Got a few little baby squash and lots of baby tomatoes. Been eating sugar snap peas for a couple weeks now. Looks exactly like my squash and tomatoes!

I am officially on steroids. My last two sessions in the garden I weeded out the hosta beds and cleared space around many more hostas. There are some areas where the hostas are so thick there are no weeds. I need more spaces like that. Unfortunately, the beds also contain the occasional baby poison ivy plant. I'm careful and I was thoroughly after weeding, but occasionally I come in contact with one and within 2 days I look like I rolled naked in it. Urgent Care came through with an injection and I have prednisone pills if the injection doesn't work. I think it's starting to work, though- after having a very bad night I was able to take a good hour-long nap this afternoon. Now I'm afraid to go near the hostas so I mowed the lawn instead. And, in happier news, my crocosmia Lucifer is blooming. It doesn't last very long but it's so pretty. Here's a picture from a nursery web site.

I have a confession.
I didn’t taste the mutant. I took it to work today and gave it to one of my coworkers. He went and bought bread and Miracle Whip to make tomato sandwiches. YUCK! After he ate the sandwich, he said “forget the bread” and ate the rest of the tomato like an apple, sprinkling salt and pepper on it. I’d asked him to leave me a small piece to taste, but I guess it got too good and I was taking too long to come get it, he ate it all lol. I didn’t mind.
He said it was delicious, sweet and the perfect texture, and for me to feel free to bring him any mutants I don’t want.
That was even better than me tasting it, because I wouldn’t have eaten the whole thing, AND the way he raved about it made me happy. I was excited that someone thoroughly enjoyed eating something I’d grown myself, a first for me.

I forgot to mention, 2 of my Better Boy tomatoes look like they are in the beginning stage of getting ripe. They are yellow now. The mutant was a different variety and started turning orange at first, so I’m just guessing that the yellow color on these new ones means they are doing something lol.

Yes, the yellow will turn to orange then red.
I told you that tomato would be yummy! When you get another one you need to taste it yourself.

Yes, the yellow will turn to orange then red. I told you that tomato would be yummy! When you get another one you need to taste it yourself. Yes, you did tell me that, and my coworker says you were correct. The problem is that I don’t like tomatoes enough to eat a whole one by itself like he did. Let’s just ignore that he made a tomato sandwich first, which is disgusting to me. So even if I’d tasted it, most of it would’ve still been wasted because I wouldn’t have eaten the whole thing. I guess I need to buy some cucumbers so Mister can make his concoction when some more get ripe, and get stuff to make sandwiches and hamburgers that I’ll eat tomatoes on. And figure out meals with salsa, we made salsa with fresh tomatoes when we were getting HelloFresh, and the salsa was pretty tasty.
I have a few days before the ones that are yellow now, will be ripe, I ASSume. Thank goodness that the ones growing are in different stages so they won’t all be ripe at the same time. 60 tomatoes that I need to do something with at one time would be overwhelming lol.
I offer a HUGE thank you to you and the other posters here that have been so supportive and encouraging while I’m trying to learn!

The heat finally broke and will be down for a few days. I planted out the last of my seedlings today and they were long overdue. Yarrow, flax, salvia, and rhubarb. I hope they make it. They were in the little pots too long and looked pretty puny.

Crap, just saw my first lantern fly nymph. Anyone know a spray that actually works on them?

Crap, just saw my first lantern fly nymph. Anyone know a spray that actually works on them? No idea, but my house in infested with tiny, tiny ants. It happens every summer. Sometimes, I just give them to Dwayne to eat. I'm going to have to find a bug spray, and then Dwayne's mid-day snacks will be eliminated.

My 2 yellow tomatoes are already turning orange, just like CCL said they would. I want to let them ripen all the way on the vine, but I also don’t want critters to get to them. I’ve never seen a chipmunk around here until Mister took pictures of the one that was on the deck a few days ago. So I’m torn between leaving them on the plant or bringing them inside to finish ripening. Those 2 are Better Boys. The mutant and the green ones Mister fried were all Celebrities. Better Boys are supposed to have more flavor than the Celebrities from what I’ve read on the Internet.

they will ripen great on the countertop or windowsill. And they look gorgeous! Thank you! I never imagined I would be so proud of myself for growing something me and my family can eat. I think I started getting hooked when I first grew rosemary and Mister and I were using it to cook with. I think I will leave them for at least one more day before I bring them inside. I am crossing my fingers that nothing gets to them before them. I have at least 7 more of both varieties that are starting to change colors. I really, really wish I’d tried to grow stuff at my other house. I wasn’t afraid to be in the back yard there, like I am here. And that house is much better situated for growing things inside and outside. But hindsight is always 20/20, right?

Your tomatoes look great! I like to let mine fully ripen on the vine, but haven't had a problem with critters.

I found a tiny green tomato by my back door yesterday. Later when the dog went out she was looking all around that area. I don't want to make accusations, but...pretty sure she's the guilty party.

I've been picking peas for some time. The rows were too close together though so I didn't get as many peas as I would have. I have raised beds so that dictated the closeness. Next year it will just be one row down the middle of that section. My broccoli is bolting. DSIL said that the couple of colder nights we had probably made it bolt right away. I'm sad. I had 9 broccoli plants and was hoping to get a lot for the freezer.

I stir-fry vegetables a lot and have multiple jars of hot and spicy pepper mixes, so I like a little heat. I'll chop them and add them instead of the mixes. I found last year that the extra peppers freeze well, so they'll get used up.

I haven’t had a problem yet either, but I know there are lots of critters around here. And Newbie isn’t always much of a deterrent since she lives in the house and not outside. I am kind of amazed at how fast they are changing colors once they start. The tomato on the right in the picture I posted, is completely orange today. And some of the others have started turning orange much faster than I expected. They are very easy to spot now.

Are the stems growing? Does it look like it has flower buds? Yes, it has buds. They just haven’t opened yet, I guess. PC - have you seen the brown bulblets growing on the junction of the stem(s) and leaves? If yes, either collect and scatter them in a new garden bed or let them fall where they may in their current bed. Those are your future bulbs.
