In Europe, only about 20% of the students get the free college. The rest go to trade school. And they don’t piss away four years in high school pretending to learn Shakespeare. They start the trade classes in high school, And graduate with skills that employers actually want.
Shutting down the trade programs and pushing kids who aren’t that bright and don’t come from wealthy families to go to college has been a Flippin disaster. IAll that was accomplished with that is that companies can now require a college degree for the same low level clerical work that my grandfather did with an eighth-grade education. That’s not progress.
But I agree with DJ. Our priorities do suck. A bright promising kid should not have to get into six-figure debt in order to get an education. And colleges should stop being so predatory. They don’t give a rats ass what happens to the students after graduation. That’s why they keep admitting stupid kids and pushing them into worthless degree programs that are cheap to run.

That’s why they keep admitting stupid kids and pushing them into worthless degree programs that are cheap to run. One of my best friends just retired from a 25 year career as a wood ?shop teacher at one of Seattle’s most racially diverse high schools. He became a teacher due to “divorce forces real job”, a good reason to retire as a self-employed contractor after ~20 years. (His ex had abandoned the boys and then had issues with her post divorce custody. But I digress if only to give a brief look at a successful American male without a college degree. Becomes a teacher of inner city kids, owns 5 rental units F&C, beautiful house, boys doing well, lovely and very funny second wife. Degree!?!? Seattle school system ‘gave’ him a master’s degree pay scale! Then over his teaching career he becomes a voice for NOT going for a degree, NOT getting into huge levels of debt. Great interview in The Stranger Outlining all of this. Has poverty level inner city kids and is pushing the idea of acquiring salable skills post HS and to learn how to learn so skills could be expanded. IOW how to get a job with no money behind you, one viable parent, you know the drill. One summer he harnessed three of these kids and we painted My 13U wood frame building. We taught them all aspects from ground tarps to trim and paid them more than MW. He has had projects like this every year and many have been funded by city money for park improvement stuff, ‘small’ shelters for the homeless, fences and decks. He is just constantly advocating for educating towards no college and showing a path including the example of the one he traveled starting out working for a builder two weeks after his HS graduation. He just shakes his head that his version of how to prepare kids has been slowly budget cut into near oblivion. He fought a valiant and successful fight to insure his classroom torch was passed. Wishes they would bring back more of these types of programs. Where are these kids going otherwise?
