them...a farm stand in the subdivision!

Let your friends and neighbors know you are growing specific veggies and if interested they can buy from you. Maybe 35-40% lower in price than supermarket prices. Determine how many folks would like to buy from you and set up a client list. Keep the number of clients small to start. You would probably have to drop off the produce to their homes so keep it very local.

The new grass is way too long already and should probably get mowed this afternoon. Can't mow in the morning because it's too wet from the dew.
There are still weeds in the front yard. You'd think they'd just go away by themselves, knowing that they aren't welcome.

Got some free seeds at the library yesterday. Not sure if it's too late, first frost date is Nov 1, but I planted lettuce and radish seeds.
Have straw coming from tractor supply to put on grass seed I plan to spread in the next few weeks. Can't believe I couldn't find any locally in this major farming area. It's shipping to the store from Texas. It's "PENNINGTON SEEDING STRAW 35/2.5CF" that covers 500 sq ft. $14. I used to buy a bale for our pet rabbit many years ago at the old location.

I didn't feel like it so I didn't mow. Maybe Friday.

I don't know where the Robin's spend the Summer, but they come back here at this time to eat the red berries on the Holly tree. A flock of them will strip the tree in a few days.

ken a.k.a OMK We had mountain ash trees in our yard in the UP that got berries on them. Apparently they fermented or something between the time the leaves fell and spring, because the birds would eat the berries and stagger around on the snowbanks under the trees. Hey! I finally did it. The back lawn has been mowed. As I suspected, though, the new grass is still a little too fine so even with the newly-sharpened mower blade, it didn't do a real swell job. However...it's mowed now. Yay me. Done for another week.

I'm not sure if Texas still plants them but for a while the state was planting berry trees in their highway medians. When the berries were ripe for eating, the cedar waxwings were flying in and out of the trees and getting hit by cars and trucks. More died when the berries were fermented.

We had Cedar Waxwings at our last house. I knew nothing about them. One Fall they were eating berries on our Holley bushes and falling over onto the ground motionless. I thought they were dead. Later they woke up and began eating again.

The Robins are doing that to my trees here now. Don't have any bushes or any Cedar Waxwings. I don't see drunk Robins. Also have many Nandina bushes loaded with red berries. The Blue Jays like them. Maybe none of the berries have fermented yet?

Maybe none of the berries have fermented yet? I have read nandinas and their berries (which I have plenty of in my backyard) are a last resort for hungry berry-eating birds. Regarding hollies. I have Christmas dinner with a friend's extended family. One year the mother and host asked her son to go snip off some holly bushes several twigs with leaves and berries and place them on the dinning table for decorations. The son did as ordered. During dinner, I noticed something the son missed during his clippings: one of the holly twigs on the table had bird shit on several of its leaves. We all had a good laugh and the offending twig was removed.

Radishes and lettuce have germinated a week after sowing seed. I have a piece of chicken wire over them to keep out the rabbits and squirrels. Supposed to be in the high 70's this week with night time about 60*

There's an iris in the garden that either doesn't know it's an iris or doesn't know that it's supposed to bloom in the spring. It's going to bloom any day now and has done this before in the fall. All the irises in the garden are blue except one. This one. It's snowy white.
I think it's a magic iris and blooms in the fall just to remind me that spring will come again.

Do you possibly have a reblooming iris? There are iris which rebloom and they are available for sale.

Could be, but I got all my bulbs years ago from a client who wanted hers dug up and divided. They'd been in her yard for many years. All of them were blue. None of them were reblooming iris. I'm tellin' ya...it's a magic iris.

Just spread pelleted lime on the back yard. Need to rake leaves in the front before spreading some there. Then a Winter fertilizer application.

There are not a lot of trees in my neighborhood and the trees I have are mostly ornamental no taller than 2twenty or so feet. I will rake up the leaves into piles. But instead of bagging them I use my lawnmower to mulch/chop them up. Then I leave them where the are to degrade and fertilize the lawn. Free fertilizer.

Tennesseer When I was still cutting the grass I mulched it and the leaves. Now we have a service that collects the cuttings on their mower. Our town wants leaves to be raked into the gutter for them to vacuum up instead of bagging. At our last house I had a few large compost piles in the woods.

The white iris that firmly believes in "you do you" bloomed during the night. It's positively breathtaking. Tennesseer, sigh. Getting a Flickr account, upload/download/reload/unload/lock and load/ freeload...it's hopeless. It was easy when I was still on FB. Why can't it be easy everywhere?

Any advice from the great gardeners here. I have 2 geraniums in the deck (only place the critters mostly won’t eat flowering plants). I would like to overwinter the geraniums and regrow in spring. Freezes will be coming in a few weeks here. My mother in law used to hang up geraniums with bare roots in the garage over winter. I tried that once w/o success Suggestions?
