I have to plant my overabundance of tulip bulbs that I forgot about. Oops. Also need to transplant a rose twig, calling it a bush is too kind, and split and replant a shit ton of hostas. Cripes they grew humungous. If you have a cooler, plant a few of those tulip bulbs in a pot(s) and place the pot(s) in the cooler. Stick the cooler out on an uninsulated(?) porch or somewhere safe outdoors. Don't plant in clay or ceramic pots as they may break in below freezing temps. Once spring arrives, bring the pot(s) indoors to a sunny window and the tulips will sprout and bloom.

The Mexican petunia that I mentioned the other day? I thought the moles had just dug under it and made it fall over so I packed more soil around it and straightened it back up. Well. I went up there this morning because it was leaning over again. What? Upon closer inspection, I discovered that the blankety-blank moles (or some other critter) had chewed it right off at its roots. Dammit. There was a whole bank of them that I was turning into a sort of hedge with gaura in front and more tall plants planned for next spring. Gramma is NOT a happy camper. I've rested up enough after dinner and going back outside to see if there's something sort of simple and not too taxing to do. ETA: So I did. Went out and finished digging up and potting the phlox at last. Yay me. Then I Preened a big area at the top of the garden that had been cleaned up and weeds dug. There's more to do, of course, but tomorrow's another day. Our neighbor had a bunch of Leyland Cypress shrubs planted along his fence last week. Today they put mulch around them and had sacks and sacks of mulch to spread. I asked if they'd save me the empty sacks because I can use them for yard waste. They did. I have about a dozen so far. Yay me again. Plastic isn't biodegradable, but at least the plastic sacks are being put to good use, right? Something bit me on the neck just when I was finishing up. It felt like a pin prick, and I put AfterBite on it right away. Kept on stinging. Hm. When I came in a few minutes later I looked in the mirror and darned if my neck isn't red from under one ear almost all the way to the other. Slapped some hydrocortisone cream on it. Still stings. Whatever it was, I hope it wasn't carrying the virus. My new grass seed is sprouting all over the place and obviously very happy. I'm gonna throw some more out tomorrow.

@missrigby how long did it take for your grass to germinate? Was it annual rye or fescue? Did you cover it with anything? I over seeded a few spots with 10 yo fescue seed and covered with Scott's lawn soil. Don't expect any to germinate. The squirrels are digging it all up anyway. I have new seed to use but don't want to waste it on the squirrels.

I didn't cover it with anything, just did like Tennesseer suggested and "scared" up the ground, scattered seed, watered, and bingo! I've got grass in the bare spots. The reason I'm saying fescue is that I can still see the rye seed on the ground.

Wow. Grass seed usually takes 7 - 21 days to germinate and needs to be kept moist. I usually plant when the air is cool, ground is warm and we get morning dew. Now seems a good time except for the squirrels.

Now seems a good time except for the squirrels. This is the quickest I remember it ever germinating. It has usually taken about a week and a half when I've reseeded in the past, and the later in the fall when it's cooler, the longer the germination period. It was cool here last week but sunny every day after heavy dew at night. The ground is still very warm; we haven't come close to first frost and probably won't for a few weeks yet. I've been watering it every day.

Last summer, I know wrong time, I had my front lawn limed, aerated and over seeded to kill the moss (wrong ph) and start grass. I had to water twice a day. It worked but my water bill went up $60.

Wow- just regular sprinkling during a dry month can run my water bill up to $150. In the winter it's around $22. I have a Rachio "Smart sprinkler" that will cancel a run if the National Weather service has reported enough rain (past or near future). It also waters each zone depending on what's growing there, the slope and the amount of sun it gets. It may sprinkle a few minutes in one zone, soak a few minutes in another, then return and sprinkle the first zone. It also adjusts for the seasons- shorter run times now. I love it but it's not good for the water bill. More cutting and weeding today- it's so much more tolerable now that it's cooled a bit. I'm finally beginning to feel like it's my garden and it's a lot more under control than it was when I first bought the place 5 years ago. All those native grasses help. I was going to refill the hummingbird feeder this afternoon and found it was SWARMED by honeybees. They're gone now so I took it in, cleaned it and have some more sugar water cooling.

I'm such a paragon of virtue! Lots and lots of stuff got done this morning, including digging up and moving a whole buncha bulbs that were getting so crowded that when they bloomed I couldn't even see them for the foliage from other flowers.
DD said "a farmer's work is never done." What? Farmers grow food. 56 years old and she doesn't know the difference between farming and gardening. Where did I go wrong?
The reseeded part of the lawn is looking really good. More spots got covered yesterday afternoon. Gonna be 78 here today, 80 tomorrow and Thursday before getting "cold" and raining on the weekend so there's probably enough time for it to settle in and get comfy so it can sprout.

Water that newly seeded area a bit each day until you have a rain day. You don't want the newly sprouted grass to dry out.

We had new gates installed, well, because we are spending a ridiculous amount of money on our property right now. We want our backyard to be as private as possible, so we chose to have pergolas with two of them.

bean29 If wishes were horses I'd be right up there, digging and dividing: one for me, one for you, one for me, one for you... I gotta get a wiggle on, breakfast, laundry, gardening clothes, water lawn...I'm tired just thinking about all that needs doing today. I really, really want to finish in the garden so I can get busy on the lawn in the front yard and dig up those nasty whatever-they're-called broad-leaf weeds that keep sprouting.

It's another one of those perfect fall days. Lots got done again, and it might be/it could be/maybe everything in that part of the garden is planted/transplanted/deadheaded or whatever needed to be done. It's all been Preened (thanks ken a.k.a OMK for pointing me at that stuff--it did a fine job all summer in other parts of the garden!). Tomorrow I get to haul six sacks of mulch up there and spread it. Oy. I wish I felt like getting that done today, but after this morning's workout waiting until tomorrow is a better idea. Tennesseer, not to worry! The new grass and the newly-overseeded lawn have been well watered. I will not neglect the little green baby grasses.

I had an old bag of grass seed. About 20# left and 10 yo. Was going to throw it away but instead spread it on part of my yard. No soil treatment or watering. I doubt any will germinate. I have a new bag I will use on some bare areas with proper treatment.

I've got fertilizer for new grass seed that I'm probably going to spread tomorrow. Why does it cost more to fertilize new grass seed than to fertilize regular established grass? It makes me feel the same way as buying something with no salt added or no sugar added and having to pay more. I gotta pay more for something without extra stuff?

Avast ye swabbies! Oh. Never mind. That's piratespeak. We're gardners.
Okay, then, look alive. Where is everybody? The day is half over!
The newly-transplanted bulbs have been mulched. The patio has been cleaned up. The only thing left to do in back is to trim the azaleas.
So what have you accomplished? Yes, I mean you. You sitting there on your dead center.

So I was just on FB and saw that they have started planting the bulbs in the Keukenhof for sring 2021. Time for all of you to follow suit. Oh and before I forget, if you feel you haven't done enough of that yet after tending to your own yard: they can probably use some help as they had another 7 million bulds to go

I don't like planting bulbs and have done enough. The Niederländer can just plant their own. I don't care how many million they have. So there.
Almost all of the weeds out front have been dug up, but I got tired. Dumped them in trash can alongside of the house on my way back in...rounded the corner and what do I see? All those azaleas that I meant to trim this morning. Grrr.
I need to start writing myself a note at night telling me what to do when I get up the next day. Then I need to write one to leave on the bedside table to remind me to read the note with the day's instructions.
Although the rain isn't supposed to start until this afternoon, it isn't likely the garden will see the likes of me again for a few days. Maybe not until Tuesday.
