I deserve a medal, maybe even a parade. The daffodil bulbs are planted. Okay, most of them are planted. There were 140 of them, and it turned out that I didn't need that many. There are maybe about 40 left, and those will get planted here and there in the garden in back. There are still allium bulbs that want to be planted and some allium that need to be moved. I gotta remember to take the B-complex vitamins every day so I don't wear out before doing a day's work! Here you go.

@missrigby, I get in trouble with my husband for my alliums. I split them every year and plant all of the splits. Until I ended up with over 50. He vetoed that. The last two years, I started giving them away. I only keep 30 to 40 bulbs now.

Knee Deep in Water Chloe What's up with that? There's no such thing as too many alliums. Actually, there's no such thing as too many flowers

The last two years, I started giving them away. I only keep 30 to 40 bulbs now. I do the same each early winter with turks cap lilies. As the stems grow tall, bulblets grow at the junction of each leaf and the stem. When the bulblets mature, they drop to the ground and germinate to a fault. So I dig up the excess bulbs and treat them like a backyard vegetable grower treats zucchini: pack some up in a paper bag, sneak up to a neighbor's front door, place the bag on the door stoop and ring the bell then run away.

After mowing the lawn this afternoon, I sat outside in the shade drinking a bottle of fruit punch ZERO (sugar) Gatorade. As I held the bottle up to my lips, a hummingbird flew up into my face to check out the red liquid I was drinking.
(S)he hovered for about ten seconds checking it out and I guess wondering if I would give it a sip. Not knowing if Gatorade was appropriate for a hummingbird, I did not offer so it flew off into my garden sipping from flowers.

I am not much of a gardener. However, i did pick up a couple different colors of mums and some dirt and potted those to put on my porch today. Nice pop of fall colors.

Went to check my tomatoes and found three Luna moth caterpillars have eaten all the leaves of the plants and were working on the tomatoes.
I need to check my plants more.
Still, can’t be mad. I love Luna moths.

Put a new bag of soil in my raised veggie bed and planted some of the collard and chard seeds. Dumped the rest of soil in a big pot and planted some of the multiplying onions. I'll plant the lettuce next weekend.

I never got around to planting anything this spring/summer. And I managed to kill most of the potted herbs I bought. The only survivors were the rosemary (one of which is really thriving and growing) and lavender. Doesn’t really seem to be thriving, but at least it’s not dead. Yet. The peppermint, I’d given up on because it was brown and crispy looking, shot up some new sprouts. Since that happened after I’d moved it to be discarded and left it alone, I’ve continued to ignore it lol.
Anyway, unfortunately for some poor plants yet to be bought, I just read yesterday that fall is a good time for planting certain plants. I need to do some research to see what’s appropriate that I like. I told DBF I want to go to a local nursery soon. Maybe someone there will take pity on me (and whatever plants I might buy) and give me some guidance. If they’re helpful enough, I’m sure I’ll become a repeat customer because in addition to the 2 beds I’ve been wanting to do something with this year, eventually I want to get rid of all the ugly shrubs along the front of the house and do something more interesting in those beds. Oh boy!

I’m wanting to buy a red Japanese maple for front yard. Will need to call nursery and ask about best time to plant. Crabgrass took over a front plant area that has vinca and ferns. Will need to do something about that next spring. We have lots of shade and deer rabbits etc so not much grows- except crabgrass loves it Any ideas on what to do with this? Will digging up and covering with mulch stop most of crab grass? Need to replant vinca? You garden people are so hard working and knowledgeable and I love to see the photos of flowers!

DH just dug out this portion of our front yard yesterday because of the crabgrass.

I am pretty sure it is no different up north than it is in the south about when is the best time to plant trees. Best time is in the fall when the leaves have fallen of the tree (if a deciduous tree) and before the ground freezes. Same with evergreens minus losing its leaves. The newly planted tree won't use up the energy to protect its leaves and will spend all winter focusing on fixing its roots.

I am so ashamed. While DSIL was setting up my new phone, I went out to water. Oops. It's been four or five days since we had rain, and if I hadn't gone out today it's likely the poor flowers wouldn't have made it another day.
We were at Home Depot this morning to get mulch and yard/garden maintenance stuff. I had $20 "left over" from my garden budget and spent it on two enormous chrysanthemums, one yellow and one purple. OMG, they are positively huge and very healthy with lots of buds about a week away from opening. There are two empty oversize pots that are going to become new homes for the mums tomorrow.
I'm plumb worn out from today's activities. Add to that a lacey night. So tomorrow I'll pot the mums and tackle the weeds that are trying to take over because they figure I lost interest and the garden is theirs to pillage, plunder and loot. Nope. That isn't going to happen.
We still have six weeks/two months of bloom time here.

I didn't realize its 88 out. I got the stuff cleared across the front of the house, topped some flower stems off, trimmed a bush, did weedeating, and pulled weeds. always weeds to pull. That mulch disintgrates. I bought something like 25 bags last spring I believe and it all needs it again.
Then I went down beside the fence and pulled all the grass off that fabric and trimmed back more, so that is clear. I know poison ivy but I hope that vine wasn't some kind of poison. I'm out of Ivy Rest so scrubbed my arms good with lava soap. I had gloves on.
I wanted to check the garden, just to hot and to pooped. Only made it out there 2 hours. I also trimmed a few limbs. I need to water my young lilac, forgot last week, it is horribly dry, I need to remember tomorrow or I may lose it.
But I accomplished what I wanted by the house so that's a plus. Tomorrow the garden. Maybe dig potatoes and clear weeds from my strawberries. Pick peppers and tomatoes most likely. The garden is nearing done, leaves are falling here.
Time for a shower and fix my hair. I have no idea what to do for dinner.

The weatherman said that yesterday was going to be 98 degrees here. He lied - it was 105. I have a portable AC that I use ince every couple of yearswhich keeps the living room at 78 (best it can do) which I used. Temps at night were going to come down into the 60s. Another lie. So Finally I dragged a mattress from the twin bed into the living room to sleep. Got overheated and slept maybe 3 hours.
Temps are supposed to come down a whopping3 degrees today...maybe. So the nattress stays where it is and I have taken a three hour nap. Now I feel almost human again. Almost

I don't want snow. I want my seasonal low 80s! At least I don't live in the north bay. Winds will start up tonight (yesterday they promised this wouldn't happen until Wednesday the liars but I digress) and now in this heatwave they will turn off electricity there tonight through Wednesday midnight. If their pants don't stay on fire we may be back to normal by the weekend. But who knows the promised 3 degrees lower temp today turned into one (1) degree

Mums waiting to be potted. Weeds waiting to be pulled. Alliums waiting to be planted. Red Hot Pokers waiting to be relocated to a sunnier spot.
There's too much to get done all in the same day; it'll keep me off the streets for a while.
Find me in the garden.

I’m trying to figure out what a certain perennial is around here, it’s about 18 inches tall with robust foliage and in the late summer it puts out masses of dark purple flowers. I’ve seen it multiple places around town, even in the dry and dusty little plot in the street median near own town hall, so it must be tough. Anyone in the TN/ north GA area know what it is?

I might be done for the day. The mums got potted, maybe 10% of the weeding is done, lots of plants are past prime and got cut back, lots of flowers were deadheaded.
At a rate of 10% per day, by the time I'm done it will be time to start over. Sigh.

So far, I haven’t noticed anything that stood out to me, it’s pretty much all the same, regardless of the style of the house (it’s not a cookie cutter type neighborhood), shrubs along the foundation on the front and lots of trees, not small or ornamental trees, huge trees. Not much color or visual interest. Maybe they all do their best work in the back yard, where I can’t see. The biggest thing I’ve noticed is that crepe myrtles are very popular around here. There was one already at my other house, and we have 2 here. They’re in some of the neighbors’ yards and in the medians in the neighborhood. I don’t have anything against them, but I’m not interested in planting more.

And if your home is single story and you are going to plant trees, stay away from the big trees like oaks. My neighbor has a giant oak tree dead center of her front yard. Makes her house look dollhouse sized.

Tennesseer what is the flower that grows in big dark green clumps with dark purple flowers in August in this area? They seem to be easy to grow. I've seen multiple groups of them around here. Do purple anemone grow well around here? Perennial geraniums? I may have to sneak across our little town square in the dark and steal some of it to take to the nursery. I love the dark green leaves against the dark purple flowers. I trim back my crepe myrtles but not by shearing them back to a stump, I thin out the branches and trim the bottom branches off completely to get them to take a tree shape. I hate when people axe them completely back. Crepe murder is right.

I think there is a single flower per stalk, there are a lot of leaves, and the flower stalks are the same height as the flowers. The leaves are a dark green- I need to look closer as I drive by to see what shape they are, perennials.

What ever you do with your crepe myrtles, don't trim them back like some folks do. It's called 'Crepe Murder'. And if your home is single story and you are going to plant trees, stay away from the big trees like oaks. My neighbor has a giant oak tree dead center of her front yard. Makes her house look dollhouse sized. Too late, DBF has already been hacking at one of them. The other one is in another messy flowerbed. I wouldn’t be sad to see either of them go. But not until I have a plan for those spaces! Our house is single story, but if I plant a tree, it will be a small or ornamental one. We already have a huge, out of control pecan tree. It’s healthy, just needs trimming to get it off the house and lift the canopy which we have scheduled for next month. I won’t get rid of that one, but I definitely don’t want another huge tree. I’ve seen too many trees crush houses and cars in my old neighborhood. Every spring, at least one huge tree came down. They scare me.
