What will be a ball park figure to fix a clutch on a car? How long do they last?
I have a small sedan and this is my first standard transmission car. My car is 5 years old and I'm the first owner.
How do I know when it needs to be replaced? Is it obvious (i.e. shifting from one gear to the next change will not be smooth, etc.)?

I have 170k miles on a 10 year old standard honda civic. I abuse that car and I still have the original clutch, and I think it is still good. I think it starts to slip if it is getting worn out. Then one day you will not be ale to shift out of 2nd gear.

Have no idea on costs, I never replaced a clutch.
Wish my Dad had replaced the clutch on one of his cars. The shifts were soggy and slow but it still had the original clutch at 300K miles.

The best thing you can do to maximize the life of your clutch? Do not drive with you foot resting lightly on the clutch pedal. Wisdom from dear old Dad: put your dang foot on the floor when it is not actually using the clutch.
When is it time to replace the clutch? If you step on the gas pedal and the car is very sluggish on the acceleration vs. normal driving under similar conditions, it's probably time to have the clutch looked at.
