My tomatoes were looking pitiful again this morning. I just watered them yesterday, but my little handy dandy moisture meter said they were almost dry again already. I guess in addition to the heat, all the wind we’ve been having is helping to dry them out even faster?
I haven’t gone on the treasure hunt today, but I did notice while I was watering them that the little peas have grown overnight on one of them and they are clearly visible now.
I also saw that one of the Better Boys has a little pea now. So 3 out of my 4 plants are fruiting now. When I take a closer look in a little while, I’ll be thrilled if it’s actually all 4.

Pink, when it gets above 80-85 I have to water every day. In the 90s, and it's sometimes twice a day. Wind does make it worse, especially for plants with a lot of foliage. They always seem to lose a lot of moisture thru the leaves.

Mister just got home and he asked me when was the last time I watered them when he saw them. I watered them THIS MORNING. It’s 88* right now and the wind has been blowing all day. We actually have a wind advisory today. I understand how a lot of wind can dry out leaves, but I don’t really understand how it dries the soil out. I guess it doesn’t really matter that I understand, as long as I provide water appropriately lol. So I guess I need to get my handy dandy moisture meter back out and check the soil again?

The plants lose water thru the leaves and attempt to replenish thru the roots.
Pots will generally always dry out much faster than in the ground.

I have to water my container plants every day during the late spring and summer. It's dry and kind of windy here, so expected. I suspect grow bags would dry out even faster.
I've got tiny tomatoes and peppers also. Happy dance! I'm still waiting on the okra to come up. Zucchini and squash got started late so they're still small.

Woo hHoodoo! Thanks to your picture I just saw one of my tuberoses has finally broken ground. I was a late starter too.

Yes, the grow bags seem to get dry at about the same rate as my small pots. Yay! on your tiny tomatoes and peppers. I’m doing the happy dance with you!

I had mulch over mine. The mulch over them may be causing the bulbs to not get the warmth the tuberose need to begin growth. I brushed the mulch off the area where they are planted.

They WERE dry again. Sheesh! I’m not sure how I’ll manage their water needs after I go back to work. I don’t see me poking around in the dark trying to see if they need water before I go to work. Maybe I can get Mister to check on them before he leaves for work. He did agree to help me tend to them, so I guess that can become his job lol. I can smell them now, and that smell feels so familiar. I didn’t realize until now that I know what tomato plants smell like. I guess it’s from when my Grandmother use to have a garden.

Don't laugh, but a headband LED is great for gardening the in dark. I didn’t laugh, I promise. I’ve accepted that if I want to grow stuff, I have to learn to deal with bugs. I am getting braver, but very slowly lol. That is the main reason I don’t want to be fooling with plants in the dark. Until I get to really be a big girl, Mister will have to go out with me if it’s dark, or just tend to them himself. I posted a picture of my biggest tomato on FB today and one of my FB friends said I better get some sevindust because tomato worms are no joke. That kind of stressed me out even though I know pests are just as interested in my tomatoes as I am. But trying to reduce the number of pests I have to deal with is one of the biggest reasons I am growing them in containers on the deck instead of in the ground.

Tomato worms are actually 3" long caterpillars. Very distinctive looking and you can pick them off and get rid of them. Oh wait this is @pinkcshmere

Oh wait this is @pinkcshmere Yeah, you clearly forgot who you were talking to when you said something about picking them off. I’m pretty sure you meant to say “… Mister can pick them off and get rid of them.” Otherwise, throw the whole plant away.

I'm not laughing at anyone! But, as an avid gardener in a really "buggy" part of the world, I have a vision of someone with a headlamp picking tomato worms off their plants in the dark. I'm not saying I did that, but I'm not saying I didn't. If I did, it was way better than picking the snails off everything.

They are pretty amazing and their leaves have a special smell too.

And I'm not saying that I did or did not drink too much one night and go out after dark salting slugs when I lived in the south.

I once had slugs real bad on my lilies every morning. Don't use salt because it is bad for the plants. Make a mixture of ammonia and water 50/50 and spray them. Ammonia is NH3. Meaning it is nitrogen which is a fertilizer, and hydrogen which evaporates into the air where it came from.

I actually shot a tomato worm with a BB gun - it wasn't dark but defiantly after 5 o'clock. We lived in area where no chance of hitting someone/something if I missed, but I didn't. I normally put on gardening gloves and picked them off. I had an aversion to chemicals back in the late 60's. Still do!!

My Mom and I lived with her until I was about 8yo. I’ve never liked figs though. Thinking back to living with her stirred up more memories. I think her “outhouse” was the kind of spot where meat was cured after slaughtering hogs and stuff. I’m going to ask my Aunt about this.

CCL told me how to make insecticidal soap and I’ve read about Neem oil. I have the impression that those work for tiny bugs like aphids, do they work for larger pests too? I don’t have a BB gun and something tells me that shooting at bugs with a 9mm is a bad idea even though I’m a pretty good shot. I’m thinking that would likely cause more problems than it fixes. Anyway, I want to tell y’all again how much I enjoy looking for baby tomatoes on my plants every day. I know that all of them have at least 2 babies, but for some reason, I can’t always find them all. So I have to look again a few hours later lol. None of them are on the outer edges of the plants, they are all hidden in the middle of the plants so far. I probably look like a crazy person bent over the plants several times a day, but I don’t care. I apologize for boring you all constantly talking about my plants. It’s just that I am getting so much joy out of trying to grow them, and the treasure hunts while the babies are developing.

The insecticidal soap works on bigger bugs for me, too.
Gave away more hostas. The young lady recipients were surprised I would dig them up just to give them away. They haven't seen the hosta jungle lately.
I was at Costco and they had very similar potted hostas for $14.99 each lol.

The mistreated plant still has a few curled leaves. It’s not hot today, and it rained so much yesterday and last night that I’m sure it’s not dry. EEK! I Googled it and it can be a few things causing it. Idk what to do, so Imma do nothing right now. I didn’t really go on my treasure hunt this morning because everything is wet. I just looked them over real quick and went back inside. I did, however, notice that the other Celebrity has 3 babies, I thought there were only 2. I guess that’s why I like looking at them so often, there’s a chance I might see something I missed the last time lol. And this morning I wasn’t even looking closely and saw something new.

My hell strip has Bermuda grass. I need to get rid of it and plant something really low maintenance and low water usage, but I'm dreading starting this project. The house was built in 1950 and that grass has probably been there since 1951.

The house was built in 1950 and that grass has probably been there since 1951. What exactly is your hell strip? We can really come up with good names for stuff we don’t like, can’t we? I know some people consider Bermuda grass a weed, but that’s what I had at my other house and when I was diligent about keeping weeds out (and paying for it) it was thick, lush and beyootiful! I’m not bragging, but I seriously had the best looking yard on my street. Actually I inherited from the previous owner and I just had to learn how to keep it up, so the neighbors wouldn’t say “that yard use to be so pretty before she moved there” lol. And I kept it up for years, until my money got funny and I stopped having it treated. At that point, I didn’t care what the neighbors thought since nobody was giving me money to help maintain it. Here, part of our front yard is zoysia, I assume it was planted there because of the neighbor’s trees that shade that side of the yard. It’s lush and pretty, the rest of the yards, not so much because we’ve not been able to get rid of all the weeds even when Mister was paying a company for about a year to take care of the weeds. There aren’t many weeds in the zoysia, just everywhere else. Our first summer here, we had someone cutting the grass for us, and we ended up with a million weeds. It’s my unproven theory that mowers that cut a bunch of different yards spread weeds between yards. I doubt most people that cut grass sterilize their blades and equipment after each yard. That’s just what I think though, Idk if it’s really fact. I also keep thinking Mister cuts our grass too low. I seem to remember that cutting it a little higher helps the grass choke out the weeds. Plus, it just looks better to me. I also seem to recall that weed killers work better when the weeds have more “surface area” for the treatment to “stick to”, so it’s better to apply it a couple of days before you intend to mow your lawn. But since I’m not going to cut it myself, I try to resist insisting that Mister cuts the grass “my way”. It’s hard to not insert my 2 cents about what worked when my yard was so pretty though, because he gets so discouraged because he really wants a pretty yard and it’s just not happening. I didn’t mean to go on a tangent about grass lol. I was really just curious about your hell strip.
