I saw this this morning before you posted it, and my head exploded. I don't understand people putting the economy before human life. And an aside is that if we don't quarantine and nip this in now - perhaps already too late for the bud - that a lot more people die, be sick, some disabled, and then we still likely have the same economic meltdown - and maybe worse and harder to recoup. It's not even that. How people aren't realizing that the longer this continues medically the economy will be limping right there with it. If we can get to a point of recovery then so can the economy. It's almost always true - if you're going to hit the bottom it's best to hit the bottom as fast as you fucking can.

Unfortunately, people are selfish and don’t listen to bad news. We get told we don’t know what we are talking about because they get away with foolish behavior. That’s what we are seeing now

I live about 15 miles from the Maulher Wildlife Refuge the armed militia took over a few years ago. In this area, gun rights and bibles rule over anything else. There seems to be a belief this is about illegally enacting Martial Law vs. a freaking public health crisis. It drives me nuts. The government isn't coming for your guns and rights, they are trying to keep you alive - morons. Argh...

You want to be dumb nature is happy to take advantage of that.

I wouldn’t either. Those people heading to the hills are bringing cases back to the hills along with them. Yes! And, we don't have the medical or even retail infrastructure to deal with them - at all. It's kind of nice at this point to see Oregon closing all the public lands. We have a family friend who owns a furniture store in Maine — the store has been in business for 50 years and is popular with the “summer home” crowd. He is drowning in business right now. It seems everyone escaped New York and is waiting it out on the Maine beaches and redecorating their beach houses. It got so crowded at York Beach the other day, the town had to shut the beach down — in March!! In Maine!! The friend’s wife is begging him to shut down the store so that he doesn’t catch the New Yorkers’ cooties. He sees a store full of inventory he needs to unload before the economy fully fails. But, Maine, like everywhere else, is woefully unprepared for the coming medical tsunami.

My sister is an hour and a half outside Seattle in the mountains and said people are flocking there too... she is quite annoyed.

I saw a piece on florida that it is going to be bad. They have the aging population and did not start isolating early enough. In terms of politics - I think it is going to be the effects on the swing states that matter. My sister is chief of surgery at a florida hospital. She's not optimistic. she is also insisting that our parents leave FL ASAP and come back home. Your family seem like high achievers. Do you have a loser?

Parts of the US will be as bad as Italy, but I don't think most will be; I think it will be limited to those densely populated areas like big cities. Just my 2 cents. Curious. Based on what? It seems like densely populated areas are at risk, but rural communities still have human contact.

Do you have a loser? My brother. He is a certified teacher but he currently works as a tax collector. He is the primary parent of his 3 kids, and is an overachiever in that regard. He's a bit more of a free spirit than his two sisters and has done many different jobs. ETA: I don't think he is a loser, he's probably the happiest, and I envy his ability to do whatever the fuck he wants and not feel pressure to succeed.

Just think of all those people commuting together, walking the streets, working together, living close together, etc. It'll spread in smaller communities but NYC is like the worst nightmare when it comes to this. Think of all those infected people riding the subway infecting other people that are going home to their families and infecting them.

Have spent the last 30 years in rural America. I disagree with him now.

Rural America has very limited gathering spots, the post office, the one or maybe two gas stations, the one maybe two restaurants, the one maybe two grocery stores. Places where you know and interact with everyone.

Don't the majority of Americans live in suburbia? Lots of common shared spaces, but also a lot of private space. My car, my house, my backyard - all fairly safe space.

My area has ZERO ventilators or ICU beds - and all 4K residents go daily to the two post offices to get our mail. How that's social distancing I will never understand.
We are also seeing large influxes of people coming into this area trying to escape the virus in their more populated areas. Likely, they will bring the bug into this area with them.

I think I live in the ideal spot right now. Low population density and several big hospitals.

My daughter works in infectious disease. She says after the spring break fiasco, it’s going to be a very bad time.

This city is completely locked locked down now, except for essential services...grocery stores, liquor stores, pot shops and pharmacies.
I like the premier, Legault. He's factual, positive and doesn't spread around hysteria, fake cures or bullshit. "Look, don't keep checking your calendars and stats every day. We're doing our best, but the results will not be seen overnight. We all have to pull together. You may be surprised about the liquor and pot stores, but we know this is a very stressful time for everyone. It may help."

A 25 bed hospital here. we have one case in the county so far, just staying home. And a bunch of snowbirds will be back, that won't be good.

My state had it's first death yesterday. Someone who lives in my county. I had seen on FB that one of the cases here was on a ventilator.
We also have the idiot who continued living his life while waiting test results and was positive.
Stupid governor still won't go to shelter in place. She takes her orders from Trump.
