My zucchini plants have little zucchini’s on them - big as your little finger. Those plants are almost identical to the lemon drop squash plants and they’re planted in the same raised bed. Yesterday they were being visited with a lot of bees. That made me wonder, since these are both squash, if they could cross pollinate? Could I get yellow zucchini? Green lemon drop squash?
The me will tell.

Also, lots of little green tomatoes but none starting to ripen. Getting impatient.

Pink - I don't enjoy eating tomatoes either, but even I can enjoy them in a nice BLT Sammie, heavy on the B.
I planted 4 tomatoes myself. A bit late due to wonky weather and work schedule. Meanwhile I have 7 volunteer tomatoes. All in various stages of growth. Let's just say when it's 100+, no one ventures out to pick the ripe ones and our cherry tomato plants dropped a lot last year. We are going to have a shitload of tomatoes. Dd9 will be in heaven leaving goody bags at various neighbors in a couple weeks.

I generally don't eat tomatoes but I got one little plant because I do like making my own enchilada sauce.
Right now anytime I buy produce at the supermarket it rots five minutes after I get it home. Quite a bit is rotten right on the shelf.
For the price they want it pisses me off.
Farmer's Market is also super pricey right now but at least it's fresh and the money stays in state. The farm stand we frequent opens in a couple weeks we will see what they charge.
All that inspired me to at least try growing a few regular vegetables. Even if it doesn't work the plants didn't cost much and I can use the dirt again next year.
I have six tiny green cherry tomatoes and tiny green peppers. The kale is holding up but hasn't grown much.
Wax beans came up and the carrots have sprouted.
Radishes are going bonkers.
No sign of the lettuce yet. I may have a lemon balm sprout or it's a rouge radish it's too small to tell.

One of my lilies was down today. Cracked off at the base. Not sure if it was the wind, deer, or something else. It is on the side with more sun, so it was somewhere between 5'5" and 6 ft tall. The one next to it is still up. I was going to thin the smaller ones around it, but I might wait.
Was thinking of bringing in the blooms, but just remembered how much i hate to clean up the pollen. They are just starting to open at the top base with the top blooms still green and small.

Uhhhhh….. I prefer to let someone that really likes tomatoes try it. But if I can’t give it away, I will see what it tastes like. No, you need to eat it. It will be yummy! Okay, okay. Maybe.

You didn’t mention but FYI for anyone lemon balm is a mint. Mint is very hard to kill once it takes over. I once had to black paper a bed completely and take it out of circulation for a year to kill the lemon balm ... Did you try and dig out the roots first? I have a raised bed with mint and chives and yes, they've taken over. This sounds like a good solution.

We put invasive plants like mint into a pot before planting into the bed to keep it from spreading roots.

There are already enough tomatoes growing that I’m sure I’ll have to give some away. Probably a lot of them if they keep producing more tomatoes. I have around 60 growing right now. Fortunately for me, they are at different stages of growth, so all of them won’t ripen at the same time. If neither plant grows another tomato, 60 is beyond a whole lot of tomatoes to me. I figure you’re probably joking, but I would send you some if you really wanted me too. Not the mutant though. I’m going to taste it myself, since weltschmerz and CCL insist.

Mister took a picture of a chipmunk on the deck this morning. One of my coworkers that grows vegetable ever year told me that he picks his tomatoes before they are fully ripe because at his house, once they turn red, birds start eating them. So I got the mutant tomato off this morning, so it can finish ripening inside.

Two of my potted plants on the back deck got incinerated with the heat, despite daily watering. I moved them into the shade, we’ll see if that can revive them. The other plants were all advertised as ‘heat and drought resistant’ and so far they’re holding up.
It’s supposed to be >100 every day this week, until Friday, and no rain. Normally, we get a few very hot days at a time, then it subsides into the high eighties/mid nineties for a week or two. This is the second week of very high temps and high humidity, almost no rain, and it’s just the end of June.
I hope this doesn’t last all summer.
This is not good.

I just cut off all the lowest branches of my tomato plants. That way, the plant can devote more energy to the fruit. I have about 40 blossoms on 4 plants.

I get rid of the lower branches too. Less chance of blight from soil splashing when I water.

I have lettuce trying to poke through the soil.
Still no sign of the three herbs I planted.
Pretty sure what is growing are three Rouge radish seeds that got washed into the area during that big storm.
The pepper plant has buds and one of my cherry tomatoes is starting to get ripe.

My new tiny rosebushes have tiny roses on them. One does seem to be doing as well as the other, but it has a tiny rose too. I’m happy. They are both red roses, the color of my Grandmother’s favorite roses. Newbie escorted me across the yard yesterday to look at the tiger lilies. They have flower buds on them, I’m excited about seeing the flowers soon. My tomato plants seem to still be doing okay. Three of them still have flowers, no new babies though. So now I’m watching the bigger ones to see when they start changing colors. There’s at least one spider living in my little lemon tree. I see it on the inside of the pot every time I reach behind the tree to turn on the water hose. Stupid bugs!

Newbie escorted me across the back yard again today to check on my tiger lilies. And she posed for more pictures so she could tell you all “hi” again. Man, I really love that dog! She’s not much for protection and guarding, but she makes up for it by being so sweet and obedient.

Well, you don't know that for sure. It's entirely possible that she'll go for the throat if someone tries to hurt you.
My sister had 2 dobermans. Sweetest dogs, ever. One day, a burglar broke into the house. They didn't stop him, but they wouldn't let him leave. When my sister came home, the miscreant was on the couch, crying, with one dog on each side baring their teeth if he tried to get up. She didn't call them off, and that gave her plenty of time to call the police.

When my sister came home, the miscreant was on the couch, crying, with one dog on each side baring their teeth if he tried to get up. She didn't call them off, and that gave her plenty of time to call the police. When I had my Bullmastiff, she was a cream puff. ANYBODY could rub her and she loved it. But everything I read about the breed said to not underestimate them because they are goofy and loving, because they turn into a whole different animal when they feel like their people or home are threatened. She didn’t bark, like Newbie doesn’t bark. But late one night after I’d got off work and my children were spending the weekend with their Grandparents, the Bullmastiff barked while I was in the shower. I came out the shower covered in soap suds, because something had to really be wrong if she barked. I didn’t see anything wrong though, and I still don’t know what she was barking at that night. The only time I ever saw her in action, the time that made me believe what I’d read about the breed, I was tending to my front yard and my neighbor’s drunk friend came over trying to talk to me. Idk if my Bullmastiff sensed that I didn’t want to fool with him or what, but that was the only time she ever growled at anyone, and she literally chased him away from me. She stopped running after him when he got to the street, so she didn’t run out of my yard after him. And once he was gone, she went back to being her lazy self. My big Poodle thought he was me and my children’s personal bodyguard and he was serious about protecting my property. I use to say that the Poodle was like my girlfriend because he was high maintenance as far as his fur and grooming, but he earned it by how protective he was. And if he got crunk, the Bullmastiff was always there to back him up. The years I had those 2 were probably the safest I’ve ever felt in my own home. I knew an intruder would have to get past them to get to me. I’m glad there was never a situation where either of them sacrificed their lives trying to protect me, my children, and/or our home. I don’t want Newbie to ever do that either, sacrifice her life trying to protect me, Mister, or the kids. All I need her to do is alert us that there’s an intruder, and I, Mister, or both of us can handle it from there.

When my sister came home, the miscreant was on the couch, crying, with one dog on each side baring their teeth if he tried to get up. She didn't call them off, and that gave her plenty of time to call the police. And speaking of Dobermans, the house my Mom bought when I was in high school, a neighbor at the end of our cove had Dobermans. They had a friend that trained dogs for police work, and that person helped train our neighbors’ dogs to follow commands in German. The neighbors had a small horse (Doberman) and they kept the runt of the litter when they bred him. Which grew to be another small horse. When you were at their front door, the dogs wouldn’t bark, but if you knew to look at the curtains, they would move, because the dogs were at the front door, just not making any noise. If you were inside, sitting on the sofa, if one of the dogs jumped on the sofa with you, the sofa would move. They were just that big. And if you thought you were leaving, but they disagreed, they would lay across your lap so you couldn’t get up. They were awesome dogs. And huge. Not fat, because the breed is fairly lean, them being so big was because they were “tall”. I wasn’t afraid of them, because I meant no harm to them or their family and I trusted the dogs to know that. And they did.

Good googly moogly it’s HOT. I think July is supposed to be the hottest month of the year, if it gets any hotter, I might just burst into flames.
I watered my tomatoes before I went to work this morning. By the time I got back home, they were looking crunchy and sad and dry, dry, dry, even with the saucers. It is still 100* right now. What the world?! With this heat, I might end up with fried green tomatoes still on the vine.
I’ve always said summer is my favorite season, but this ain’t the same sun we had when I was a child and young adult. We need a refund for this new sun, and the old one back. Because GOOOOD GRIEF!

I pulled my cilantro today and saved the seeds. Then planted culantro for the summer. It tastes very similar to cilantro and doesn't taste like soap for those unfortunate people with bad genes.

Mister decided to cook fried green tomatoes to go with dinner tonight. So I cut the 2 he wanted off my plant. And the mutant is finally ripe.

First veggies of the year! Assumed it would be a tomato. Bushes are loaded with them. But no, two zucchini’s slipped in there. I should have picked one days ago, it’s way too big. About a foot long and fat, starting to turn yellow. It will probably be a little woody. The second one is a normal size and dark green all over.
I should eat them raw but I saw an apple zucchini muffin recipe. Muffins are so bad for you, even adding zucchini to it won’t make it good for you.
Sounds much yummier than raw though.
Tomatoes persist in being plentiful but hard and green…

But so far, nothing, except for the mutant, and I let it finish ripening in the house.
