Interesting article from the Washington Post: ‘You’re a bunch of dopes and babies’: Inside Trump’s stunning tirade against generalsThis article is adapted from “A Very Stable Genius: Donald J. Trump’s Testing of America,” which will be published on Jan. 21 by Penguin Press. There is no more sacred room for military officers than 2E924 of the Pentagon, a windowless and secure vault where the Joint Chiefs of Staff meet regularly to wrestle with classified matters. Its more common name is “the Tank.” The Tank resembles a small corporate boardroom, with a gleaming golden oak table, leather swivel armchairs and other mid-century stylings. Inside its walls, flag officers observe a reverence and decorum for the wrenching decisions that have been made there. Hanging prominently on one of the walls is The Peacemakers, a painting that depicts an 1865 Civil War strategy session with President Abraham Lincoln and his three service chiefs — Lieutenant General Ulysses S. Grant, Major General William Tecumseh Sherman, and Rear Admiral David Dixon Porter. One hundred fifty-two years after Lincoln hatched plans to preserve the Union, President Trump’s advisers staged an intervention inside the Tank to try to preserve the world order. By that point, six months into his administration, Secretary of Defense Jim Mattis, Director of the National Economic Council Gary Cohn, and Secretary of State Rex Tillerson had grown alarmed by gaping holes in Trump’s knowledge of history, especially the key alliances forged following World War II. Trump had dismissed allies as worthless, cozied up to authoritarian regimes in Russia and elsewhere, and advocated withdrawing troops from strategic outposts and active theaters alike. Fabulous motivational speech.
Right up there with "You'll be living in a van down by the river."

Interesting article! I always pegged Tillerson as an “yes” man to Trump’s ignorance on matters of national defense but I guess that was wrong! I have newfound respect for him now! Mattis, impressive as always even when he knows that the boss man is wrong. The soldier can’t be taken out of him. I was always upset when I’d see some of the decisions Trump made in regards to troops, alliances etc. Always kinda wondered “why doesn’t somebody explain things to this moron!” It appears things HAVE been explained, moreover dumbed down so anyone can understand. Anyone except Trump!

Very interesting read Tenn.
The name calling and embarrassing the military in that room was ridiculous, they aren’t the ones that decided the ridiculous policies that put them in unwinnable situations.
I also don’t agree with profiting off military missions.
I do however agree other NATO countries need to provide their fair share of 2%, I know Trump didn’t quite understand how that worked. I also agree with getting soldiers out of the Middle East, though his policies now are just repositioning them. It also disturbed me that almost everyone in that room seemed to be for the US policing the world in perpetuity, at the peril of our national balance sheet.

When is the USA going to provide it's fair share of taking in refugees from the war-torn Middle East? Refugees cost money, lots of it. Other NATO countries have taken in millions, but the USA...not so much.

Historically, the United States has led the way on global refugee resettlement, taking in tens of thousands every year. But in January 2017, President Donald Trump slashed the refugee resettlement quota by more than half, and issued an executive order banning entry to nationals of half-a-dozen countries, including some of the world’s largest producers of refugees, from entering the US. Since then, the flow of refugees to the US has slowed to a trickle, and 2018 is on pace to be the worst year for resettlement to the US in decades. Here’s how this year’s resettlement numbers to date (January to March) in 13 refugee crises stack up against the past, according to State Department data. www.globalcitizen.org/en/content/us-accepted-refugees-2018/Canada has taken in far, far more than you have, and we're ten times smaller than you are. It's costing us a great deal, but Trump wants more money. He yammers on and on about "burden sharing" in NATO. When are you going to accept your share of the burden?

Welts, you realize I’m for getting the US completely out of ME affairs? That would include any kind of stationing of troops, bombing, meddling etc. The refugee issue is completely tied to that issue.

Source? I’m seriously curious. Also I never said the US shouldn’t contribute to the refugee crisis it helped create, you are completely making that up implying that is my belief.

I didn't claim that you said it. Trump doesn't want to take them in. However, he keeps whining about other countries not doing their fair share.

Wow. Such an ignorant dick.
And Pence! Sitting there like a wax dummy, waiting from Trump to stop ranting. Gutless, spineless, and certainly not a Christian, no matter how much he pretends he is.
So demeaning to the military - having to sit through that bullshit from a draft dodging rich boy who whined his way out of military service with fake bone spurs. Sickening.

I’m for a strategic withdrawal from the ME, assisting with the refugee crisis, then getting the hell out and agreeing with NATO countries on what to spend GDP wise, I’d actually make it 1.5% for everyone.

‘You’re a bunch of dopes and babies’ How eloquent! I can picture Roosevelt or Churchill saying that. You liked that one? I found this statement deliciously ironic from Mr. Six-Time-Loser himself:
“We are owed money you haven’t been collecting!” Trump told them. “You would totally go bankrupt if you had to run your own business.”
Maybe I don't give him enough credit in the one area of business he is actually an expert in.

Oh, the irony! Trump says he won't pay $500K for MN rally. He still owes DC $9M. The president, who called himself "the king of debt," has threatened to sue the Target Center over a bill for security. He's never paid any of his DC expenses. www.wusa9.com/article/news/local/dc/president-trump-wont-pay-for-minneapolis-rally-still-owes-dc-9million/65-012b6e66-8942-44fb-b4a1-6229b69afe18Not paying expenses. Not paying contractors. Not paying workers. He even refused to pay the guy who installed the pianos in his properties.

Trump's plan was to seize the oil and charge other nations 'for everything.'
Still trying to run the country like his shitty, serially bankrupt company, overcharging for everything while grabbing what it doesn't own.

Complete article here: ‘You’re a bunch of dopes and babies’: Inside Trump’s stunning tirade against generalsStrong, strong article..I was getting worked up like I am sure the military folks in the room where.. Shows how inadequate the man is for the office he holds...and those who are supporting him...yes the ones here who are so cocky in their posts against those of us who post against the man...to continue to support this individual and want another four years of him...possible because they feel they will make a few more bucks because of him being in office...no matter how much he hurts the country..so hard for me to understand. As u can see by his reported statements, in his mind, everything is about dollars and cents and profiting by our military ndeavers...Kind of like Switzerland selling their military as the mercenaries of Europe....Just vnot what we do..and yes he would look down at the professional soldiers who were quite qualified to earn big $ in the private section but opt out for public service...in their cases the different branches of our military.. That they were able to hold it in and not literally slap him down..at least pelt him with their shoes, SS personal present or not...I tip my hat to them.

That is an interesting chart - but as 2% of GDP, with US GDP being by far the largest, it would seem that if everyone else is at 2% of GDP, it isn't going to impact our obligation a whole hell of a lot.

So at the end is still about balance sheets? We have had this notion in our heads thta we are “defenders of freedom” and somewhat spreaders of it. I wonder how people, nations had survived before we showed up on their door step announcing “we are here! You’re gonna get some freedom now but first we’ll destroy you to pieces and put you back together the way WE like!”

I read the story in the NYT. Appalling and alarming. Way to treat men who are so much more educated and accomplished. And have devoted their careers to serving.
